Chapter 8 - The Plaza Gala

The Grand Ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was a glittering palace of gilded gold leaf, towering floral arrangements of white orchids, and crystal chandeliers that reflected the diamonds of New York’s top one percent.

Over four hundred high-society guests, dressed in black-tie tuxedos and haute couture gowns, mingled over flutes of Dom Pérignon.

At the center of the VIP terrace stood Arthur Vance. He was an imposing man of sixty-eight, with slicked-back silver hair, cold predatory eyes, and the arrogant posture of a man who believed the world existed solely to serve his balance sheet. Beside him stood Julian, looking smug and victorious in a custom velvet dinner jacket.

Clinging to Julian’s arm was Chloe Harrington, wearing an emerald-green sequined maternity gown, basking in the flattering attention of the society photographers whose flashbulbs illuminated her synthetic blonde hair.

“You handled the press masterfully, Father,” Julian murmured, sipping his vintage champagne. “Clara won’t dare show her face in this town again. Carter Reid won't even return her calls once our defamation countersuit hits the docket.”

Arthur Vance adjusted his diamond lapel pin, his voice low and contemptuous. “Clara Montgomery was a weak, sentimental little girl. Her father was soft, and she inherited his softness. A Vance does not yield to subordinates. You announce the pregnancy tonight, Julian. We turn this scandal into a legacy narrative before the markets open on Friday.”

“Marcus is being released on bail tomorrow morning,” Chloe added, her voice purring with delight. “Once we settle the trust dispute, Julian, we need to buy that summer compound in Newport. I want Clara to see us in *Vogue* every single month.”

Suddenly, the heavy bronze doors of the Grand Ballroom swung open.

The ambient chatter of four hundred elite guests began to die down, ripple by ripple, until a strange, suffocating silence swept through the massive hall.

Every head turned toward the entryway.

Walking into the room, flanked by Carter Reid on one side and two high-ranking officials from the Manhattan District Attorney's office on the other, was me.

I wasn't wearing white. I wasn't hiding behind oversized sunglasses.

I was wearing a striking, custom-tailored scarlet silk column gown that draped elegantly over my frame, highlighting my flawless silhouette. Around my neck was my late father’s pride: the Montgomery Star, a legendary fifty-carat sapphire necklace that gleamed like deep ocean water under the chandelier light.

And walking beside me, with her silver hair styled into an elegant, chic French pixie cut, wearing a dazzling midnight-blue gown, was my mother, Eleanor.

Her head was held high. Her posture was regal. The bruises were gone, replaced by the unbreakable grace of a queen returning to claim her throne.

Julian’s champagne glass slipped from his fingers.

*CRASH.*

The delicate crystal shattered on the parquet floor, splashing expensive alcohol across Chloe’s emerald hem.

Arthur Vance’s face turned from smug satisfaction to purple, pulsating fury. “What is the meaning of this?! Who allowed them inside?!”

Before Arthur could signal the private security guards, Carter Reid raised a single finger, nodding toward the master audio-visual control booth overlooking the ballroom.

The lights in the Grand Ballroom abruptly dimmed.

The high-society dance music cut off into total, cavernous silence.
