Chapter 9 - Bloodlines at Midnight

The night, however, was not finished collecting its toll.

The convoy returned to the Long Island estate under a torrential downpour. Thunder rattled the reinforced glass of the master bedroom, flashing pale blue across the walls like battlefield artillery.

Inside the compound, Mateo was asleep in the center of the massive four-poster bed, guarded by two loyal female bodyguards. Isabella sat on the edge of the mattress, running her fingers through her son's curls, her emerald gown replaced by a soft black cashmere robe.

Suddenly, the lights flickered once. Twice. Then plunged into absolute darkness.

The heavy thrum of the estate’s backup industrial generators kicked in three seconds later, bathing the corridors in low, crimson emergency illumination.

An alarm klaxon began to howl.

*BREACH. SECTOR FOUR. MAIN PERIMETER DOWN.*

Isabella stood up instantly, her maternal instincts overriding every shred of lingering trauma. She reached under the mattress and pulled out the Kimber 1911 Vincent had given her that afternoon. She racked the slide with a smooth, practiced click.

The bedroom door opened. Vincent stepped inside, carrying a customized short-barrel assault rifle, his tactical vest strapped tight over his dress shirt.

"Moretti?" Isabella asked, her voice steady, cold, ready for war.

"Moretti and the remnants of Vance's private military contractors," Vincent said, his jaw tight. "They knew they were dead men walking after the gala. They decided to gamble everything on a final, desperate decapitation strike."

"How many?"

"Thirty men breached the outer perimeter through the sea wall. Marcus is holding the foyer, but they have heavy ordnance."

Vincent looked down at his son, sleeping soundly beneath the sound-dampening panels of the reinforced master suite, then turned back to his wife. For a split second, he expected to see the terrified, broken girl from the basement.

Instead, Isabella walked over to the gun rack hidden behind the armoire. She pulled down a tactical magazine, slapped it into her sidearm, and looked up at him.

"Marcus can't hold the grand staircase alone," Isabella said. "The service passages behind the library lead directly to the foyer balcony. We can flank them."

Vincent stared at her, a fierce, savage pride igniting in his chest. "You are an absolute demon, Mrs. Calder."

"I am a mother who will never let anyone threaten her child again," she corrected, stepping past him into the red-lit hallway. "Let’s finish this."

They moved through the mansion like two wraiths forged in the fires of hell.

Down in the grand foyer, the scene was carnage. Heavy gunfire ripped through the priceless marble statues, splintering mahogany balustrades and shattering antique crystal chandeliers. Marcus and four Calder soldiers were pinned behind the overturned dining room table, trading suppressed automatic fire with a dozen heavily armored mercenaries pushing through the shattered front doors.

"PUSH FORWARD!" a mercenary commander roared over the thunder. "VANCE PAYS FIFTY MILLION FOR THE WOMAN AND THE BOY! LEAVE NO ONE ALIVE!"

From the shadows of the second-floor mezzanine, high above the attackers, two figures stepped into the red emergency light.

"You're not collecting that bounty," a voice rang out from above.

The mercenary leader looked up, but it was already too late.

Vincent opened fire with surgical, terrifying precision. High-velocity rounds tore through the mercenaries' frontline with rhythmic, unyielding destruction. At his side, Isabella fired her Kimber with cool, deliberate accuracy, dropping two men attempting to flank Marcus’s position from the east corridor.

She did not flinch at the sound of the gunshots. She did not close her eyes against the smoke and the flashes of powder. She stood shoulder-to-shoulder with the king of the underworld, reclaiming her stolen life one bullet at a time.

Within ninety seconds, the grand foyer fell into a horrific, smoking silence.

The mercenaries lay broken across the blood-soaked marble. The surviving commander, dragging a shattered leg, crawled desperately toward the open front doors, clawing his way through the rain-slick portico.

A polished black boot stepped down onto the center of his back, pinning him to the stone.

The commander groaned, looking up into the freezing rain.

Isabella Calder stood over him, the Kimber pointed steadily between his eyes. The wind whipped her dark hair around her pale face, her cashmere robe soaked with rain, looking like the grim reaper incarnate.

"Who sent you?" Isabella asked softly.

"Moretti..." the man gasped, spitting blood onto the stone. "Moretti paid us... he said you were weak... he said you were just a broken maid..."

Isabella lowered the barrel of her weapon until the cold steel pressed against the bridge of his nose.

"Tell Moretti that the maid has taken his throne," she whispered.

May you like

She pulled the trigger.
