Chapter 4 - The Rat in the Study

Upstairs in the west wing, the silence was shattered by the sound of frantically dragged luggage.
Vanessa was tearing through the walk-in closet of the master bedroom like a rabid animal. Hermès Birkin bags were tossed indiscriminately across the plush white carpet. Velvet jewelry boxes were pried open, diamonds, emeralds, and platinum necklaces shoved violently into a black leather duffel bag.
Her phone was pressed between her ear and her shoulder, her voice shrill and breathy.
"Julian! Pick up the damn phone, you idiot!" she hissed into the receiver.
The line finally clicked. Julian Ross’s refined, upper-crust voice came through, but it was frayed at the edges with sudden panic. *"Vanessa? What the hell is going on? The secondary authentication key for the legacy trust failed! The screen just flashed an audit lock code!"*
"The old bitch knew!" Vanessa screamed, tossing a four-carat diamond ring into the duffel. "They have video! Chloe recorded the entire thing! Richard knows about the nightcaps! He knows about the dosage! He’s locked the house down! Marcus and the security team are outside my door!"
A heavy pause hung on the line, followed by the sound of rapid papers shuffling. *"Did you say Richard knows about the medication?"*
"Yes, you fool! Everything is blown!" Vanessa spat, zipping the duffel with savage force. "The police are coming! Where are you?!"
*"I’m at the Centennial private airfield,"* Julian said, his voice dropping into a cold, transactional register. *"The Gulfstream is fueled. I’m scheduled for takeoff to Panama in twenty-five minutes."*
"You can't leave without me!" Vanessa shrieked, her eyes bulging in terror. "You send a car to the service gate! Marcus has locked the front, but the subterranean wine tunnel leads out to the eastern cliff path! I can get out through the maintenance hatch! Julian, if you leave me here, I swear to God I will give the FBI your name, your offshore account numbers, and the medical records from Miami! I will drag you straight to federal prison with me!"
Silence stretched over the phone line. When Julian spoke again, his voice was chillingly smooth.
*"Calm down, Vanessa. Grab the bearer bonds from the study wall safe. The ones Eleanor stashed before she went into hospice. There’s six million in negotiable paper there. Take the wine tunnel. I will have a black SUV waiting at the eastern access road in fifteen minutes. But you must hurry."*
"I’m leaving now," Vanessa panted.
She slammed the phone shut, grabbed the heavy duffel bag of stolen jewelry, and pulled a small, pearl-handled .22 caliber revolver from her vanity drawer. She had bought it under a false name two years ago. She had hoped she would never need to use it—that Richard would simply die quietly in his sleep like Eleanor—but survival trumped elegance.
She cracked open the bedroom door.
The hallway was dimly lit by emergency sconces. Down at the far end of the corridor, near the grand staircase, one of the private security guards was standing watch, his back turned as he spoke into his radio.
Vanessa slipped off her high heels, carrying the duffel in one hand and the gun hidden beneath her velvet coat. Like a phantom, she moved silently down the rear service corridor, toward Richard’s private study.
The bearer bonds were in the study’s floor safe beneath the Persian rug. With six million in untraceable bonds and the jewels, she could survive anywhere in South America. She didn't need Julian. Once she reached Panama, she would cut him loose too.
She pushed open the heavy mahogany door to the study.
The room was dark, save for the pale moonlight reflecting off the falling snow outside the bay windows. Vanessa rushed toward the desk, kicking the heavy rug aside to expose the brass dial of the safe.
She dropped to her knees, setting the gun on the floor beside her, her fingers flying over the tumbler.
*Left to 42. Right to 18. Left to 99.*
The lock clicked. She pulled the heavy steel handle upward.
Empty.
There were no bearer bonds. No stacks of cash.
Instead, resting in the center of the dark velvet interior, was a single, framed photograph: Eleanor Sterling, radiant and smiling, holding a five-year-old Chloe in a field of summer sunflowers.
Vanessa froze, the breath catching in her throat.
"Looking for this?"
A soft click echoed in the darkness, and the brass desk lamp flared to life.
Richard Sterling was sitting in the high-backed leather chair behind the desk. In his right hand, he held the thick envelope of bearer bonds. His eyes were completely hollow, bloodshot with an ocean of agony, but his posture was that of an executioner.
Standing in the shadows behind him, her arms folded across her chest, was Chloe.
Vanessa’s heart stopped. Her gaze darted desperately to the floor, toward the revolver resting beside her knee.

"I wouldn't touch that, Vanessa," Chloe said softly, stepping into the circle of lamplight. In Chloe’s hand was not a weapon, but the tiny crystal angel, its sharp wings catching the amber glow of the desk lamp. "You’ve done enough damage for one lifetime."
