Chapter 6 - Whispers in the Dark

Elena scrambled back into the electrical substation, drenched, covered in mud, and clutching the medical supplies to her chest.

Vincent was barely conscious. His skin had turned a faint, terrifying shade of blue around the lips, and his pulse was fluttering at less than forty beats per minute. The neurotoxin was winning.

"Vincent! Wake up!" Elena shouted, dropping to her knees beside him.

She ripped open the sterile syringe packaging with her teeth. Her hands were covered in grease and dirt, but she used an alcohol wipe to sterilize her fingers and Vincent’s forearm. She drew three milligrams of atropine into the barrel, flicked the glass to disperse the air bubbles, and found a patent vein in the Don’s antecubital fossa.

"Breathe, damn you," she whispered, driving the needle into the vein and steadily depressing the plunger.

For sixty seconds, nothing happened.

Elena held his wrist, her tears dropping onto his cold, scarred chest. "Come on... fight it. You're the Iron Wolf of Chicago. Fight it!"

Suddenly, Vincent’s back arched violently off the canvas tarp. A deep, guttural roar tore from his throat as the atropine surged through his bloodstream, blocking the acetylcholine receptors and snapping his heart back into a furious, galloping rhythm.

His eyes snapped open, blazing with life. He sat bolt upright, gasping for air as if breaking through the surface of an icy lake.

"I'm here! You're safe!" Elena cried, steadying him by his broad shoulders.

Vincent sucked in three deep, shuddering breaths. The blue tint faded from his lips, replaced by a flush of genuine color. He looked down at the syringe in Elena’s hand, then at the blood on her forehead and the stolen pistol tucked into her waistband.

"You got the medicine," he said, his voice deep, steady, and filled with an awe he rarely felt for any living human being.

"I had to break a few laws," Elena said, letting out a half-sob, half-laugh of pure exhaustion. "And I think I broke a man's wrist."

Vincent wiped a tear from her cheek with his thumb. "You're a warrior, Elena Ramos."

Before she could respond, the screech of tires echoed from the road outside the switching yard.

Through the cracks in the wooden siding, Elena saw two black sedans kill their headlights as they pulled up to the abandoned substation. Four men stepped out into the rain, wearing heavy trench coats, their hands concealed in their pockets.

Leading them was Dr. Bradley Evans.

The physician looked manic, his face pale and haggard. He was holding a tracking tablet in his hands.

"They're inside!" Evans hissed to the hitmen. "The radio transponder in the veterinary clinic alerted my phone! Marco wants them both liquidated—no bodies, just burn the building down!"

Elena felt her stomach drop into an abyss. "They tracked me."

Vincent slowly climbed to his feet. He was still weak, but the paralytic was receding, and his towering, six-foot-two frame seemed to fill the shadowy room with an aura of terrifying menace.

"Take the gun, Elena," Vincent whispered, his eyes narrowing into cold slits.

"What are you going to do?"

Vincent picked up a four-foot length of rusted steel rebar from the floor, balancing it in his calloused hand like a gladiatorial broadsword.

"I am going to remind Dr. Evans," Vincent whispered, "why nobody in this city ever crossed me twice."
