Chapter 3 - The Price of Treachery

The silence that fell over the reception area was suffocating. Dr. Linda Sterling had stepped out of Consultation Room 4, her silver-rimmed glasses perched on her nose, taking in the scene with absolute horror. The receptionist sat with her hand hovering over the silent alarm button.
I didn't scream. I didn't cry. The pain was too vast, too cosmic to be released in cheap tears. It settled deep into my marrow, hardening into pure, unadulterated steel.
“Fourteen weeks,” I said, my voice echoing like cold rain against glass. “You slept with her fourteen weeks ago. When I was in Boston, burying my father.”
Julian’s face went from pale to gray. He knelt down beside me, his hands reaching to touch my arm, but I jerked away as if he were covered in plague.
“Clara, please,” Julian pleaded, his voice dropping into a desperate whisper. “It was a mistake! One drunken night after your dad’s memorial. Marcus and Chloe were there, I was grieving for you, I was vulnerable—she didn't tell me she was pregnant until six weeks ago!”
“A mistake?” I held up the second document, the one bearing Julian’s sharp, arrogant signature beside the official seal of the Montgomery Shipping Trust. “Is this five-hundred-thousand-dollar initial retainer a mistake, Julian? Is using my father’s legacy to pay off your mistress a drunken accident?”
Chloe snatched the remaining papers from the floor, clutching them against her chest like stolen jewels. She abandoned all pretenses of shame. Rising to her feet, she glared down at me with pure, distilled venom.
“Stop playing the pathetic victim, Clara!” Chloe snarled, her voice sharp enough to shatter crystal. “Julian never loved you! You were just a convenient, quiet little mouse with an eight-figure trust fund that his family needed to bail out Vance Capital! He came to my bed because you were too boring, too prude, too obsessed with your pathetic, sick mother!”
“Chloe, shut the hell up!” Julian roared, turning on her with genuine terror in his eyes. He knew what I held in my hands. He knew the legal ramifications. “Get out to the car! Now!”
“No, Julian!” Chloe screamed back. “Why are you begging her? The wedding is dead! Her mother is a nobody, she is a nobody, and my baby is carrying the Vance legacy! Tell her the truth!”
“The truth?” I whispered, standing up to my full height. The adrenaline surged through my veins, masking the cold sweat of my own early pregnancy. “The truth is that you are an accomplice to grand larceny, Chloe. And you, Julian… you are going to prison.”
Julian stood up, his face contorting from desperate remorse into something sinister, cold, and predatory. The mask of the charismatic prince had completely slipped off, revealing the hollow monster underneath.
“Prison?” Julian chuckled, though his eyes twitched with panic. “With what evidence, Clara? You’re holding a medical file that you obtained without authorization in a private clinic. Dr. Sterling, tell Miss Montgomery that these documents are protected under strict HIPAA regulations. If she walks out of this clinic with those papers, I will have her arrested for theft before she reaches the curb.”
Dr. Sterling stepped forward, her voice trembling but firm. “Julian Vance, you forged Miss Montgomery’s signature on that trust fund release. You claimed she was hospitalized and designated you as power of attorney. I processed that transfer under false pretenses. Do not lecture me on the law in my own facility.”
Julian’s eyes narrowed into slits. “Be very careful, Linda. My father sits on the board of directors that funds this entire wing. You like your tenure here? You like your license? You stay out of this.”
He turned back to me, taking a menacing step closer, his tall frame looming over me. “Give me the papers, Clara. We settle this like adults. You walk away, you keep your little downtown apartment, and I won't sue your mother for breaking her NDA regarding our wedding contract. If you push me on this, I will crush you. I have the top five law firms in Manhattan on retainer. You have nothing.”
I looked at the man I had loved for four years. The man whose child was currently growing inside me—a child he would never, ever touch.
Slowly, deliberately, I raised the trust fund authorization document.
With two fingers, I slid my phone out of my pocket.
The screen was already lit up. The red recording indicator had been blinking for the last four minutes, capturing every single confession, every threat to the doctor, every confirmation of the embezzlement.
Julian’s eyes locked onto the screen. His breath stopped.
“I have nothing?” I whispered, holding the phone before his face. “I have your voice confessing to fraud. I have your mistress confessing to extortion. And unlike you, Julian… my father made sure I had Carter Reid on speed dial.”
At the mention of Carter Reid—the most feared corporate litigator in New York, a man who had brought down hedge funds and dismantled multi-billion-dollar empires—Julian’s swagger vanished entirely.
“Clara, wait! Don’t do this!”
Before he could lunge for the phone, the clinic’s heavy glass doors flew open.
Standing in the entryway, breathing heavily with a look of pure, unhinged fury, was Marcus Harrington. He had tracked Julian’s car. His knuckles were raw, his coat unbuttoned, his gaze locking onto me like a rabid dog spotting prey.
“There she is,” Marcus growled, stepping into the clinic. “You touched my sister yesterday, you psycho bitch. Julian, grab her phone!”

The clinic erupted into chaos.
