Chapter 4 - The Mistress at the Gates

The boardroom remained suffocatingly still as the image on the screen burned into Adrian’s retinas. He opened his mouth, but the smooth, silver-tongued rhetoric that had carried him through a hundred hostile negotiations failed him completely.
“That… that was an asset diversification project,” he stammered, the absurdity of the lie ringing hollow even in his own ears. “The property was acquired as an executive retreat. To host foreign investors—”
“Save it, Adrian,” Robert Sterling, Catherine’s lead litigator, interrupted. The attorney had a reputation for destroying corporate raiders on Wall Street, and his eyes were as cold as slate. “We have sworn depositions from three junior accountants whom you personally threatened with termination if they didn't bypass the internal auditing software. That is criminal fraud under Title 18 of the United States Code. We have also received full cooperation from the banking authorities in Zurich and the Cayman Islands.”
Catherine leaned back, turning to the board. “Gentlemen, Eleanor. You have reviewed the forensic findings. The Whitmore Trust has exercised its debt-conversion rights, making us the fifty-one percent majority owner. We are prepared to inject forty million dollars of private liquidity immediately to stabilize the firm, absorb the fraudulent write-offs, and protect our vendors—under one condition.”
Arthur Vance nodded grimly. “Name it, Catherine.”
“A unanimous resolution terminating Adrian Blake as Chief Executive Officer, effective immediately, for gross moral and financial misconduct with cause,” Catherine said without a hint of hesitation. “No golden parachute. No stock option vesting. Complete asset forfeiture of all unvested shares, and the immediate surrender of all corporate property.”
“I’m voting aye,” Eleanor Cross said instantly.
“Aye,” Arthur Vance echoed.
Around the table, one by one, the board members Adrian had considered his personal disciples raised their hands.
“Aye.”
“Aye.”
“Aye.”
Adrian felt his knees buckle slightly. He gripped the edge of the conference table to keep himself upright. Seven years of empire-building, seven years of brutal eighteen-hour days, seven years of climbing to the pinnacle of Chicago high society—erased in less than ninety seconds.
“You can’t do this,” he whispered, his voice trembling with a mixture of disbelief and blind rage. “My name is on the building! Blake Enterprises!”
“The branding firm has already submitted the redesign proposal,” Catherine replied coolly, sliding a piece of paper across the table toward him. “As of noon today, this company is reverting to its original registered name: Whitmore Holdings. Security will escort you down to the lobby.”
Before Adrian could answer, the heavy double doors of the boardroom were thrown open with a dramatic bang.
Every head in the room swung around.
Standing in the doorway, breathing heavily, was Vanessa.
She had bypassed the floor’s reception through sheer persistence, her face flushed beneath layers of expertly applied makeup. She was dressed in a tailored cream trench coat, an Hermès handbag clutched in her hand, her blonde hair slightly damp from the Chicago drizzle outside.
“Adrian!” she gasped, ignoring the room full of stony-faced executives. “They won't let me into the Gold Coast apartment! The doorman told me the locks have been changed! He said the lease was terminated by the primary tenant! What is happening? Who are these people?”
Adrian’s face drained of what little color it had left. “Vanessa… get out of here. Right now!”
Vanessa took three steps into the room, her high heels clicking loudly against the polished hardwood border of the carpet. Her eyes locked onto Catherine, who remained seated at the head of the table, watching the spectacle with the calm amusement of a Roman empress watching a gladiator bleed.
“Is this her?” Vanessa demanded, her voice rising into a sharp, shrill crescendo. “Is this the woman who’s trying to ruin us? Adrian, tell them! Tell them who I am! You told me she was a ghost! You told me she was an empty shell who lived off your achievements!”
A heavy, suffocating silence descended upon the room. The board members looked down at their notebooks, embarrassed by the sheer vulgarity of the intrusion.
Catherine slowly stood up. She walked around the table, her movements fluid and deliberate, until she stood three feet from the younger woman.
Catherine was taller, and in her tailored ivory suit, she radiated an aura of old-money authority that made Vanessa’s flashy designer clothes look suddenly cheap, like a child playing dress-up in stolen garments.
“You must be Vanessa,” Catherine said softly, her voice carrying a terrifying quietness.
Vanessa lifted her chin, trying desperately to project defiance. “I’m Adrian’s fiancée! As soon as the divorce is finalized, I am going to be the first lady of this company!”
A collective, dry chuckle rippled through the lawyers behind Catherine.
Catherine looked down at the Hermès bag on Vanessa’s arm. “That bag was purchased on May 14th with a corporate credit card belonging to Whitmore Holdings’ logistical subsidiary. The apartment you were locked out of this morning? It was never leased to Adrian. It was owned by an investment trust managed by my late father.”
Vanessa’s eyes widened, darting between Catherine and Adrian. “Adrian? What… what is she talking about?”
“Adrian doesn't own that apartment, Vanessa,” Catherine continued, stepping closer. “He doesn't own this company. He doesn't even own the car he drove here in. He was a caretaker who mistook his uniform for a crown. And as of five minutes ago… he is completely unemployed.”
Catherine turned her head slightly. “Marcus.”
The heavy-set security director stepped through the boardroom doors, flanked by two armed building guards and two Chicago police officers.

“Please escort Mr. Blake and his guest from the premises,” Catherine said cleanly. “And if either of them sets foot on Whitmore property again, have them arrested for criminal trespassing.”
