Chapter 7 - Shadows of the Past

The digital clock on Rachel’s desk read 11:45 PM.

The vast glass tower was empty, shrouded in the quiet hush of midnight. Outside, a fresh blizzard was sweeping across Chicago, coating the skyscrapers in layers of blinding white.

Rachel’s eyes burned from staring at the glowing monitors, but she couldn't stop. The puzzle pieces were falling into place with terrifying speed.

The Apex Freight contract was not merely an embezzlement scheme; it was a ghost pipeline. Over the past six months, hundreds of shipping containers listed as "empty industrial machinery" were being routed through the Port of Chicago and transferred to Apex trucks without undergoing federal customs scans. Martin Hayes had been clearing the electronic manifests from his terminal on the 14th floor, while Julian Vance provided executive cover from the boardroom.

The delivery truck that struck Damian hadn't just accidentally lost control on the black ice. It had been staged. Damian had been walking toward a confidential meeting with federal investigators at the Dirksen Federal Building two blocks away—a meeting only three people in the company knew about.

A soft knock at her office door shattered her concentration.

Rachel jumped, her hand instinctively hovering over the desk phone.

The biometric glass unlocked with a quiet chime, and Damian Cole stepped inside. He had discarded his suit jacket and tie, wearing a charcoal dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms, revealing strong, corded forearms and a silver watch. His hair was slightly disheveled, and the sterile bandage on his temple was slightly frayed at the edges. He looked exhausted, yet there was a dangerous, coiled intensity in his posture.

In his hand, he held two paper cups of coffee.

"Working late, Director Bennett?" Damian asked, a faint, tired smile playing on his lips as he set one of the cups on her desk. "I thought I instructed you to go home to your new apartment in the Gold Coast."

"I couldn't sleep," Rachel said, accepting the coffee. The heat seeped into her cold fingers. "Not while this was sitting on my screen."

Damian walked around her desk, leaning in close to look at the monitors. His presence was overwhelming—the heat radiating from his body, the subtle scent of cedar and rain, his face mere inches from hers. Rachel felt her heart flutter, but she forced her focus back to the glowing code.

"Look at this, Damian," she said, pointing to a nested logistics directory. "Apex Freight isn't just skimming profits. They’re running phantom cargo through our Great Lakes shipping corridor. Millions of dollars in untraceable shipments. And look who authorized the route diversion on Monday morning."

Damian leaned closer, his dark eyes scanning the data strings. His expression hardened into pure granite.

"Julian Vance," Damian spat, the name tasting like ash in his mouth.

"Martin Hayes was his inside man on the operations floor," Rachel explained, her voice quickening with excitement as the deduction crystallized. "Martin forged the electronic tracking manifests, and Vance ensured the board never flagged the route anomalies. But Damian... why would they try to kill you now? If they had the pipeline running smoothly, why take the massive risk of staging a vehicular homicide in broad daylight?"

Damian stood up straight, his face shadowed in the dim glow of the monitors. He walked to the panoramic window, staring out into the roaring blizzard.

"Because my father’s autopsy report arrived from Zurich three days ago," Damian revealed, his voice dropping into a register of profound, agonizing grief.

Rachel turned in her chair, stunned. "Your father? I thought he passed away from natural cardiac arrest two years ago."

"That is what the public was told," Damian whispered, his broad shoulders tensing beneath his shirt. "My father was eighty-two, but he was healthy. Vigorous. Two days before he died, he told me he had uncovered a syndicate using Cole International ships to smuggle illicit weapons and stolen corporate technology between North America and Eastern Europe. Before he could take his evidence to the Department of Justice, he suffered a sudden, fatal myocardial infarction in his penthouse."

Damian turned back to her, the raw pain in his steel-gray eyes taking Rachel’s breath away.

"I had his tissue samples sent to an independent forensic lab in Switzerland under a false identity. The results came back on Monday morning. He didn't die of a heart attack, Rachel. He was poisoned with a synthetic, untraceable potassium compound."

Rachel’s hand flew to her throat. "Oh, God, Damian..."

"I scheduled a private meeting with the United States Attorney for yesterday morning at 8:00 AM," Damian said, stepping toward her, his voice shaking with restrained fury. "The only person I informed was Vice Chairman Julian Vance, because I naively believed his family's forty-year friendship with my father was sacred. Julian realized that if I met with the feds, his entire empire would burn to the ground. So he had the truck waiting for me."

Damian stopped right beside Rachel’s chair. He looked down at her, his eyes soft with a vulnerability he showed to no one else in the world.

"If you hadn't crossed that street, Rachel... if you hadn't stayed on that frozen road and held my hand... Julian Vance would be the Chairman of Cole International right now, and my father’s murder would have been buried forever."

Rachel stood up. Without thinking about corporate etiquette, without thinking about the billions of dollars separating their social standing, she reached out and gently laid her hand against his cheek.

His skin was warm, his jawline tense. Damian leaned into her touch, his eyelids fluttering closed for a single, fleeting second, breathing in her presence as if she were the only sanctuary in a world full of assassins.

"We're going to finish this, Damian," Rachel whispered fiercely, her eyes shining in the dim light. "Tomorrow morning at the board meeting. We are going to expose them all."

Damian opened his eyes, staring deeply into hers, his hand coming up to gently cover hers where it rested on his cheek.

May you like

"Together," he promised.
