Chapter 7 - The Woman in Gold

It was impossible.

Daniel blinked furiously, shaking his head as if trying to wake himself from a hallucinatory nightmare brought on by sheer exhaustion and cheap bourbon.

*Claire?*

The woman who had driven away in a dented 2012 Honda Civic? The woman who used to have pencil smudges on her cheek and wear oversized flannel shirts while reviewing structural invoices at midnight?

This woman was an immortal goddess carved from gold and diamonds. The way she held her chin, the cool, detached amusement in her hazel eyes as she surveyed the sea of international billionaires—it was a woman he had never met, yet knew in the deepest marrow of his bones.

Julian Thorne offered her his arm with an unmistakable gesture of reverence. Claire placed her gloved hand lightly on Julian’s forearm, and together, they descended the grand marble staircase. The crowd parted naturally, murmuring in admiration.

“Who is she?” a European diplomat whispered near Daniel’s ear.

“That’s Claire Montgomery,” an American hedge fund manager answered in hushed, reverent tones. “She’s the Chief Architectural Strategist for Thorne Capital. She designed the new Neo-Manhattan Green Corridor. Thorne just appointed her managing partner of their twelve-billion-dollar sovereign infrastructure fund. She’s the most powerful woman in commercial development on the East Coast.”

Daniel felt as though he had been hit in the chest with a wrecking ball. *Twelve billion dollars.*

His mind spun backward, replaying the words he had spat at her across that wine-stained marble counter in Myers Park:

*“You have nothing without me! You ARE nothing without me!”*

The memory burned through his brain like liquid lye. All those years, Daniel had convinced himself that Claire’s quiet nature was weakness. He had convinced himself that because she didn't boast, didn't demand the spotlight, and didn't crave the shallow applause of country club banquets, she was just a support beam to be used and discarded.

He hadn't realized that she was the cornerstone holding up the entire sky.

A sudden, desperate madness overtook Daniel. The fear of financial ruin, the absolute terror of Harold Gross’s threats, and the suffocating realization of his colossal mistake collided in his chest.

*If she’s the managing partner… she can save me,* his warped, narcissistic brain rationalized. *We were married for seven years. She loved me. She gave up everything for me once. She won't let me drown if I just talk to her. She just wanted to prove a point. She did all of this to get my attention!*

Daniel abandoned all decorum. He shoved past the stanchions, nearly knocking over an elderly French art collector.

“Claire!” he called out, his voice hoarse, cutting through the sophisticated murmur of the ballroom.

Several security guards immediately turned toward him, their hands instinctively moving to their jackets. Claire and Julian were walking toward the VIP stage where a cluster of foreign dignitaries was waiting.

“Claire!” Daniel shouted louder, breaking into a brisk, undignified jog across the polished dance floor. “Claire, it’s me! It’s Daniel!”

The music from the string quartet slowed. Heads began to turn. Dozens of the wealthiest people on the planet looked at Daniel as if he were a rabid stray dog that had somehow slipped into a royal palace.

Claire stopped.

She didn't turn around immediately. She took a slow, deliberate breath, whispered something to Julian, and then, with glacial composure, turned to face the commotion.

Daniel reached the perimeter of the VIP circle, his hair disheveled, his bow tie crooked, his eyes bloodshot and wild.

“Claire,” Daniel gasped, stepping toward her, reaching out a hand. “Thank God. Claire, I’ve been looking for you everywhere. You have to listen to me—”

Before his fingers could come within three feet of her gown, an iron wall moved between them.

Julian Thorne stepped directly into Daniel’s path.

Julian was taller, broader, and his presence carried the crushing weight of a titan looking down at an insect. The expression on the billionaire’s face wasn't anger; it was a terrifying, lethal calm. He looked at Daniel’s outstretched hand, then slowly raised his eyes to meet Daniel’s gaze.

Daniel froze. The air around them seemed to drop twenty degrees.

Julian looked Daniel up and down, taking in the cheap desperation, the trembling hands, and the pathetic, unraveling facade of a small-town grifter.

Then, Julian spoke. His voice was low, smooth, and possessed an authority that silenced every breath within thirty feet:
