Chapter 6 - The Fall Through the Walls

The descent down the dumbwaiter shaft was a nightmare of screaming iron and falling debris. Isabella clamped her teeth shut, using her uniform apron as a friction pad to slow the burning descent of the steel cable between her hands. Wood splintered against the brick shaft walls as the cage rattled violently.
Five floors down, with a bone-jarring thud, the platform slammed into the secondary stops above the industrial basement kitchen.
Isabella was thrown forward onto the cold stainless-steel counter of the prep station, tumbling hard onto the kitchen floor. She lay there for three agonizing seconds, gasping for air, her palms bleeding from friction burns. The air here was ice-cold, smelling of raw meat, bleached tile, and burning insulation.
Above her, distant gunshots echoed through the ventilation shafts like dull thunderclaps. Dante was still fighting.
Isabella pushed herself up from the floor. She couldn't afford to be weak. For eighteen months, she had been treated as an invisible shadow in this house—a nobody meant to take the blame for a corporate execution. But Dante Moretti had looked at her like she mattered. He had stood between her and Richard Collins.
*I am not going to let him die in this house,* she thought fiercely.
Instead of running toward the emergency bunker to save herself, Isabella moved silently across the dark commercial kitchen toward the walk-in refrigeration units. Beside the meat lockers was the central electrical switchboard that powered the domestic wings.
When she had worked sanitation duty, she had befriended old Mr. Henderson, the estate's chief engineer, before Victoria had fired him six months ago. Henderson had shown her how the mansion’s nineteenth-century industrial architecture still relied on a set of backup manual generator throws located behind the cold-storage condenser units—throws that were entirely disconnected from the digital grid Richard Collins had hacked.
Navigating by touch through the pitch-black basement, Isabella reached the heavy cast-iron lever marked: *EMERGENCY DELUGE & FLOODLIGHT BANKS - MANUAL OVERRIDE.*
It was rusted tight. She threw her entire weight onto the bar, grunting with exertion. Her bleeding palms slipped on the cold metal. "Come on!" she sobbed, digging her heels into the grease-slick tile. "Move!"
With a resounding *CLANG*, the mechanical contacts slammed into place.
Deep in the subterranean bowels of the estate, four massive auxiliary diesel generators roared to life with a deafening, earth-shaking rumble.
Instantly, three hundred thousand lumens of high-intensity commercial security floodlights exploded across the entire exterior and interior of the Moretti estate. The grand ballrooms, the corridors, the stairwells, and the glass solarium were instantly flooded with blinding, searing white light.
From the floors above, startled curses and screams of temporary blindness echoed down the stairwells.
Isabella grabbed a heavy, two-foot-long iron meat tenderizer from the butcher's block and sprinted toward the basement vault stairs. She knew Richard Collins was locked in the holding room below the grand hall. And she knew that if the mercenaries had breached the estate, Richard’s first move would be to retrieve the master offshore cipher key hidden inside his personal briefcase in the vault.
