Chapter 2 - The Ghost of Sterling-Vance Global

The ballroom felt like an open-air crypt.
The glittering elite of Chicago stood frozen like marble statues, their champagne glasses suspended in mid-air. The whispers had stopped entirely. In high finance, violence was tolerable—billionaires frequently ruined lives, broke laws, and bankrupted families behind closed doors. But losing control? Losing the company? That was the only unforgivable sin. And watching the city's golden boy dismantled in five seconds flat was a spectacle they could neither stomach nor turn away from.
"This is a mistake!" Richard shouted, his voice cracking into a pathetic, high-pitched squawk. He spun toward Marcus Kane, spit flying from his lips. "Marcus, you bastard! I hired you! I plucked you out of a boutique accounting firm in Boston and made you the CFO of a forty-billion-dollar multinational! You owe me your entire career!"
Marcus stopped two feet away from his former boss. He didn't blink. At fifty-two, with silver hair and a razor-sharp jawline, Marcus had the calm, unyielding posture of an undertaker.
"Correction, Richard," Marcus said quietly. "You didn't hire me. Arthur Vance did. Fifteen years ago, Arthur knew his heart was failing. He also knew his daughter, Victoria, was too brilliant to spend her youth managing quarterly earnings calls and fighting off parasitic private equity sharks. He hired me to run the operational finances with one specific directive: protect Victoria's inheritance from anyone who attempted to steal it."
Marcus adjusted his platinum wire-rimmed glasses, his eyes drifting coldly toward Vanessa Laurent.
"Especially from opportunistic parasites."
Vanessa gasped, stepping behind Richard as if his frame could shield her from the mounting catastrophe. "Richard, tell them to stop! You're the CEO! Call the police! She’s assaulting us!"
"Assaulting you?" Victoria let out a low, humorless laugh that sent shivers down the spines of the closest onlookers. She smoothed down the emerald silk over her hips, completely indifferent to the blood drying on her lip. "Vanessa, darling, you should be praying the police don't arrive. Because when they do, they aren't coming to protect you. They’re coming to execute three federal arrest warrants for wire fraud, corporate espionage, and grand larceny."
Vanessa's face went from pale to ash gray. Her perfectly sculpted lips parted, but no sound came out.
"What lie did he tell you, Vanessa?" Victoria asked, stepping closer. The crowd parted around her like the Red Sea. "Did Richard promise you that once he finalized our divorce, you would become the first lady of Sterling-Vance? Did he tell you that the penthouse on Lake Shore Drive would be put in your name? Did he promise you that the fifty-million-dollar luxury lifestyle brand you’ve been bragging about on Instagram was funded by his genius venture capital foresight?"
"Shut up!" Richard lunged forward again, but Harrison’s hand caught him by the collar of his Tom Ford tuxedo, twisting the fabric until Richard choked for breath.
"Keep your hands down, Mr. Sterling," Harrison warned, his voice low and vibrating with dangerous intent. "Or I will break your fingers one by one on this marble floor, and the police will rule it as standard executive protection."
Richard gasped for air, his eyes bulging as he glared at Victoria. "You psycho... you've been spying on me? You've been digging into my personal life?"
"Your personal life?" Victoria tilted her head, her expression pure ice. "Richard, you can sleep with every cocktail waitress, PR intern, and gold-digging socialite from here to Monaco for all I care. The moment you violated our marriage vows, you ceased to be my husband. But the moment you transferred thirty-two million dollars from the Sterling-Vance Medical Research Foundation to an offshore dummy corporation in the Cayman Islands to buy this woman a yacht and a villa in Saint-Tropez... you ceased to be a CEO. You became a common thief."
A loud gasp rippled across the room.
The Sterling-Vance Medical Research Foundation was the crown jewel of the conglomerate. It funded pediatric oncology trials across the Midwest. To steal from corporate shareholders was business; to steal from dying children to finance a mistress's yacht was social and financial suicide.
Several prominent investors who had been standing near Richard immediately took five steps back, physically distancing themselves from the radioactive man.
"That's a lie!" Vanessa shrieked, her voice shrill with terror. "Richard bought those for me with his own money! His personal executive bonuses!"
"Richard doesn't have an executive bonus," Marcus Kane interjected smoothly, opening the black leather dossier he held. He pulled out a crisp, single-page bank statement bearing the seal of the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority. "All executive compensation packages above five million dollars require the personal signature of the Chairwoman of the Vance Family Trust. Victoria Vance."
Marcus looked up, fixing Richard with a pitiless glare. "Richard’s signature on those Cayman fund releases was an unauthorized forgery. We have the digital forensic timestamps, the IP routing through the Palmer House suite, and the video surveillance from the penthouse library."
Richard’s legs began to shake. The reality was setting in, hitting him like a freight train. He looked around the room, desperately searching for an ally.
He saw Robert Sterling, his own uncle, standing near the bar. "Uncle Bob! Tell her! Call the legal team! Convene an emergency meeting of the executive committee!"
Robert Sterling, a silver-haired patriarch who had spent forty years on Wall Street, looked at his nephew with pure disgust. He slowly set his tumbler of bourbon on the bar, turned his back on Richard, and walked away.
"Bob!" Richard screamed.
"Save your voice, Richard," Victoria commanded, her tone cutting through his hysteria. "You are going to need it when the grand jury convenes tomorrow morning."
Suddenly, the grand double doors of the Palmer House ballroom swung open with a resounding thud.
Four men in charcoal suits entered, flashing gold badges pinned to their lapels. Behind them were two uniformed officers from the Chicago Police Department. The lead agent—a tall, hawk-nosed woman with short brown hair and steel-rimmed glasses—marched directly toward the center of the room.
"Federal Bureau of Investigation," Agent Sarah Miller announced, her voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings. "We have a federal warrant for the immediate seizure of all electronic devices and personal assets belonging to Richard Sterling and Vanessa Laurent."
Richard staggered backward until his spine hit the edge of a mahogany pillar. "No... no, wait! This is a domestic dispute! She's framing me! Victoria, you can't do this! I am your husband!"
Victoria looked at him, her eyes completely devoid of warmth, remorse, or pity.

"You stopped being my husband the second your hand hit my face, Richard," she whispered. "And you stopped being a free man the second I activated Protocol Seven."
