Chapter 10 - The Iron Wolf's Mercy

The ballroom remained frozen in breath-held horror.

Marco lay on the polished marble, clutching his bleeding shoulder, sobbing like a terrified child. The arrogance, the fine Italian tailoring, the veneer of power—all of it had peeled away, revealing the pathetic, desperate creature underneath.

Vincent looked down at him. There was no rage in the Don’s eyes. Only an infinite, chilling disgust.

"You broke the cardinal rule, Marco," Vincent said, his voice echoing in the dead silence. "You let greed make you sloppy. And you forgot that this family was built on blood, loyalty, and honor."

"Uncle... please..." Marco wept, pressing his face against Vincent’s polished shoes. "Spare me... exile me... I'll leave the country! I'll never come back!"

Vincent didn't answer. He looked up at Frankie.

"Take him to the basement of the meatpacking plant," Vincent ordered quietly. "Let the Commission captains oversee the interrogation. When he has named every dirty cop and crooked judge on his payroll... give him the end he deserves."

Frankie nodded grimly. Two mountain-sized enforcers stepped forward, grabbing Marco by his arms and dragging him screaming across the marble floor toward the service exits. Marco’s cries for mercy grew fainter and fainter until the heavy double doors swung shut, extinguishing his voice forever.

Vincent turned his attention back to the room. The three hundred guests stood motionless, waiting for their sentence.

"The funeral is canceled," Vincent said, a wry, dark smirk playing on his lips. "The bar is open. Drink my champagne. And remember what happens to those who bet against the Iron Wolf."

A collective sigh of relief swept through the room, followed by nervous laughter and the rapid clinking of glasses as the band hastily resumed playing.

Vincent turned to Elena. He gently took her hand, leading her away from the noise and the sycophants, out through the grand French doors onto the private terrace overlooking the dark, sprawling majesty of Lake Michigan.

The rain had stopped. A cold, crisp wind swept off the water, clearing the smog and revealing a blanket of sharp, brilliant stars above the Chicago skyline.

Vincent leaned against the stone balustrade, looking out at the city he ruled.

"You did well tonight, Elena," he said softly.

"I just did what was right," Elena replied, leaning beside him, her small hands resting on the cold limestone. "I couldn't let them kill you like an animal in a cage."

Vincent reached into his vest pocket and pulled out the wolf-head signet ring with the biometric chip. He took Elena’s right hand and slid the heavy silver band onto her index finger.

Elena gasped, trying to pull her hand back. "Vincent, no... this is your empire. I can't take this."

"You already have it," Vincent said, his obsidian eyes locking onto hers with unshakeable resolve. "The biometric chip has been recoded to your pulse. Without you, the accounts cannot be accessed. The politicians cannot be directed. You are no longer a maid in my house, Elena."

"Then what am I?" she whispered, her heart hammering against her ribs.

"You are my Consigliere," Vincent Moretti declared, his voice carrying the finality of an iron decree. "The conscience of the Moretti family. The only person in this city whose hands are clean enough to hold the truth."

Elena looked down at the snarling wolf on her finger, then out at the glittering lights of Chicago.

She had started the night as an invisible South-Side maid scrubbed raw by poverty and fear.

Now, she stood at the right hand of the most feared predator in America.

And as the city slept below them, Elena knew that the real war for Chicago was only just beginning.
