Chapter 4 - The Viper in Cashmere

The grand dining hall of the Moretti estate was designed to evoke the intimidating splendor of a Renaissance palazzo. Soaring twenty-foot ceilings supported heavy crystal chandeliers that cast a shimmering, icy radiance over a twenty-seat mahogany banquet table. Great oil paintings of long-dead Moretti patriarchs glared down from the walls, their expressions severe, unforgiving, and steeped in blood.

It was 4:45 AM. Outside, the pre-dawn mist was rolling in thick and grey off the surface of Lake Michigan, shrouding the surrounding pine forests in an impenetrable wall of white.

Sophia Vance sat at the far end of the banquet table, sipping an espresso from an antique porcelain cup. She had changed out of her dressing gown into an immaculate, cream-colored cashmere sweater and tailored trousers. Her makeup was applied with military precision, completely masking whatever internal panic was clawing at her ribs.

Dominic paced along the Persian rug, his hands jammed into his pockets, chewing the inside of his cheek until he tasted copper.

“He knows, Sophia,” Dominic hissed under his breath, leaning over her chair. “Look at the monitors! Luca locked down the gates. The courtyard guards are being rotated out. Vincent isn't an idiot. If that little bitch talks—”

“Shut up, Dominic,” Sophia snapped in a venomous, cultured whisper, not even looking at him. “Keep your voice down. Marcus will hold his tongue. He knows what my family will do to his sister in Boca if he breathes a word.”

“Marcus is strapped to a meat hook in the basement!” Dominic fired back, his pupils dilated, his skin slick with sweat. “You don't know Vincent like I do! When he gets that quiet look… that dead, calm look… that’s when he’s calculating how many bullets it takes to clear the room!”

“Vincent loves me,” Sophia said coldly, adjusting the ten-carat diamond on her finger. “He needs my father’s political connections to launder the docklands expansion. He won't touch me over a bruised housemaid. We stick to the story: the girl was stealing silver, Marcus caught her, she got violent, Marcus defended himself. At six o’clock, Alexei’s men will breach the eastern perimeter anyway. By sunrise, Vincent’s reign is over, and you and I will run this syndicate together.”

“Are you sure Alexei is coming?” Dominic pressed, his fingers trembling.

“The Bratva are already staged at the marina,” Sophia smiled, a cold, predatory curve of her scarlet lips. “They have heavy artillery. Vincent’s loyalists won't stand a chance.”

The heavy double doors of the dining hall swung open with a resounding thud.

Dominic jumped half a foot in the air, his hand instinctively snapping toward his waist.

Vincent stepped into the room.

He was impeccably dressed in a bespoke charcoal three-piece suit, his tie knotted with surgical precision. There was no weapon visible on his person, no sign of agitation, no blood on his cuffs. He looked like an emperor arriving to inspect a conquered province.

Behind him walked Emily.

Dominic gasped, his eyes bulging.

Emily was no longer wearing the tattered grey uniform of a servant. She was draped in a tailored black wool coat belonging to Vincent, buttoned high to conceal her bruised collarbone. Her face was battered, her lip swollen, her left cheek painted in violent shades of violet and crimson, but she walked with her spine straight, her chin held high, her eyes fixed like laser sights on Sophia.

Vincent pulled out the heavy master armchair at the head of the table and, in a gesture that sent a jolt of pure horror through Sophia’s spine, pulled out the chair directly to his right.

“Sit, Emily,” Vincent said softly.

Emily walked forward, the click of her boots echoing like hammer strikes on a coffin lid. She sat down, folding her hands neatly on the polished mahogany table, staring directly across the expanse at Sophia Vance.

Sophia’s teacup clattered against its saucer.

“Vincent, darling…” Sophia began, forcing an airy, affectionate laugh that rang hollow in the cavernous room. “What is the meaning of this? Why is the help sitting at the family table? And why is this… this criminal still in the house? Dominic told me she was caught stealing from the private study!”

Vincent sat down at the head of the table. He did not pour coffee. He did not smile. He steepled his long fingers together, his grey eyes settling upon Sophia with the weight of a falling guillotine.

“Dominic told you that?” Vincent asked pleasantly.

Dominic swallowed, stepping backward toward the large bay windows. “Yeah! That’s right, Vince! Marcus caught her red-handed trying to lift antique jewelry from the safe! Marcus got rough because she pulled a knife on him! The girl is unstable!”

Vincent reached into his breast pocket. He withdrew the small titanium USB drive and placed it gently in the exact center of the table.

The silence that followed was so absolute that the hum of the refrigerator in the distant scullery could be heard.

Dominic’s breath hitched. Sophia’s manicured fingers froze against the porcelain cup.

“This drive,” Vincent said smoothly, his voice dropping into that chilling, hypnotic cadence, “does not contain jewelry. It contains twenty-four gigabytes of encrypted communications. It contains banking records from the Cayman Islands. And it contains a very interesting contract signed between the Vance Family Trust, Dominic Moretti, and a certain Alexei Volkov of the Bratva.”

Dominic turned white as a sheet. “Vince… listen to me—”

“Do you know what else it contains, Dominic?” Vincent continued, not even looking at his brother. His gaze remained entirely fixed on his fiancé. “It contains the security bypass codes for the eastern estate gates. Codes that were scheduled to deactivate the electric perimeter at precisely 5:15 AM.”

Vincent glanced down at his platinum wristwatch.

“It is currently 5:12 AM.”

Sophia’s elegant facade completely disintegrated. The aristocratic heiress vanished, replaced by a snarling, cornered viper. She pushed her chair back, standing up with sudden violence.

“You arrogant bastard!” Sophia hissed, her voice stripping away every shred of charm. “You think you own this city? You’re a glorified street thug in a custom suit! My family built Chicago! The Commission is sick of your absolute control, your moralistic rules about narcotics and human trafficking! Alexei is going to tear this mansion to pieces, and there is nothing you can do to stop it!”

She looked at Emily, her eyes burning with pure malice. “And as for you, you pathetic little gutter rat… I should have told Marcus to slit your throat in the hallway!”

Emily did not flinch. She leaned forward, resting her bruised hands flat on the mahogany table.

“Marcus couldn't even handle a girl with a frying pan,” Emily said, her voice clear, steady, and dripping with venom. “How do you think he’s going to handle what Vincent has waiting for your friends outside?”

Before Sophia could process the words, Vincent reached down beneath the edge of the table and pressed a recessed red button.

Instantly, heavy steel blast shutters dropped over every window in the dining hall with a deafening, metallic crash, sealing the room from the outside world.

From the grounds outside, the muffled, thunderous roar of automatic rifle fire and exploding perimeter mines began to tear the morning silence to shreds.
