Chapter 13 - The Vault of Sins

The air in the private vault beneath the Manhattan headquarters of Vance Enterprises was cold enough to preserve meat. Fifty feet below street level, encased in six feet of blast-resistant tungsten carbide, Emily and Victoria stood before their late father’s private safe.
"Arthur Vance didn't die of a heart attack, Emily," Victoria said, her voice barely louder than the hum of the dehumidifiers. She slipped a titanium keycard into the digital lock while Emily entered the seventeen-digit biometric override code. "Julian didn't just target us because he wanted Vance Enterprises. He targeted us because Dad held something that could have destroyed Julian's entire bloodline."
The vault door swung open with a heavy, pressurized hiss.
Inside lay not gold bullion or bearer bonds, but rows of black leather-bound ledgers dating back to the late 1980s. When Julian had pushed Emily from that balcony, everyone believed it was the desperate act of a narcissistic fortune hunter trying to secure his wife's fortune before his fraud was discovered. But during Julian’s trial, high-level federal warrants had secretly sealed an entire sub-corporation known as *Aegis Global*.
Emily reached for the top file, stamped with their father’s personal seal. As she opened it, dozens of grainy surveillance photographs spilled onto the stainless-steel table.
"Look at this," Emily breathed, her eyes widening.
The photographs showed Julian Sterling—not as the polished twenty-eight-year-old tech investor he pretended to be when he wooed Emily, but as an eighteen-year-old cadet in a private paramilitary academy in Switzerland. Standing beside him in every photograph was a distinguished, silver-haired man with cold, aristocratic eyes: Senator Sterling, Julian’s supposed uncle, who had died in a private plane crash five years ago.
Except, behind them in the photos, stood Arthur Vance.
"Dad funded them," Victoria whispered, her hand flying to her mouth in revulsion. "Dad didn't just know Julian’s family... he built their private offshore empire. Look at these wire transfers. Hundreds of millions of dollars funneled through shell corporations in Panama and Zurich."
"Arthur Vance wasn't an innocent victim," a smooth, cultured voice purred from the darkness of the vault corridor.
Both sisters whipped around, hearts hammering against their ribs. Victoria instinctively drew the compact Glock 19 concealed in her blazer, aiming it directly at the corridor entrance.
Stepping into the sterile white halogen light of the vault was not Julian, but Elena—the brilliant, soft-spoken young woman Emily had rescued from Julian’s clutches, educated, and appointed Chief Administrator of the Arthur Vance Memorial Foundation.
Elena was no longer wearing her modest corporate business suit. She wore tailored black tactical gear, her long hair pulled back into a severe braid. In her right hand, she held a silenced semi-automatic pistol, held low and steady with the casual familiarity of a professional assassin.
"Elena?" Emily gasped, the betrayal hitting her like a physical blow to the sternum. "What are you doing? Put the weapon down!"
Elena offered a cold, melancholy smile that lacked any human warmth. "I am sorry, Emily. You were kind to me. You really were. You gave me a life. But you never asked where Julian found me, did you? You never asked why a twenty-two-year-old girl was working as the private administrative assistant to a ruthless sociopath like Julian Sterling."
Victoria’s finger tightened on the trigger. "Who the hell are you?"
May you like
Elena tipped her head slightly, her dark eyes gleaming with venomous pride. "My legal name is Elena Vance-Sterling. Julian is my half-brother. And your father... was mine."
