Chapter 7 - The Arrest on Federal Live Feed

By 11:30 AM, Richard Sterling had somehow managed to claw his way out of Cook County Jail.
His emergency high-profile defense attorney, Nathan Cross—a man whose hourly rate exceeded two thousand dollars—had pulled every political lever in the state of Illinois to secure an emergency bail hearing before an old friend on the bench. Richard was released on a staggering twenty-million-dollar surety bond, backed by his remaining liquid assets and the promises of his Wall Street allies.
He had not showered. He had not slept.
He had changed into a fresh navy suit brought to him by his assistant, but his eyes were bloodshot, his collar was slightly crooked, and his jaw was covered in thick, dark stubble. He smelled of sweat and desperation.
"We go to the headquarters now," Richard barked as he climbed into the back of Cross's armored Mercedes Maybach. "We call a press conference! I need the cameras, Nathan! If I control the narrative on live television, Victoria can't push me out! We paint this as an unhinged, vindictive wife trying to destroy her husband out of jealousy!"
Cross looked uneasy, his tablet constantly buzzing with incoming calls from the SEC. "Richard, you shouldn't be speaking publicly. The U.S. Attorney’s office is preparing a secondary indictment. We don't know what they have."
"They have nothing!" Richard roared, slamming his fist against the leather headrest in front of him. "It's all circumstantial! Vanessa is an uneducated bimbo whose testimony won't survive five minutes of your cross-examination! Step on the gas! Get me to the Wacker Drive building!"
Twenty minutes later, the Maybach screeched to a halt in front of the gleaming glass tower of Vance Enterprises Global.
The plaza outside was packed with satellite news trucks. Every major network—CNN, Fox Business, MSNBC, Bloomberg—had their cameras set up on the granite steps. Richard had had his PR team leak his arrival thirty minutes prior, orchestrating what he believed would be his grand counter-offensive.
As Richard stepped out of the Maybach, a wall of camera flashes blinded him. Dozens of microphones were thrust in his face.
"Mr. Sterling! Are the embezzlement allegations true?"
"Did you assault your wife at the Palmer House gala?"
"Is the board removing you today?"
Richard raised his hands, flashing the charismatic, million-dollar smile that had made him the darling of Wall Street for nearly a decade. He straightened his tie and stepped up to the microphone bank set up on the plaza.
"Members of the press, citizens of Chicago," Richard began, his voice projecting confidence, authority, and warmth. "What happened last night at the Palmer House was an unfortunate, private domestic tragedy that has been grossly mischaracterized by individuals seeking to orchestrate an illegal corporate hostile takeover."
The cameras whirred. Millions of viewers across America were watching the live feed.
"My wife, Victoria, is a woman suffering from severe emotional instability," Richard continued, his tone dripping with manufactured concern. "Following the tragic death of her father years ago, she has struggled to handle the pressures of her inherited wealth. Last night, in a fit of irrational jealousy, she staged a confrontation and attempted to use her family's trust to sabotage a multi-billion-dollar enterprise that employs thousands of hard-working Americans."
He leaned closer to the microphones, his voice hardening into steel.
"I am the Chief Executive Officer of this company. I built it. I run it. And I am walking into that building right now to resume my duties and protect our shareholders from this dangerous, vindictive stunt!"
A smattering of applause broke out from a small cluster of paid PR staffers Richard had planted in the crowd.
Then, the high-definition, three-story digital billboard above the entrance to the building flickered.
The corporate logo disappeared.
In its place, an automated live audio-video transmission began playing.
The sound blasted from the building's exterior sound system, echoing across the plaza and drowning out Richard’s voice.
*“If you don't keep your mouth shut, Vanessa, you’ll end up like the old man.”*
Richard’s blood ran cold. The charismatic smile instantly died on his lips.
The voice booming from the speakers was undeniably his own. It was a crystal-clear, high-definition recording taken from inside the Lake Shore Drive penthouse study four months ago.
*“What do you mean, Richard?”* Vanessa’s recorded voice replied, trembling.
*“Arthur Vance thought he was going to cut me out of the company,”* Richard’s recorded voice sneered, dripping with psychotic arrogance. *“He thought he could leave everything to his precious, useless daughter. He didn't realize that three drops of synthetic digitalis in his evening whiskey would make his heart stop like an old clock. The coroner didn't suspect a thing. And if Victoria pushes me, she’ll have the exact same heart condition.”*
The entire plaza fell into dead, paralyzed silence.
The journalists stopped asking questions. The cameramen stood frozen, their lenses locked onto Richard’s face as every trace of color, life, and humanity drained from his features.
The recording was being broadcast live on CNN, Fox, Bloomberg, and MSNBC to over forty million homes worldwide.
"No..." Richard whispered, stumbling backward down the granite steps. "No... turn it off! TURN IT OFF!"
He spun around to run toward the Maybach, but a wall of federal agents in tactical vests stepped out from the crowd, weapons drawn.
Behind them stood Victoria Vance.
She was standing at the top of the plaza steps, looking down at him from behind dark sunglasses. Her hands were tucked into the pockets of her charcoal suit. She didn't look angry. She didn't look triumphant. She looked like a judge watching a stray dog being removed from the courtroom.
Agent Sarah Miller stepped forward, her service weapon at low ready, flanked by four armed federal marshals.
"Richard Sterling," Agent Miller’s voice echoed across the quiet plaza. "Drop to your knees and place your hands behind your head."
"Victoria!" Richard screamed, his voice breaking into a hysterical, animalistic shriek. "VICTORIA! IT'S A DEEPFAKE! THEY FAKED THE VOICE! YOU CAN'T PROVE IT!"
"The digitalis bottle was found in your floor safe, Richard," Victoria said, her voice amplified through the building's exterior PA system. "With your fingerprints on the glass, your purchase records traced to the dark web, and your mistress's sworn deposition testifying to the delivery."
Victoria took off her sunglasses, her icy gray eyes burning down into his shattered soul.
"My father built an empire that saved thousands of lives through medicine, Richard," she whispered. "And you used medicine to murder him."
Two federal marshals slammed Richard forward onto the cold, wet concrete of the plaza. His face was shoved hard against the stone, right in front of the flashing cameras.
The heavy steel cuffs snapped shut around his wrists with a sickening, final crunch.

"Richard Sterling, you are under arrest for first-degree capital murder," Agent Miller stated, her knee driving into his shoulder blades as the cameras broadcast his total, unmitigated destruction to the entire planet.
