Chapter 9 - Bloodlines Torn Asunder

The gala progressed with the suffocating tension of an armed truce. While the string quartet played classical waltzes, every boss in the room lined up like supplicants at a royal court to kiss Emily’s ring and offer their renewed fealty to Vincent.

At 10:15 PM, Vincent led Emily out onto the grand terrace overlooking Lake Michigan. The freezing night air was crisp, carrying the scent of snow and ozone. Chicago’s skyline sparkled before them like a mountain of diamonds against the dark abyss of the lake.

Luca stood discreetly at the terrace entrance, his hand inside his coat, ensuring absolute privacy.

Vincent shrugged off his heavy cashmere overcoat and gently draped it over Emily’s bare shoulders, protecting her from the bitter wind.

“You held court like an empress tonight,” Vincent murmured, stepping beside her to lean against the stone balustrade.

Emily looked out over the glittering expanse of the city below. One week ago, she had been a battered, bleeding maid cornered against a stainless-steel table, fighting for her life with a copper frying pan. Tonight, the very men who ruled the Midwest cowered at her glance.

“They’re terrified of you, Vincent,” she said quietly.

“No, Emily,” Vincent corrected her, turning his gaze toward her profile, his eyes softer than they had ever been in his entire life. “They were terrified of me yesterday. Tonight, they are terrified of *you*.”

She touched the black diamonds at her throat. “Why did you give me this necklace, Vincent? You could have given me ten million dollars and a one-way ticket to Paris. You could have washed your hands of the entire affair.”

Vincent stepped closer, his broad frame shielding her from the lake breeze. He reached out, his warm, calloused fingers gently tilting her chin upward so she had no choice but to look into the depths of his soul.

“When I walked down into that basement at three in the morning,” Vincent said, his voice dropping into a low, husky whisper that vibrated through her core, “I saw a woman who possessed more courage, more fire, and more honor than every man who shares my last name combined. You didn't break. You didn't grovel. You stood your ground against an animal twice your size, and you pointed the finger at your abuser without flinching.”

His thumb brushed softly across the faint, fading purple shadow on her cheekbone.

“I have spent my entire life surrounded by parasites, Emily. People who loved my money, feared my gun, or plotted to stick a knife between my ribs. You are the only person who ever looked me in the eye and told me the truth.”

Emily felt her breath hitch in her throat. The heat radiating from his body in the freezing night air was intoxicating. For years, she had lived inside a fortress of ice, driven solely by revenge, believing that survival meant feeling nothing. But standing here, enveloped in his coat, looking into the eyes of the man who had torn his own family apart to avenge her honor, the ice around her heart completely shattered.

“I was terrified, Vincent,” she confessed in a whisper. “When Marcus hit me… I thought nobody was coming. I thought I was going to die alone on that floor.”

“Nobody will ever lay a hand on you again,” Vincent vowed, his voice carrying the finality of an oath carved into bedrock. “Not in this house. Not in this city. If the sky falls, I will hold it up until you walk free.”

He leaned down slowly, giving her every opportunity to pull away.

Emily didn't pull away.

She rose on her tiptoes, her hands sliding up the broad lapels of his tuxedo, her fingers tangling into the silk of his tie.

When their lips met, the cold Chicago night vanished.

The kiss was fierce, possessive, yet filled with a desperate, tender hunger born of blood, survival, and an unspoken, unbreakable bond. Vincent’s arms locked around her waist, lifting her slightly off the stone terrace, pulling her so tight against his chest that she could feel the heavy, thunderous beat of his heart against her ribs.

When they finally broke apart, both breathless, their foreheads rested against one another in the dark.

“So,” Emily whispered, a breathtaking, wicked smile touching her lips for the first time. “What does the Donna of Chicago do on her first night in power?”

Vincent chuckled—a deep, rich sound that seemed to surprise even him.

May you like

“Whatever she damn well pleases,” Vincent replied.
