Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Vine

The mention of the District Attorney struck Grant Mitchell with the physical force of a sledgehammer. The color didn't just drain from his face; his entire skin took on an ashen, grey tint.
Embezzlement.
The word hung in the cool night air like a toxic cloud. The paparazzi, who had initially been snapping photos of what they assumed was merely a juicy celebrity cheating scandal, suddenly realized they were documenting the catastrophic collapse of a multi-billion-dollar corporate criminal enterprise. Live television networks across three continents cut into their prime-time programming with breaking news banners:
**BREAKING: APEX CAPITAL FOUNDER GRANT MITCHELL ACCUSED OF MASSIVE FRAUD ON LIVE BROADCAST AS BILLIONAIRE SAMUEL WHITMORE INTERVENES.**
"Embezzlement?" Grant gasped, his voice cracking into a ragged sob as he pushed himself up from the floor, his eyes wild and bloodshot. "That’s a lie! That’s slander! I never stole a dime! Every allocation was approved by the board!"
Marcus Vance let out a dry, humorless chuckle as he tapped on his tablet. The screen immediately cast a pale blue glow across his sharp features.
"Approved by the board, Mr. Mitchell?" Marcus asked with surgical precision. "You mean the board comprised of your two frat brothers from Dartmouth, whom you paid half a million dollars a year in 'consulting fees' to rubber-stamp your decisions? Did the board also approve the twelve million dollars wired from the Apex Liquidity Reserve directly into an offshore account in the Cayman Islands under the name 'Vance Luxury Holdings'?"
At the mention of 'Vance Luxury Holdings,' Madison took three rapid steps away from Grant, her jaw dropping in sheer panic.
"Wait!" Madison shrieked, waving her manicured hands wildly at the cameras. "I don't know anything about that! That was an investment! Grant told me it was a venture capital fund for my luxury swimwear brand! He told me it was completely clean money!"
"Clean money?" Claire turned her head, her gaze piercing right through the influencer. "It was money meant for the California Children’s Oncology Trust, Madison. The very charity this gala was organized to fund tonight."
The crowd erupted in collective disgust. Gasps of horror echoed from the wealthy patrons standing near the entrance. In high-society Los Angeles, vanity and infidelity were easily forgiven, sometimes even celebrated as scandalous entertainment. But stealing from a children’s cancer hospital? That was social and legal suicide.
Several prominent venture capitalists who had been drinking champagne near the rope immediately turned their backs, walking swiftly toward the valet station to distance themselves from the radioactive wreckage of Grant Mitchell.
"You animal," an elderly woman in diamonds muttered, spitting onto the carpet near Grant’s shoes.
"Madison, help me!" Grant pleaded, his voice breaking as he reached out toward his mistress, his eyes wide and frantic. "Tell them! Tell them you signed the partnership agreements! You’re an officer of that holding company! If I go down, you’re going down with me!"
Madison’s face contorted into an expression of pure, unadulterated hatred. The manufactured glamour, the sultry smile, the delicate socialite persona she had spent years cultivating vanished instantly, replaced by the feral survival instincts of a cornered predator.
"Get your filthy hands off me, you loser!" Madison screamed, violently slapping Grant’s hand away. Her voice was harsh, screeching through the courtyard. "Don't you dare drag me into your pathetic mess! I was manipulated! I was a victim! You lied to me about everything! You told me you were worth four billion dollars! You told me you owned private jets, islands, and real estate empires!"
She lunged forward, her long acrylic nails swiping perilously close to Grant’s eyes.
"You’re just a cheap, pathetic con artist who used me for clout! I never loved you! You were disgusting in bed, you’re balding, and you have the personality of a wet rag! I only stayed with you because of the money!"
The raw, humiliating brutality of her words stripped the final layer of Grant’s arrogance away. He stood there, trembling in his bespoke tuxedo, exposed before the entire world not as an untouchable master of the universe, but as a foolish, easily manipulated mark who had traded an empire for a venomous snake.
"Madison..." Grant whispered, completely broken. "I bought you the Ferrari. I paid off your mother’s mortgage..."
"With stolen money!" Madison yelled, turning toward the nearest camera and instantly adopting a theatrical, tearful sob. "To all my followers, please... I am a victim of financial grooming! Grant Mitchell coerced me into signing documents I didn't understand! My legal team will be filing a full restraining order immediately!"
"Save your breath, Miss Vance," Marcus Vance interrupted, his voice cutting through her performance like a bone saw. "As a matter of fact, the District Attorney’s Economic Crimes Division was briefed at 8:30 PM. A freeze order has already been placed on Vance Luxury Holdings. The Ferrari you drove here tonight? It’s currently being hooked to a flatbed tow truck in the hotel parking structure."
Madison’s theatrical tears froze instantly on her cheeks. "My... my car?"
"Not your car, Miss Vance," Marcus said coldly. "Asset forfeiture. And given that you actively signed the wire authorizations, I suggest you retain a very expensive criminal defense attorney within the hour. Though, judging by your frozen bank accounts, you may have to settle for a public defender."
Madison looked around the sea of cameras, realizing with crushing terror that nobody was buying her act. The reporters were smiling, taking furious notes, capturing every second of her public downfall. She let out a strangled, pathetic whimper, hitched up the hem of her expensive ruby gown, and sprinted away from the red carpet on foot, stumbling awkwardly in her four-inch heels as she ran toward the dark, indifferent streets of Los Angeles.
No limousines waited for her. No security escorted her. She vanished into the shadows, a ruined socialite whose fifteen minutes of fame had just expired into an eternity of legal nightmares.
Grant watched her disappear, his mouth hanging open.
Then, he looked back at Claire.
The ivory gown she wore seemed to glow under the moonlight, completely untarnished despite the tear at the bottom. She looked untouchable. She was the Whitmore heiress—a woman with the power to build nations, yet she had spent four years cooking his meals, ironing his shirts, and listening to his endless complaints with patient, loving eyes.
And he had thrown her onto the asphalt for a woman who wouldn't even share an umbrella with him in the rain.
"Claire..." Grant choked out, falling to his knees once more, the cold moisture of the spilled champagne on the ground soaking through his trousers. "Claire... my love... my queen... please... don't do this to me. I was blind. I was poisoned by pride. You are the only woman who ever truly loved me. Please, give me one more chance. Punish me! Take all the money! Just don't destroy me!"
Claire looked down at him. There was no anger left in her eyes. There was only the devastating, absolute silence of indifference.

"I didn't destroy you, Grant," Claire whispered, her voice carrying across the silent crowd like a prayer for the dead. "You destroyed yourself the very moment you believed you were too big to fall."
