Chapter 6 - Whispers in the Glass Tower

The revelation hung in the rarefied air of the 38th floor like poison gas.

"A hit?" Rachel whispered, rising slowly from her chair, the leather creaking beneath her sudden movement. Her mind flashed back to the violent screech of tires, the truck careening across the ice, the raw violence of the collision. It hadn't been bad weather. It had been an assassination attempt.

Damian’s jaw set into stone. He didn't look shocked; his eyes darkened with a grim, chilling familiarity, as if this were an eventuality he had been anticipating for months.

"Eleanor," Damian ordered calmly. "Take Rachel to her new office on Floor 36. Have our private security detail assigned to her immediately. No one enters her suite without biometric authorization."

"Wait, Damian—Mr. Cole," Rachel protested, stepping around the desk. "If someone tried to kill you, you shouldn't be standing here unprotected! You need to be in a hospital, or in a secured location!"

Damian turned to her, his gaze intense, a dark fire dancing in the depths of his storm-gray eyes. "Whoever authorized that hit believes I am either dead or incapacitated in an ICU. My greatest weapon right now is my presence. If I retreat into the shadows, the board panics, the stock plummets, and the vultures circling this company move in for the kill."

He walked closer to her, his hand gently grasping her shoulder. The touch was steady, reassuring, sending a surge of warmth through her chest. "You saved me once, Rachel. Now, let me protect you. They know you were at the scene. Until we know who ordered this, you are in danger as well."

Before Rachel could argue, Eleanor guided her out of the penthouse suite and down the private elevator to Floor 36—the newly renovated executive tier.

Within two hours, news of the seismic shake-up had ripped through Cole International like a wildfire.

The gossip on the corporate intranet was deafening. *Martin Hayes marched out in handcuffs! Rachel Bennett—the quiet, overlooked logistics analyst from the 14th floor—appointed Director of Global Supply Strategy overnight!* Whispers echoed through the gleaming glass corridors. Some claimed she was the CEO’s secret mistress; others whispered that she possessed black-market blackmail on the board. The corporate hive mind, unable to comprehend raw merit and selfless courage, manufactured scandal to cope with her meteoric rise.

Rachel sat behind her new expansive desk of smoked glass, looking out over the Chicago river. Two armed private security contractors in discreet gray suits stood stationed outside her double glass doors.

Her computer terminal was loaded with high-clearance executive files. She didn't waste time luxuriating in her newfound wealth. If someone was trying to kill Damian Cole, and if that someone was tied to the logistics infrastructure, the answers would be buried in the numbers. Rachel knew data. Data didn't lie, data didn't take bribes, and data always left a trail of breadcrumbs.

She began cross-referencing the delivery truck's registration with Cole International's subcontractor databases. The vehicle belonged to *Apex Freight Solutions*, a third-party regional carrier contracted six months ago to handle overflow cargo from the Chicago rail yards.

As Rachel dug deeper into the manifests, something felt deeply wrong.

"This doesn't make sense," she murmured to herself, tapping her keyboard rapidly.

Apex Freight had been awarded a ninety-million-dollar exclusive contract without going through the standard competitive bidding process. The approval signatures on the routing authorizations were completely bypassed.

Suddenly, her office phone rang.

She picked it up. "Director Bennett."

"Ms. Bennett," a smooth, cultured voice purred over the line. "Allow me to congratulate you on your... astonishing promotion."

The voice belonged to Julian Vance—no relation to Eleanor, but rather the Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors and the second-largest shareholder behind Damian Cole. Julian was an old-money aristocrat whose family had controlled Chicago shipping for three generations before Damian’s father bought them out.

"Thank you, Mr. Vance," Rachel said cautiously, keeping her tone strictly professional. "How can I help you?"

"I understand that despite your lack of executive tenure, Mr. Cole has granted you unilateral oversight of our North American routing networks," Julian said, his voice laced with thinly veiled contempt. "There is an emergency Board of Directors meeting scheduled for tomorrow morning at 8:00 AM to address the Chairman's recent... mental fitness... following his traumatic head injury. As Director of Strategy, you will be required to present the Q4 operational stability report."

Rachel’s eyes narrowed. *Mental fitness?* They were already moving to stage a corporate coup.

"I will have the report finalized, Mr. Vance," Rachel replied coldly.

"Splendid," Julian murmured. "Oh, and Rachel? A word of friendly advice. Floor 36 is very high up. The wind is fierce, and the glass is fragile. Be careful which files you open. You might find something that causes you to lose your footing entirely."

The line went dead.

A cold chill slithered down Rachel's spine. Julian Vance hadn't called to congratulate her. He had called to threaten her.

She looked back at her monitor, pulling up the contract authorization for Apex Freight Solutions. Her heart skipped a beat as she decrypted the executive sign-off signature at the bottom of the ninety-million-dollar deal.

The signature was Martin Hayes.

And the secondary board member who had personally co-signed the authorization was none other than Vice Chairman Julian Vance.
