Chapter 7 - Behind Cold Bars

The subterranean holding cells of the Manhattan Central Booking Facility smelled of rust, stale urine, and cheap floor disinfectant.

Vanessa Sterling-Vance sat huddled on a cold steel bench bolted to the concrete wall. Her emerald designer dress was torn at the shoulder, stained with spilled soup from a fellow inmate, and covered in grime. Her manicured fingernails were chipped, her hair tangled, and her face smeared with ruined makeup.

She had spent six hours in this cage, surrounded by petty criminals, drug dealers, and street fighters who had spent the entire night laughing at her sobbing fits.

"Vance!" the heavy iron gate rattled as a guard banged his nightstick against the bars. "Visitor. Attorney-client room two. Let’s move, Duchess."

Vanessa jumped up so fast she nearly tripped over her bare feet; her designer heels had been confiscated during processing. "My father!" she gasped, hope flaring in her chest. "My father finally paid the bail!"

The guard laughed in her face, roughly escorting her down the concrete corridor, her wrists handcuffed to a belly chain that clinked loudly with every step.

She was pushed into the small, windowless interrogation room. A single stainless steel table sat in the center under buzzing fluorescent lights.

Sitting across the table was not her father. Nor was it Julian.

It was Arthur Vance.

He looked pristine. He wore a crisp charcoal suit, his hair combed neatly, with a small, professional flesh-colored dressing over the stitches on his forehead. Beside him sat a silver thermos of black coffee and a manila legal envelope.

Vanessa froze. Her hope instantly morphed into pure, unadulterated venom. She lunged forward, the belly chain jerking her back as the guard shoved her into the opposite metal chair.

"You sadistic old bastard!" she spat, her teeth bared like a rabid animal's. "You think you've won?! As soon as my father talks to his contacts in the Governor's office, you are going to be sued into oblivion! I am going to take every single brick of that disgusting manor! I will make you rot in the streets!"

Arthur unscrewed the cap of his thermos, poured a small cup of hot coffee, and took a slow, deliberate sip. He set the cup down. He did not look angry. He looked at her the way an exterminator looks at a common house roach.

"Your father isn't calling the Governor's office, Vanessa," Arthur said, his voice quiet, calm, and terrifyingly steady. "Your father is currently sitting in a private lounge at Teterboro Airport. Or rather, he *was*."

Vanessa’s eyes flickered with a sudden, sharp dread. "What... what do you mean *was*?"

Arthur slid the manila envelope across the steel table. "Open it."

With shaking, handcuffed hands, Vanessa pulled the flap open and dumped the contents onto the table.

They were flight manifests and passport photocopies.

"Two tickets," Arthur explained smoothly. "Chartered Gulfstream flight to Zurich, Switzerland, scheduled for departure at 5:00 AM this morning. Registered under the names Richard Sterling and Eleanor Sterling."

Vanessa blinked rapidly, her brain struggling to process the information. "Zurich...? But... they were supposed to move into the manor tonight. The moving trucks..."

"There were never any moving trucks, Vanessa," Arthur revealed, leaning forward, his eyes piercing straight into her soul. "Your parents knew the loan syndicate was closing in. They knew you were trying to force a conservatorship to sell the manor. But your parents were never planning to stay with you and Julian."

Arthur pulled out a copy of a bank transfer order stamped 3:00 AM.

"Your father took the final six hundred thousand dollars remaining in Julian’s private liquid investment fund—the money Julian granted him access to last week—and converted it into offshore bearer bonds. They were abandoning you, Vanessa. They packed four suitcases, chartered a private jet, and were leaving you and Julian behind to face the loan sharks, the fraud charges, and the prison sentences."

"No... no, no, no..." Vanessa shook her head frantically, tears spilling down her dirty cheeks. "That’s a lie! You forged these! My father loves me! My mother would never leave me!"

"They didn't just leave you," Arthur continued relentlessly. "They threw you to the wolves to buy themselves a forty-eight-hour head start."

Vanessa collapsed forward against the table, her forehead hitting the cold steel, sobbing uncontrollably as her entire manufactured reality shattered into microscopic dust. The parents she had defended, the prestige she had worshiped, the criminal web she had woven—it was all a grotesque illusion.

"Why are you here, Arthur?" she wept into the metal table, her voice completely broken, stripped of all arrogance. "Did you come here just to watch me die inside?"

"No," Arthur said softly, rising from his chair and buttoning his suit jacket. "I came here to deliver a message from the loan syndicate."

Vanessa froze. She slowly raised her tear-stained face, terror turning her eyes completely white.

Arthur leaned down until his face was inches from hers.

"I bought their debt, Vanessa," Arthur whispered into her ear. "All twenty-two million of it. I purchased the notes from the syndicate at seven o’clock this morning. Your parents aren't flying to Zurich. Federal marshals intercepted them on the tarmac twenty minutes ago."

Arthur straightened up, looking down at the broken shell of the woman who had tried to destroy his life.

"Your parents now owe that debt to me. And as for you... the State prosecutor has officially added aggravated assault, wire fraud, and grand larceny conspiracy to your indictment. You will spend the next fifteen years of your youth behind these concrete walls. Enjoy your stay, Vanessa."

Arthur turned and knocked on the metal door. The guard opened it, and the old man walked out into the light, leaving her screaming his name into the empty, cold steel of the cell.
