Chapter 2 - The Hand That Strikes

The private limousine cut through the torrential rain, carrying Arthur toward the private wing of Saint Jude’s Memorial Hospital. Sitting in the plush leather backseat, Arthur did not look like a beaten victim. His hand steadily held the blood-soaked linen against his forehead, but his breathing was slow, rhythmic, and methodical.
He slipped his burner phone from his interior coat pocket. His fingers, untrembling despite the adrenaline surging through his veins, quickly typed a simple, encrypted message to a contact named *KANE*:
**"PHASE ONE IS COMPLETE. EXECUTE."**
Arthur leaned his head back against the leather seat, closing his eyes. *Phase One.* The physical confrontation. The undeniable, unprovoked assault. The trigger that would strip the velvet gloves off the legal machinery he had spent the last sixty days assembling in absolute secrecy.
Thirty-five miles away, inside Vance Manor, the atmosphere was thick with delusional victory.
Vanessa was pouring herself a fresh flute of vintage champagne, pacing the length of the opulent living room beneath a portrait of Arthur’s late wife, Margaret. Julian slumped on the velvet sofa, anxiously gnawing at his thumbnail, staring at the shattered glass and pool of red wine still staining the dining room floor.
"We shouldn't have pushed him that hard, Vanessa," Julian stammered, his leg bouncing erratically. "He looked... different. He didn't yell back. He just pushed past me. What if he calls the board? What if he cuts off my executive trust allowance?"
"Shut up, Julian!" Vanessa snapped, whirling around, her eyes flashing dangerously. "Your father is an obsolete dinosaur. The board answers to performance metrics, and the board knows he hasn’t attended an operational meeting in six months. Tomorrow morning, we file the petition for temporary emergency conservatorship. We have Dr. Caldwell’s preliminary evaluation notes. With this incident—where an 'erratic, senile' Arthur assaulted *you* while you tried to help him—the court will hand us the keys to Vance Manor and the proxy voting rights to Vance Holdings before noon!"
Suddenly, the deep, rhythmic chime of the manor's wrought-iron gate intercom buzzed, followed closely by the roar of heavy engines up the private driveway.
"See?" Vanessa beamed, setting her champagne flute down with a grin. "That must be my parents. Go open the front doors, Julian. It’s time we officially welcome the new masters of this estate."
Julian exhaled a long breath, forcing a weak smile onto his pale face, and walked toward the grand foyer. He pulled back the massive oak doors, expecting to see the chartered luxury transport carrying Richard and Eleanor Sterling.
Instead, the harsh, alternating blue and red strobes of emergency lights sliced through the sheets of rain.
Two uniformed officers from the State Police Tactical Division stood on the broad stone porch, their heavy tactical jackets slick with water, their hands resting naturally near the holsters of their service weapons.
Julian’s breath caught in his throat. He backed away a step. "W-what is this? Can I help you, officers?"
Vanessa strutted into the foyer, her triumphant expression instantly vaporizing as she caught sight of the badges. "Why are the police here?" she demanded, her voice losing its haughtiness, replaced by a defensive, brittle edge. "This is private property. Who authorized you to enter our grounds?"
The taller of the two officers, Sergeant Miller, stepped across the threshold, his boots squeaking loudly against the pristine Italian marble. His stone-cold gaze swept across the foyer, lingering on the red wine stains visible on the dining room archway in the background.
"Julian Vance? Vanessa Sterling-Vance?" Miller asked, his tone completely flat.
"Yes, that's us," Julian mumbled, his skin turning ash-gray. "Is there... did my father get into an accident? He was on his way to the hospital..."
"We are here regarding a felony domestic violence report filed twenty minutes ago from Saint Jude’s Memorial," Officer Miller stated, pulling a digital tablet and a set of steel handcuffs from his utility belt. "A report accompanied by certified medical trauma intake documentation."
Vanessa’s heart skipped a violent beat. Panic flared behind her eyes. She whipped her head toward Julian. Julian’s hand was already instinctively diving into his slacks pocket, frantically pulling out his smartphone.
"Julian! Give me that phone!" Vanessa hissed, lunging at her husband like an enraged cat. Her mind raced back to the hundreds of encrypted group chats, the coercive text messages, the detailed strategies they had exchanged outlining their plot to force Arthur into signing over the property deeds under extreme psychological duress. If the police seized Julian’s phone, their digital footprint was completely laid bare.
She grabbed the edge of Julian's phone, desperately attempting to enter the lock screen to trigger a factory wipe.
"PUT THE PHONE DOWN. NOW!"
The second officer moved with shocking speed, his hand clamping down on Vanessa's wrist with the force of an iron vise, twisting her arm away and breaking her grip on the device.
Vanessa shrieked in pain and outrage. "Get your filthy hands off me! Do you know who my family is?! You cannot touch me!"
Before the chaos could escalate further, the heavy front door swung open once more.
A tall, impeccably dressed man stepped into the foyer. He wore a charcoal bespoke three-piece suit, an umbrella folded neatly in his left hand. In his right, he carried a heavy, reinforced black leather binder embossed with the gold seal of Kane, Mercer & Cross—Manhattan’s most feared criminal and corporate litigation firm.
It was Marcus Kane. The legal executioner of the Vance family for over thirty years.
Marcus didn't glance at the officers. He didn't glance at the dripping rain outside. He strode directly past Julian and Vanessa, walking straight into the dining room where the blood and wine still pooled.
*BANG!*
Marcus Kane slammed the heavy black binder onto the dining table, squarely atop the shattered shards of crystal.
He turned slowly, adjusting the gold cufflinks on his wrists, fixing Julian and Vanessa with a look of absolute, merciless disgust.
"Good evening, Julian. Vanessa," Kane said, his voice echoing through the silent mansion like the toll of a funeral bell. "I suggest you take a very good look at this file. Inside is sixty days of continuous, forensic surveillance."
Julian trembled, stepping into the room. "Surveillance? What... what are you talking about, Marcus? This was just an argument! A family dispute!"
"Threatening text messages. Forged psychiatric evaluations. Unauthorized lien applications filed against Vance Manor," Marcus Kane listed coolly. "And financial wire transfers linking you to an offshore account in the Cayman Islands designed to liquidate this property within forty-eight hours of Arthur’s death or incapacitation."
Julian looked like he was about to vomit. Vanessa’s hands shook uncontrollably as she stared at the thick binder.
Marcus Kane leaned forward, planting both hands on the table, his cold eyes boring directly into Vanessa's terrified face.
