Chapter 1 - The Blood on the Altar Rail

The morning sun had risen over the jagged spires of Blackwood Castle like liquid gold, illuminating five hundred acres of ancient, mist-shrouded pine. It was supposed to be the coronation of Emily Vance’s life—a lavish, multi-million-dollar union between old East Coast nobility and Julian Sterling, the charismatic tech-venture billionaire whose striking blue eyes and razor-sharp jawline had dominated society magazines for two solid years. Emily stood before the arched French doors of the fourth-floor bridal suite, her delicate hand resting protectively over the pronounced, beautiful curve of her seven-month belly. The bespoke French lace of her gown hugged her form, its five-foot train pooling like sea foam against the polished mahogany floor. Inside her, her unborn daughter gave a gentle, rhythmic kick.
"Just breathe, little one," Emily whispered, a soft, nervous smile touching her lips. "In less than an hour, your daddy makes us whole."
The heavy oak door behind her swung shut with a muffled click. Emily turned, expecting her makeup artist or the wedding coordinator. Instead, standing in the doorway was her older sister, Victoria. Victoria’s bespoke emerald maid-of-honor dress clung to her rigid frame, but her makeup was smudged, her hair wild, and her eyes held a hollow, bloodshot intensity that instantly curdled the air in the room.
"Victoria?" Emily took half a step forward, concern overriding her bridal jitters. "What’s wrong? Where have you been? Julian’s mother was already asking about the rehearsal toasts—"
"Shut up," Victoria rasped, her voice trembling with an emotion so raw it sounded like tearing metal. "Just shut your naive, pathetic mouth, Emily."
Before Emily could process the venom in those words, Victoria crossed the expanse of the suite in three violent strides. She didn't look like a bridesmaid; she looked like a cornered predator. Panic spiked into Emily’s chest. She instinctively wrapped both arms around her belly, backing out through the open French doors and onto the cold stone of the historic balcony. The wind ripped through the four-story drop below, whipping Emily’s cathedral-length veil into a chaotic dance of lace and air.
"Victoria, please, you’re scaring me!" Emily cried, her heels hitting the decorative stone parapet. "Think about the baby!"
"I *am* thinking about the baby!" Victoria shrieked. Her face contorted into an unrecognizable mask of rage and despair. With a sudden, terrifying burst of speed, Victoria lowered her shoulder and rammed violently into Emily’s chest.
The impact drove the air from Emily’s lungs. Her back slammed against the ornate balustrade. To her horror, the historic stonework—supposedly renovated just last month—didn't hold. A sickening *CRACK* echoed across the courtyard below, vibrating right through Emily’s spine as the heavy center column snapped like dry chalk. Emily lost her footing. The sky flipped violently. The horizon vanished, replaced by an abyss of open air and the distant, razor-sharp edge of the marble fountain four stories beneath her.
Emily screamed, her hands reacting purely on primal survival instinct. Her fingers caught the rough edge of the broken balcony slab. The sudden, agonizing jerk nearly tore her shoulders from their sockets. Her wedding dress fluttered wildly against the stone wall as she dangled in the void, her legs kicking helplessly against nothingness.
"Victoria! Help me! Please!" Emily sobbed, her fingernails tearing against the granite, blood immediately welling beneath her cuticles. "I’m slipping! Victoria, PLEASE!"
Above her, Victoria leaned over the fractured ledge. But there was no horror in her sister's eyes. There was only a twisted, manic grin. Victoria began to laugh—a high, broken, hysterical sound that rose above the whistling wind. She raised her dyed satin heel and brought it down hard on Emily’s bridal veil, grinding the delicate fabric into the stone, dragging Emily’s head backward by her scalp.
"YOU DON'T DESERVE HIM!" Victoria screamed into the wind, her voice vibrating with manic euphoria. "You think you won, Emily? You think you get the fairytale? Die with him! Fall!"
Emily’s left hand slipped. Two fingers broke their grip. The strain on her right arm was unbearable, and a searing pain shot through her lower abdomen as her body fought against the laws of gravity. "Baby... my baby..." she whimpered, staring into the face of the sister she had loved her entire life.
Footsteps clattered onto the stone behind Victoria. Elena, a nineteen-year-old banquet maid who had been carrying a tray of champagne flutes into the suite, dropped the silver platter. Crystal shattered across the floor. Without hesitation, Elena threw herself onto the balcony. "Hold on, ma'am! Take my hands!" Elena screamed, dropping to her knees and locking her forearms around Emily’s bloody wrists.
"Get away from her, you stupid bitch!" Victoria snarled. She lunged like a wild animal, her hands clawing at Elena’s hair and neck, trying to peel the young maid’s fingers away from Emily to send them both plunging over the edge.
"LET GO OF HER!"
The roar shook the very foundation of the room. Julian Sterling exploded through the threshold, dressed in an immaculate charcoal-black tuxedo. But the polished, charming prince was gone. His veins bulged like thick cables against his neck, his jaw was clenched so hard a muscle twitched violently, and his eyes burned with an icy, terrifying fury that seemed completely alien. For a split second, Julian didn't look at Emily’s face—his gaze locked with deadly precision onto Victoria.
"Julian!" Emily cried out in agony.
In a fraction of a second, Julian lunged. He didn't pull Victoria back; he struck her with the open palm of his hand, a strike so brutal it hurled Victoria across the balcony floor into the suite's stone wall, where she collapsed, dazed and bleeding from the temple. Moving with chilling efficiency, Julian grabbed Emily under the arms. Veins corded on his forearms as he hauled his seven-month-pregnant bride over the shattered parapet, tumbling with her onto the safe, blood-smeared floor of the bridal suite.
Emily lay gasping, curling into a protective ball around her stomach, sobbing uncontrollably. The entire bridal party and half a dozen security guards poured into the suite, freezing in stunned horror at the sight of the blood, the shattered rail, and Victoria sobbing hysterically on the floor.
Julian held Emily against his chest, his hands firm, his voice soothing. "I’ve got you, my love. You’re safe. You and our child are safe."

Emily clung to him, weeping into his lapel. But as she looked up into the face of her husband-to-be, she caught a glimpse of his expression before he noticed she was looking. He wasn't looking at Emily with relief. He was staring down at Victoria, and across his handsome face swept a slow, deliberate smirk of cold, triumphant malice—a look that chilled Emily deeper than the freezing wind hanging over the four-story drop.
