Chapter 8 - The Confrontation

The words hung in the opulent air of The Plaza ballroom like a death sentence.

Daniel’s tongue felt thick and useless in his mouth. “I… I am Daniel Sterling,” he stammered, trying to regain an ounce of his former bravado. “I am her husband.”

“*Ex*-husband,” Claire’s voice rang out.

She stepped out from behind Julian’s protective shoulder. The golden fabric of her gown caught the light of a thousand crystal prisms, casting radiant halos across her face. Her hazel eyes were cold, sharp, and totally devoid of hatred. That was the most terrifying part to Daniel—there was no anger in her eyes. There was only absolute, indifferent nothingness. She was looking at him the same way one looks at a speck of dirt beneath a designer heel.

“Claire… please,” Daniel pleaded, his voice breaking into a pathetic whine that caused several high-ranking socialites nearby to grimace with second-hand embarrassment. “You don't understand what happened. Lauren… Lauren was a mistake. She manipulated me! She took advantage of my stress with the business! I was blind, Claire! I threw away the best thing in my life!”

A soft, musical laugh escaped Claire’s lips. It wasn't bitter. It was the laugh of a woman who had realized how small her demons actually were.

“Lauren didn't manipulate you, Daniel,” Claire said, her voice clear and carrying to every eager ear in the VIP circle. “You chose her because she was as shallow and hollow as you are. You thought she reflected your success, while I reflected the hard work you were desperate to pretend you never had to do.”

Daniel took a desperate step forward, but Julian’s hand clamped onto Daniel’s shoulder. The grip was like an industrial vise; Daniel winced, feeling the billionaire’s fingers press directly into his nerve endings.

“Mr. Sterling,” Julian murmured, his face inches from Daniel’s. “You are currently trespassing in a private VIP enclosure. The only reason my security team hasn't thrown you down the marble stairs onto Fifth Avenue is because Miss Montgomery requested five minutes to look at the wreckage of her past.”

Daniel ignored Julian, looking desperately at Claire. “Claire, they’re going to foreclose on Midtown Horizon! Blackstone Ridge is filing the papers at midnight! That was our dream! You drew the first lines of that building on a napkin in our tiny apartment in Durham! You can’t let them destroy it! Just tell Thorne Capital to issue an equity guarantee. You have the power now! Save the company… save *us*!”

The crowd of billionaires, foreign investors, and society leaders watched the spectacle with rapt fascination. Phones were discreetly pulled from tuxedo pockets; video was being recorded. The legendary Daniel Sterling of North Carolina was on his knees, begging the woman he had discarded like trash.

Claire tilted her head, her forty-carat diamond catching the light.

“You’re right, Daniel,” she said softly. “I did draw those plans on a napkin in Durham. I spent three years refining the structural physics of that tower. I poured my soul into those foundations.”

Daniel’s face lit up with a sickening, opportunistic glimmer of hope. “I knew it! I knew you still cared! We can fix this, Claire. We can go back to Charlotte tomorrow. We’ll rebuild together—”

“You didn't let me finish,” Claire interrupted, her voice dropping into a register of terrifying finality.

She reached into Julian’s breast pocket, pulled out a slim, gold-trimmed envelope, and held it between two manicured fingers.

“Midtown Horizon isn't going to be foreclosed by Blackstone Ridge tonight, Daniel.”

Daniel blinked, confused. “It’s… it’s not?”

Claire smiled. It was the smile of an executioner laying the blade against the block.

“No,” she said. “Because forty-eight hours ago, Thorne Capital acquired Blackstone Ridge’s entire commercial mezzanine debt portfolio. Including the eighty-five million dollars you owe.”
