Chapter 9 - The Reckoning of Madison Vance

The Los Angeles County Twin Towers Correctional Facility smelled of floor wax, human sweat, stale coffee, and cold, institutional steel. It was a world entirely devoid of ambient lighting, soft linens, and complimentary champagne.

In an interrogation room on the third floor, Madison Vance sat behind a scratched stainless-steel table, shivering uncontrollably.

They had taken her ruby-red gown. They had taken her diamond earrings, her synthetic hair extensions, and her fake eyelashes. She was now dressed in a stiff, oversized two-piece orange jumpsuit made of rough, abrasive polyester that chafed against her skin. Without her makeup, her contouring, and her ring lights, she looked hollow, pale, and ten years older. Her dark circles were deep and bruised, her lips chapped and bleeding.

Across the table sat Marcus Vance.

He was not there as her attorney. Despite sharing the same last name, there was not a drop of relation between them—only the vast, impassable chasm between an apex predator of corporate law and an insect caught in the legal web. Marcus had placed a single manila folder on the steel surface.

"I... I want to make a deal," Madison stammered, her voice cracking as she wrapped her cuffed hands tightly around her chest. "I’ll testify against Grant. I’ll tell the prosecutors everything he did! I’ll tell them how he wired the money, how he hid the assets, how he planned to leave Claire stranded with all the tax debt!"

Marcus adjusted his gold cufflink, not even blinking.

"Miss Vance," Marcus said smoothly, "we do not need your testimony. We have Grant Mitchell’s server logs, his personal correspondence, his burner phones, and his financial ledgers. We have enough evidence to convict him twenty times over. Your cooperation is worth precisely zero."

Tears of pure panic spilled down Madison’s pale cheeks. "Then why are you here?! Why did you come to see me?!"

Marcus opened the folder, sliding three distinct documents across the cold metal table.

"I am here on behalf of Whitmore Global Brands and our seventy-two affiliated luxury retail partners."

He tapped the first document with his fountain pen.

"Item one: Your multi-year brand ambassadorship with *Maison de L’Or* cosmetics. The parent company is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Whitmore Family Trust. Clause 9: The Morality and Public Disrepute Provision has been triggered. Not only has your contract been terminated effective immediately, but the brand is demanding the return of your two-million-dollar advance, plus three million in liquidated brand damages."

Madison gasped, her eyes bulging. "Two million?! I spent that! I spent that on my followers! I bought a house in Calabasas!"

"You mean the house with the adjustable-rate mortgage currently held by Pacific Trust Bank?" Marcus countered with a faint, chilling smile. "Pacific Trust was acquired by Samuel Whitmore in 2018. Foreclosure proceedings commenced forty-five minutes ago."

He tapped the second document.

"Item two: Your social media accounts. Under the terms of the federal injunction regarding illicit proceeds, all accounts bearing the name 'Madison Vance' have been frozen as commercial assets subject to forfeiture. The platforms have complied. Your Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube channels have been permanently suspended."

"My accounts?!" Madison screamed, lunging across the table until the metal chain connecting her handcuffs to the floor bolt jerked violently, cutting into her wrists. "You can't do that! That’s my life! That’s my entire career! I spent eight years building that audience! Eight million people follow me!"

"Nobody is following you, Miss Vance," Marcus said coldly, leaning forward until his eyes were inches from hers. "Right now, your comment sections are filled with five hundred thousand messages calling you an accomplice to child-cancer charity theft. If your accounts were live, your engagement would be purely radioactive. In the digital world, you are already a ghost."

Marcus slid the third document forward. It was a formal civil judgment, stamped by a federal judge.

"Item three: Miss Claire Whitmore’s personal civil suit for intentional infliction of emotional distress, defamation, and tortious interference with marital relations. Claire has secured a preliminary attachment on every asset you possess. Your luxury cars, your designer wardrobe, your remaining bank balances—everything will be auctioned off next Tuesday. The proceeds will go directly to the oncology ward at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles."

Madison broke down completely, sobbing so hard that her forehead slammed against the cold steel table. The hard metal felt like ice against her skin.

"Please..." she wailed, her voice muffled against the metal. "Please, tell Claire I’m sorry! I’ll apologize publicly! I’ll make a video! I’ll get on my knees on live television and beg for her forgiveness! Just leave me something! Don't leave me with nothing!"

Marcus Vance stood up, buttoning his tailored jacket. He picked up his gold pen and placed it neatly into his breast pocket. He looked down at the weeping, shattered influencer with the absolute detachment of an executioner wiping down his blade.

"Claire Whitmore does not watch apologies, Miss Vance," Marcus said quietly. "And she certainly does not forgive people who mistake her grace for weakness. You wanted the spotlight. You pushed your way onto the red carpet. Now... you will spend the next five years enjoying the view from a federal prison cell."

Marcus turned and walked toward the heavy steel door.

"Wait!" Madison shrieked, rattling her chains frantically against the floor bolt. "Wait! What about Grant?! Is he getting bail?! Can he help me?!"

Marcus paused at the threshold, glancing back over his shoulder with a look of pure, clinical pity.

"Mr. Mitchell’s bail was set at twenty-five million dollars, cash only. He attempted to use the deed to the Wilshire penthouse as collateral."

"And?!" Madison gasped, clinging to the thinnest thread of hope.

"And," Marcus replied, "the bailiff laughed in his face before marching him directly to the maximum-security holding wing. Goodbye, Miss Vance."

The heavy steel door slammed shut with a deafening, hydraulic boom that echoed down the empty corridor, leaving Madison Vance alone in the fluorescent glare, weeping into the empty air of her new reality.
