Chapter 7 - The Poisoned Press

By Wednesday morning, the scandal had erupted across the internet with the destructive force of a hurricane.

Julian’s father, Arthur Vance—a ruthless patriarch whose influence extended deep into Manhattan’s print media and television networks—had launched an aggressive counter-offensive.

I woke up in the master bedroom of the penthouse to my phone buzzing relentlessly. Carter Reid had sent me five direct links.

The headlines across three major tabloid sites were scandalous:

**"RUNAWAY BRIDE SCANDAL: CLARA MONTGOMERY ACCUSED OF PSYCHOTIC BREAK BEFORE BILLION-DOLLAR VANCE WEDDING"**

**"HIGH-SOCIETY CATFIGHT: BRIDE MUTILATES BRIDESMAID IN BRUTAL PRE-WEDDING ATTACK"**

**"VANCE FAMILY FILES MULTI-MILLION-DOLLAR DEFAMATION LAWSUIT AGAINST UNHINGED HEIRESS"**

Chloe Harrington had given an exclusive, tearful television interview to an entertainment network. Sitting on a plush couch, wearing a stylish blonde wig that didn't quite hide her neck bandages, she sobbed into a designer handkerchief, claiming I had attacked her with scissors in an unprovoked fit of paranoid jealousy, and that her heroic brother Marcus had stepped in merely to protect her and Julian’s unborn child.

Public sentiment on social media was vicious. Thousands of anonymous comments flooded my private accounts:

*“Lock her up!”*

*“Spoiled heiress attacks pregnant woman!”*

*“Julian Vance dodged a massive bullet!”*

Eleanor sat at the marble kitchen island, staring at the television screen with pale lips. “Clara… they’re making you look like a monster. The whole world thinks you’re insane.”

I poured myself a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice, taking a calm, steady sip.

“Let them celebrate, Mom,” I said quietly. “A cornered animal always makes the most noise right before it bleeds out.”

The phone rang. It was Carter.

“You’ve seen the morning circus, I presume?” Carter asked, his voice laced with dry amusement.

“Arthur Vance’s PR machine is working overtime,” I said. “He’s trying to poison the jury pool before the federal indictments drop.”

“He’s doing more than that,” Carter replied. “Arthur is hosting the annual Vance Global Philanthropy Gala tomorrow night at the Plaza Hotel. It’s their flagship event. Every billionaire, senator, and federal judge in the tri-state area will be in attendance. Julian is planning to walk the red carpet with Chloe on his arm, announcing their engagement and framing it as a ‘triumph of love over tragedy.’”

I gripped the edge of the granite counter. “He’s using a high-society charity gala to legitimize the woman who assaulted my mother and stole my inheritance?”

“Arthur believes if he parades Chloe in front of high society before the SEC moves, the Vance name will be protected by public sympathy,” Carter explained. “He thinks he’s bulletproof.”

“Carter,” I said, my voice dropping an octave into pure, lethal focus. “Do we still hold the Montgomery Foundation’s platinum donor seats for that gala?”

A heavy, deliberate pause fell over the line. Then, Carter let out a slow, wicked laugh.

“The Montgomery Foundation donated two million dollars to that charity three months ago,” Carter said. “You don't just hold seats, Clara. As the primary donor, you hold the contractual right to deliver the opening sponsor address from the main stage.”

A cold shiver of pure anticipation raced down my spine.

“Order me a gown, Carter,” I whispered. “Make it blood red. And make sure the master AV technician at the Plaza is on our payroll by five PM.”
