Chapter 5 - The Downward Spiral

The humiliation outside Blake Tower was public, brutal, and orchestrated with surgical precision.

As Adrian and Vanessa were ushered through the revolving doors onto the sidewalk of Wacker Drive, a wall of flashes exploded in their faces. Catherine had not merely called the board meeting; her public relations team had alerted every business reporter, financial blogger, and tabloid photographer in the city.

Reporters from the *Chicago Tribune*, *Bloomberg*, and *Crain’s Chicago Business* surged forward, thrusting microphones past the umbrella-holding security team.

“Mr. Blake! Is it true that Whitmore Holdings has removed you for corporate embezzlement?”

“Adrian, can you confirm the federal subpoena regarding offshore slush funds?”

“Miss Moore, were you aware the luxury assets were funded through corporate fraud?”

“Get out of my face!” Adrian shouted, throwing his hands up to shield his eyes from the blinding strobes. He grabbed Vanessa’s arm, roughly yanking her toward the curb where he expected his private driver to be waiting.

The black town car was gone. In its place sat an ordinary yellow city cab, idling in the exhaust fumes and rain.

Vanessa pulled her arm free, tears of fury streaking her mascara. “Don't touch me! Adrian, you lied to me! You told me you controlled eighty percent of the empire! You told me Catherine was an irrelevant nobody who would take a ten-million-dollar settlement and disappear!”

“Shut up, Vanessa! Just get in the damn cab!” Adrian hissed, opening the taxi door and shoving her inside before diving in behind her. “O’Hare Airport,” Adrian ordered the driver.

“Where are we going?” Vanessa shrieked, clutching her designer bag against her chest. “I don't have my passport! All my clothes, my jewelry, my Birkin collection—it’s all in the penthouse! They changed the locks!”

“We’re going to the private hangar,” Adrian said through clenched teeth, his mind racing through escape routes. “I have a personal charter line on standby at Signature Flight Support. We’ll fly to Miami. I have sixty thousand dollars in an offshore operating card that isn't tied to the domestic banking system. We’ll lay low until my legal team files an injunction.”

The cab crawled through the congested Chicago traffic, windshield wipers slapping rhythmically against the glass. Adrian pulled out his phone, his thumb tapping the screen to access his private aviation app.

The screen loaded, displaying a single notification:

*Charter Account 884-Bravo: SUSPENDED BY ACCOUNT ADMINISTRATOR (Whitmore Family Trust).*

Adrian stared at the screen, a cold sweat drenching his back. Catherine had not merely cut the major arteries; she had methodically severed every single capillary. The jets, the real estate, the lines of credit, the corporate perks—it was all registered under the sprawling web of holding companies his father-in-law had designed decades ago.

“No… no, she couldn't have,” Adrian whispered, slamming the phone against his knee.

“Adrian?” Vanessa’s voice had lost its indignation; it was now laced with pure, unadulterated panic. “What happened to the plane?”

Adrian didn't answer. He turned to look at her. In the harsh, gray daylight filtering through the taxi window, without the backdrop of luxury restaurants and five-star hotel suites, Vanessa looked different. The glamorous veneer was stripped away. She looked terrified, shallow, and increasingly dangerous. She wasn't an ally; she was a witness.

“Vanessa,” Adrian said, his voice dropping into a desperate, conspiratorial whisper. “The documents you signed last month… the corporate filings for the logistics consulting firm. Where did you put the physical copies?”

Vanessa blinked, her lips trembling. “What… what documents?”

“The shell company!” Adrian snapped, grabbing her wrist with bruising force. “*Meridian Global*! You signed as the managing director! The papers that Nathan sent over! Where are they?”

Vanessa recoiled, trying to pull her hand away. “You told me they were just tax forms for our wedding gifts! You said I didn't need to read them!”

“Where are they, Vanessa?!”

“I don't have them!” she cried out, the cab driver glancing nervously into the rearview mirror. “A man came to the Drake yesterday afternoon! He said he was an auditor from the state treasury and that if I didn't provide all personal records associated with Meridian, I would be indicted as a co-conspirator in an interstate money-laundering scheme! I gave him the flash drive and the signed folder!”

Adrian’s breath caught in his throat. The world seemed to tilt on its axis. “You… you gave them to him?”

“He said they would arrest me, Adrian!” she sobbed. “I don't want to go to prison! I’m twenty-six years old! I didn't do anything wrong! You bought me those things!”

Adrian leaned back against the cheap vinyl seat of the taxi, his chest collapsing inward.

Catherine hadn't just uncovered his betrayal. She had systematically orchestrated the evidence, used Adrian’s own mistress to execute the paper trail, and secured the final nail in his coffin before Adrian had even thrown the divorce papers across the table.

The taxi driver cleared his throat, slowing down near the highway interchange. “Hey, mister. You still going to O’Hare? The news on the radio just said the SEC and the State Police are looking for a guy named Adrian Blake. That you?”
