Chapter 5 - The Cornered Predator

Vanessa did not listen.

Desperation is a venom that drives rats to leap into the fire. With a savage screech, she dove across the floor, her manicured fingers clawing for the handle of the .22 revolver.

Before her nails could graze the steel, the heavy heel of Richard’s boot slammed down onto her hand, pinning her fingers against the hardwood floor.

Vanessa shrieked in genuine agony as the bones in her fingers groaned beneath his weight. Richard bent down, casually picked up the small revolver, ejected the magazine with a practiced flick of his thumb, pulled the slide back to clear the chambered round, and tossed the disassembled pieces into the roaring fireplace across the room.

He released his foot. Vanessa collapsed onto her side, clutching her bruised, throbbing hand against her ribs, panting like a cornered wolf.

"You’re a barbarian," she hissed, spit flying from her painted lips. "You think you’re a gentleman, Richard? You’re a pathetic, sentimental old fool! Eleanor pitied you! Did she ever tell you that? In the hospital, when she could barely breathe, she looked at you with disgust! She knew you were weak!"

Richard didn't flinch. The words, designed to inflict maximum psychological torture, hit him like water against granite. The veil had been torn away. He was no longer looking at his wife; he was looking at an infection that had infested his home.

"Eleanor loved me with every beat of her failing heart," Richard said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "And she loved our daughter. You could never understand that kind of love, Vanessa. You only understand the price of things. Never their value."

He tossed the envelope of bearer bonds onto the desk.

"Julian isn't waiting for you at the eastern access road," Richard continued smoothly, leaning forward and resting his elbows on the desk.

Vanessa’s eyes widened in sheer panic. "What?"

"Did you really think Marcus’s men were the only security I employ?" Richard smiled—a cold, terrifying baring of teeth. "The moment Chloe played that video, my corporate security team tapped your cellular traffic. We intercepted Julian’s call. We heard him tell you about the airstrip."

Richard checked the gold Patek Philippe watch on his wrist.

"Right now, Dr. Julian Ross is not boarding a Gulfstream to Panama. He was intercepted on the tarmac at Centennial Airport ten minutes ago by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. They found three falsified passports, four million dollars in cashiers' checks, and enough Compound 84-D in his medical bag to put him on death row in three different states."

Vanessa’s jaw trembled. The color completely drained from her lips, leaving them a grotesque, grayish purple. "No... no, Julian wouldn't... he promised me—"

"Julian offered to testify against you before the handcuffs were even fully ratcheted onto his wrists," Richard said flatly. "He told the federal agents that the entire scheme—from targeting Eleanor’s hospice team to the slow poisoning of my scotch—was conceived, financed, and directed by you. He called you a sociopath, Vanessa. He gave them the encrypted keys to your shared server in the Caymans."

"He’s lying!" Vanessa screamed, scrambling to her knees, looking wildly between Richard and Chloe. "He’s framing me! He was the doctor! He administered the drugs! I was just a victim! Richard, please! You loved me! You held me in this very room! Think of our wedding day in Tuscany! You cried when you saw me in that white dress!"

"I cried because I thought God had given me a second chance at grace," Richard said, a single tear finally escaping his eye and tracing down the hard contour of his cheek. "Now I know that the devil doesn't come with horns and a pitchfork. She comes in a designer gown, carrying a glass of poisoned whiskey."

Footsteps echoed in the corridor outside.

Marcus stepped into the study, flanked by four uniformed Colorado State Police troopers and two plainclothes FBI agents, their badges glinting under the chandelier light.

"Richard Sterling?" the lead FBI agent asked, stepping forward.

"I am Richard Sterling," he replied, standing up to his full height. "And this is Vanessa Vance. She is trespassing on private property, and you will find an active federal warrant for her arrest under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, alongside premeditated attempted murder."

The two state troopers stepped forward, pulling heavy steel handcuffs from their utility belts.

"Vanessa Vance, you are under arrest," the trooper recited, his voice monotone and unyielding. "You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law..."

As the cold steel snapped around Vanessa’s wrists, she didn't weep. The panic transformed into pure, unadulterated venom. She twisted her head, glaring at Chloe with demonic hatred.

"You think you’ve won, you little bitch?!" Vanessa screamed, thrashing against the troopers' grip. "You’ll spend the rest of your life looking over your shoulder! Your mother died choking on her own blood, and you will die alone!"

Chloe stepped forward until she was inches away from Vanessa’s snarling face.

Slowly, deliberately, Chloe raised the hand holding the crystal angel. The delicate, spun-glass figure caught the light, gleaming with an ethereal, blinding brilliance.

"My mother lives in every single breath I take," Chloe whispered softly, her eyes filled with absolute peace. "She lives in every kind word my father speaks. She lives in the love that binds this family together. But you, Vanessa... tomorrow morning, when the sun rises over Aspen, you will be nothing more than a number in an orange jumpsuit. Forgotten. Erased. Dead to the world."

Chloe turned her back on her.

"Take her out of my mother's house," Chloe said.
