Chapter 12 - Blood on the Iron Gate

"Get her out! Victoria, clear the wing now!" Emily’s scream shattered the morning peace of Vance Manor like a bullet through crystal.

Victoria burst through the adjoining study doors, barefoot, dropping a stack of quarterly reports that scattered across the polished parquet floor. In less than two seconds, she assessed the terror in her sister’s eyes. Years of trauma had stripped Victoria of her former fragility; she did not panic. She lunged forward, scooped baby Clara from the crib into her arms, and wrapped her body around the infant like a shield of living armor.

"Security team! Alpha lockdown!" Victoria bellowed into the comms unit clipped to her collar. "Code Red! East Wing!"

The manor instantly erupted into a coordinated fortress. Heavy steel blast shutters slammed down over the French windows with a deafening hydraulic hiss. High-decibel alarms wailed across the grounds. Two seconds later, Marcus Hayes, the head of private security and a former Navy SEAL who had protected the Vance family through Julian's trial, burst into the nursery with three armed tactical operators, their assault rifles raised.

"Clear the crib!" Emily shouted, pointing a shaking finger at the blinking red node. "There’s a device in the lining!"

Marcus didn't hesitate. "EOD protocol! Everyone evacuate to the subterranean panic room, now!" He approached the crib with surgical precision, unsheathing a ceramic blade, cutting into the custom silk mattress. He pulled the module out, eyes scanning the tiny electronic payload.

"It's not an explosive," Marcus reported into his headset, his jaw clenched so tightly the muscles knotted beneath his scarred skin. "It’s a military-grade transponder and audio-transmitter. It’s broadcasting a high-frequency live feed. Miss Vance... someone has been listening to every breath inside this nursery for days."

Emily felt the room spin. The walls of her ancestral home, fortified with millions of dollars in modern defense systems, suddenly felt like a transparent cage. "Julian is in supermax solitary," she hissed through clenched teeth. "He has no phone privileges. No unmonitored mail. How is this possible?"

Before Marcus could answer, the security intercom mounted on the wall crackled to life. The frantic, choking voice of the gatehouse guard pierced through the static:

*"Command... Command, we’re breached! Gate four is—oh God, they didn't come to break in... they came to deliver—"*

The line ended with the horrific, sickening sound of tearing metal and a muffled wet thud.

Emily and Victoria exchanged a look of pure dread. Leaving Clara in the reinforced panic room under the guard of four elite operators, Emily, Victoria, and Marcus sprinted toward the main security command center on the ground floor. The monitors displayed sixty-four high-definition camera feeds covering every inch of the perimeter wall.

On Camera 4—the northern iron entrance—the gate stood wide open. Its hydraulic arms had been sheared off by an armored vehicle. But there was no invading army. There were no masked mercenaries.

There was only a single wooden post driven deep into the manicured grass directly beneath the Vance family crest. Nailed to the post was the lifeless body of Agent Miller—the lead federal prosecutor who had put Julian Sterling behind bars twelve months ago.

Pinned to the prosecutor's chest with an ivory-handled dagger was a printed manifest from the Federal Bureau of Prisons, stamped in red ink with the words that turned Emily’s heart to ice:

*INMATE #88419-B: TRANSFERRED TO STATE PSYCHIATRIC FACILITY FOR EMERGENCY EVALUATION. TRANSIT INTERCEPTED. INMATE UNACCOUNTED FOR.*
