Chapter 2 - The Whispering Gallery

The encrypted screen flickered to life, bathing the dim library in a cold, blue luminescence. Lines of crimson code scrolled downward at staggering speeds, demanding a three-tier biometric decryption key. Dante placed his thumb against the terminal scanner. A soft tone chimed, followed by a harsh red prompt flashing across the glass:

`ACCESS DENIED: SECONDARY AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED. DNA PROFILE MISMATCH.`

Dante frowned, his brows drawing together. "Impossible. Julian and I shared full genetic security access on all Moretti family archives. If my thumbprint doesn't bypass the protocol, Julian didn't configure this for the family."

Isabella stepped forward instinctively, her eyes darting across the alphanumeric sequence mirrored in the dark wood. "Look at the prompt header, Mr. Moretti. It's not asking for a blood relative."

Dante glanced at her sharply. "What do you mean?"

"The secondary prompt uses the prefix 'V-7'. When I worked in estate cataloging for the historical district before coming here, older Chicago merchant families used serial prefixes for corporate trusts. 'V' didn't stand for kin. It stood for the Vanguard Foundation."

Dante froze. The air seemed to leave his lungs in a single, painful exhalation. "The Vanguard Foundation was my late wife’s private charitable trust. Elena dissolved it three months before she was killed in the identical car crash that took Julian."

The room plunged into an eerie silence. The ticking of the antique grandfather clock in the corner sounded like a firing squad loading their rifles. Elena Moretti had died in what the authorities had called a catastrophic brake failure on the icy roads of Lake Forest five years ago. Dante had spent half a decade drinking himself to the brink of madness, blaming his own neglect, while rebuilding his empire into an impenetrable fortress of isolation.

"Elena didn't dissolve that foundation," Dante murmured, his voice cracking with a raw, long-buried agony. "She was forced to transfer it. And Richard Collins was the sole executor who handled the transition paperwork."

He looked at the keypad, his fingers hovering over the keys. Instead of his corporate master key, he typed an eight-digit sequence: the exact date Elena had first agreed to marry him on the shores of Lake Como.

The terminal flashed amber. A low hum resonated from the desktop speakers, followed by a soft, mechanical click.

`AUTHORIZATION CONFIRMED. WELCOME, ARCHIVIST.`

The screen unfolded into a labyrinth of financial spreadsheets, audio surveillance logs, and hidden offshore transactions dating back six years. At the top of the directory sat a single high-definition video file labeled: *INSIDE_HOUSE_INSURANCE.mp4*.

Dante clicked the file.

The screen bloomed with footage captured from a high-angle pinhole camera—positioned inside this very library, looking directly toward the safe behind the oil painting of Dante’s great-grandfather. On screen, a man with silver hair and tailored wool trousers was turning the brass dial of the safe with practiced ease: Richard Collins.

Beside him stood Victoria Gable, holding a stack of blue carbon transfer papers.

"Are you sure the digital clone took?" Victoria’s voice came through the high-grade speakers, crisp, venomous, and entirely devoid of the prim, polite cadence she used with the household staff.

"Dante suspects nothing," Richard’s recorded voice replied with chilling nonchalance. "He still thinks Elena drove off that embankment because she was weeping over Julian’s gambling debts. He has no idea Julian was tracing the missing eighty million from the shipping logistics arm straight to my accounts in the Caymans."

"And the girl? The new housekeeper he hired last year?" Victoria asked on the recording.

"Isabella?" Richard chuckled coldly on screen. "A stray from the North Side foster system. No family, no connections, no one to notice if she vanishes. If Dante starts auditing the domestic payroll accounts, we drop the bearer bonds into her locker, plant the cash in her trunk, and let the Chicago police take her down for grand larceny. She’s our perfect shield."

Isabella covered her mouth with trembling fingers, a wave of cold nausea washing through her stomach. She had spent eighteen months scrubbing floors, dusting priceless heirlooms, and keeping her head down, completely unaware that she had been selected as a sacrificial lamb before she had even set foot inside the front portico.

Dante did not scream. He did not punch the wall. Instead, a terrifying, absolute calmness washed over his features. The wild rage that had possessed him on the grand staircase was gone, replaced by the lethal, calculating instinct that had earned him the title of 'The Black Duke' in the Chicago financial markets.

"They did not merely plan to steal from me," Dante whispered, his voice smooth as silk and cold as grave dirt. "They murdered my wife. They murdered my brother. And they dared to make you their scapegoat under my own roof."

He closed the terminal laptop with a soft, definitive snap, and picked up the obsidian drive, placing it securely inside his inner coat pocket.

"Isabella," Dante said softly, turning to her.

"Yes, Mr. Moretti?"

"Your employment as a housekeeper is terminated immediately."

Isabella felt her heart drop into her stomach. "Mr. Moretti, please—"

May you like

"From this second forward, you are the chief witness and personal ward of the Moretti estate," Dante interrupted, his dark eyes boring into hers with unbreakable resolve. "You will walk beside me down that staircase. You will hold your head high. And you will watch how a Moretti handles monsters."
