Chapter 9 - The Midnight Angel

The grandfather clock in the library chimed.

*One. Two. Three. Four...*

The deep, resonant chimes echoed through the great hall, marking the arrival of midnight. Christmas Eve had passed. Christmas morning had arrived.

The blizzard outside had finally subsided, leaving behind a pristine, untouched world of white velvet beneath a canopy of piercing, crystalline mountain stars. The moonlight poured through the towering windows, illuminating the great hall in a silver glow that blended seamlessly with the amber light of the tree.

Richard, Evelyn, and Chloe stood together before the hearth.

In Chloe’s hands, the tiny crystal angel caught the light of both the moon and the fire. It seemed to pulse with an inner life—a fragile, unbreakable beacon that had survived a violent fall, an ocean of cruelty, and the darkest night this family had ever endured.

"There is only one thing left to do," Richard whispered.

He didn't call for a ladder.

Instead, Richard stepped behind his twenty-four-year-old daughter, placed his strong, calloused hands beneath her arms, and lifted her effortlessly toward the sky, just as he had done every single Christmas Eve since she was three years old.

"Can you reach it, Chloe?" Richard asked, his voice thick with emotion.

Chloe stretched her arm upward. Her fingers held the spun-gold loop attached to the crystal angel’s halo.

Right at the very apex of the Fraser fir, upon the highest, strongest branch that pointed directly toward heaven, Chloe slipped the loop over the pine needle.

The angel settled into place.

The amber string lights reflected through the hand-blown crystal wings, projecting a constellation of shimmering, golden halos across the high ceiling of the great hall.

Richard gently set Chloe back down onto the marble floor.

He pulled her tightly against his side, wrapping his arm around her shoulders. Evelyn stepped between them, taking Richard’s left hand in hers and resting her right hand over Chloe’s knuckles.

They stood in absolute silence, three generations of Sterlings, staring up at the little angel watching over the hearth.

"Look at her," Evelyn whispered, her sharp old eyes misting with tender tears. "She’s smiling down on us."

"She never left," Richard said. For the first time in four years, the crushing, suffocating knot of grief in his chest began to loosen, dissolving into something warm, light, and boundless. "She was here the whole time."

Chloe leaned her head against her father’s shoulder, watching the golden light dance upon the stone walls.

The mansion, which for months had felt like a cold, hostile prison ruled by an imposter’s cruelty, was finally warm again. The scent of poison, deceit, and vanity had been burned away by the simple, enduring perfume of cinnamon, pine, and truth.

"Merry Christmas, Mom," Chloe whispered into the quiet room.

And high atop the wild, scarred Fraser fir, the little crystal angel gleamed, watching over the hearth, ensuring that the Sterling house would never, ever grow cold again.
