Chapter 13 - THE AMBUSH ON ROUTE 7

Elena pushed the accelerator of her sedan down, weaving through the mid-morning traffic on Route 7. The wipers slapped frantically against the glass, barely clearing the torrential downpour. In the passenger seat lay a battered thumb drive Marcus had pressed into her hand seconds before the archive doors had sealed.

Her hands on the steering wheel were steady, but her pulse hammered in her throat. She had called Sophie four times. Every call had gone directly to voicemail.

*“Hi, Mom! I’m in the federal court library researching precedents for Judge Hall. Phones are on silent—text me if it’s an emergency!”*

Elena had sent three texts: *LEAVE THE BUILDING NOW. DO NOT TALK TO ANYONE IN A SUIT. GO TO THE SUBWAY.* No reply had arrived.

A flash of chrome in her rearview mirror caught her attention. A heavy, dark-tinted Suburban had closed the distance between them, matching her speed. Two seconds later, a second SUV pulled alongside her blind spot.

Elena didn't panic; panic was a luxury for people who didn't understand logistics. She downshifted, assessing the road ahead. The highway was approaching an exit for an industrial quarry—gravel roads, blind turns, zero civilian traffic.

The Suburban on her left surged forward, its reinforced bull-bar slamming violently into her front quarter-panel. Metal screeched on metal. The sedan fishtailed, tires shrieking on the wet asphalt before catching traction.

Elena braced herself, cutting the wheel hard to the right. She braked abruptly, allowing the attacking SUV’s momentum to carry it forward, then slammed her foot on the gas, cutting across three lanes of traffic and diving down the off-ramp toward the quarry.

The second SUV pursued relentlessly. Elena grabbed her phone, hitting speed-dial for Daniel.

The line clicked. "Daniel! I have two unmarked units on my tail off the Leesburg turnoff. They’re running tactical maneuvers—this isn't an arrest, it's an abduction!"

"Elena, get to the weigh station!" Daniel’s voice roared through the speaker, accompanied by the howl of his truck’s engine in the background. "I’m three minutes out. Margaret didn't lie. The syndicate is operational, and they’ve compromised the regional marshals!"

Elena glanced in the mirror. The trailing SUV was accelerating directly toward her rear bumper. "Daniel, Sophie isn't answering. They’ve already closed the net around the courthouse!"

Before Daniel could reply, the trailing vehicle struck her rear axle. The sedan spun uncontrollably across the rain-slicked gravel, flipping onto its side and crashing through the chain-link perimeter of an abandoned cement plant.

Glass shattered like diamonds in the gloom. The world inverted, slamming Elena against the deployed side-curtain airbag. Dust and the acrid smell of burnt propellant filled the cabin.

Through the spiderwebbed windshield, upside down, Elena watched the passenger door of the black SUV open. A man stepped out into the rain. He wore a crisp charcoal overcoat, polished Oxford shoes, and carried a silenced Beretta.

Elena recognized the face beneath the dripping umbrella.
