Chapter 6 - The Emergency Injunction

By 11:30 PM, the storm outside Vance Manor had subsided into an eerie, thick mist that rolled across the manicured lawns like smoke.
Inside the mansion, Julian Vance sat curled on the floor of the great hall, clutching his knees to his chest. His eyes were bloodshot, his throat raw from crying. Every shadow cast by the wall sconces seemed to mock him. The silence was deafening, occasionally punctured by the phantom echo of his wife’s hysterical screams as the police dragged her away.
Suddenly, the silence was shattered by the sharp screech of tires on wet gravel.
Julian scrambled to his feet, a sudden, desperate surge of hope bursting into his chest. *Vanessa? Her lawyers? Her parents?*
He rushed to the grand front doors and threw them open.
Three large, industrial vans bearing the insignia of *Titan Security & Master Locksmiths* were parked in a semi-circle around the fountain. Behind them, a fleet of black town cars had blocked the driveway.
Out of the lead town car stepped Arthur Vance.
His silhouette was tall, imposing, and completely unbroken. He wore a heavy black overcoat over his cashmere sweater, the white medical bandage on his forehead standing out like a badge of war. Flanked on either side of him were Marcus Kane and four burly, uniformed private security contractors armed with sidearms and tactical gear.
"Dad!" Julian choked out, stumbling down the stone steps into the cold night mist, reaching out with both hands. "Dad! You’re alive! You’re okay! Oh God, Dad, I'm so sorry! I didn't know! You have to believe me, I didn't know what she was planning with the syndicate! She manipulated me! She lied to me about everything!"
Arthur didn't stop walking. He didn't even look down at Julian as his son fell to his knees directly in front of him on the wet flagstones, clutching at the hem of Arthur’s heavy wool coat.
"Dad, please look at me!" Julian sobbed, his voice breaking into a pathetic wail. "I'm your son! Your only child! Don't let them do this to me!"
Arthur stopped. He slowly looked down at the grown man groveling at his feet. There was no anger in Arthur’s eyes. There was no rage. There was only an infinite, barren void of profound disappointment. And to Julian, that emptiness was a thousand times more terrifying than any wrath.
"A son," Arthur spoke, his voice vibrating with a quiet, devastating power, "protects his father's house. A son does not barter his mother's memory to pay the debts of corrupt strangers. A son does not slam his hands on a table and demand his father surrender his dignity while blood is pouring from his face."
Arthur pulled his coat out of Julian's trembling fingers.
"Chief," Arthur commanded without turning around.
The head of the private security team stepped forward, flanked by two locksmiths carrying heavy metal cases and pneumatic drilling equipment.
"Secure the perimeter," Arthur ordered. "Change every deadbolt, every biometric scanner, and every digital keypad code on this property. If anyone without my express authorization attempts to cross that gate, have them arrested for criminal trespass immediately."
"Right away, Mr. Vance," the security chief barked.
"Wait! No!" Julian shrieked, scrambling up from the flagstones. "My clothes are inside! My laptop! My car keys! Dad, this is my home!"
Marcus Kane stepped between Julian and the front door, pulling a thick, court-stamped legal document from his briefcase and holding it inches from Julian's tear-stained face.
"Julian Vance," Marcus declared loudly. "This is an Emergency Ex Parte Injunction and Order of Protection signed by Justice Harrington forty-five minutes ago. You are legally barred from coming within one thousand feet of Arthur Vance, Vance Manor, or any commercial asset owned by Vance Holdings."
"You... you’re kicking me out?!" Julian gasped, his chest heaving as if he couldn't get oxygen into his lungs. "Tonight?! In the rain?! I have nowhere to go! My accounts are tied to the family trust!"
"Your trust card was revoked at 10:15 PM," Marcus said coldly. "Your corporate credit lines have been frozen pending a full federal forensic audit regarding your illegal wire transfers to Dr. Caldwell. You have exactly fifteen minutes to retrieve one piece of luggage containing personal clothing, supervised by security. After that, you will vacate the premises on foot."
"Dad! Please!" Julian turned, screaming toward the front porch where Arthur stood under the grand portico. "I have no money! How am I supposed to eat?! Where am I supposed to sleep?!"
Arthur paused at the threshold of the home he had built from nothing. He looked back at his son one last time.
"For thirty-two years, Julian, you lived in a castle you didn't build," Arthur said softly. "Tonight, you find out what the real world feels like. Welcome to the foundation."
May you like
With that, Arthur stepped inside, and the massive, three-hundred-pound solid oak doors slammed shut behind him with the finality of a tomb.
