Chapter 9 - Ghost in the Grand Ballroom

The silence that fell over the ballroom was not merely quiet; it was the petrified stillness of a cemetery.

Vincent Moretti was dressed in an immaculate, three-piece charcoal suit, his silver hair swept back, his dark eyes burning with lethal, terrifying clarity. He looked not like a man who had been poisoned hours earlier, but like an ancient, vengeful emperor stepping off a battlefield.

To his right walked Frankie "The Hammer," a submachine gun resting across his broad chest.

To his left walked Elena Ramos, wearing a clean, black evening dress Frankie had secured for her, her chin held high, the wolf-head signet ring worn proudly on her thumb.

Marco Vance stumbled backward on the stage, his face draining of every drop of blood until he looked far more like a corpse than Vincent ever had.

"No..." Marco choked into the live microphone, the sound reverberating across the vaulted ceiling like a death rattle. "No... it's impossible... you're dead..."

"Did you miss me, nephew?" Vincent’s voice rolled through the ballroom, without the aid of a microphone, commanding, heavy, and resonant with undisputed power.

The capos from Detroit and New York immediately stepped away from Marco’s stage as if the floor beneath the young underboss was catching fire. Weapons were drawn across the room, but none were pointed at Vincent. In the mafia, loyalty belongs to the living Don—and Vincent Moretti was undeniably alive.

Vincent strode down the central aisle, his polished leather shoes clicking rhythmically against the marble floor. The crowd parted like the Red Sea, men bowing their heads, terrified to meet the gaze of the resurrected patriarch.

"You told these honorable men that I died in my bed," Vincent said, stopping at the foot of the stage, looking up at Marco. "You told them I passed the seat to you."

"Vincent... please..." Marco whispered, his hand shaking violently as he reached toward his jacket pocket for his concealed pistol.

"Don't do it, kid," Frankie warned from behind, raising his barrel.

Vincent turned his back on Marco, facing the assembled underworld royalty.

"Tonight, a treason was committed," Vincent announced to the room. "Not by our rivals in New York. Not by the Russians. But by a jackal I raised in my own house. Marco Vance conspired with Dr. Bradley Evans to inject me with a lethal paralytic. He planned to burn my body before dawn and steal the bloodline cipher."

Murmurs of disgust and outrage rippled through the capos. Betrayal of a Don was one thing; assassinating a patriarch in his sickbed with poison was considered the ultimate act of cowardice.

"And who saved you, Vincent?" demanded Capo Lucchese from the Chicago South Side. "Who pulled you out of the ground?"

Vincent turned, extending his hand toward Elena.

"This young woman," Vincent said, his voice ringing with absolute pride. "Elena Ramos. While my blood kin tried to bury me alive, she took a bullet, broke into an armed facility to steal the antidote, and dragged my body out of hell."

Every eye in the room turned toward Elena. The powerful, hardened killers looked at the young woman with a mixture of shock and profound respect.

Vincent turned back toward Marco, his expression hardening into stone.

"You wanted my seat, Marco," Vincent said softly. "Come down here and take it."

Marco’s mind snapped under the crushing weight of public humiliation and impending execution. With a feral scream of madness, he drew his .45 from his tuxedo jacket and aimed directly at Vincent’s chest.

"I am the boss of this city!" Marco shrieked.

*CRACK!*

Elena was faster.

Having anticipated the move, she drew the stolen service pistol from the folds of her dress and fired. The bullet punched clean through Marco’s right shoulder.

Marco screamed, dropping his weapon, tumbling off the elevated stage to crash heavily onto the ballroom floor at Vincent’s feet.
