Chapter 7 - Desperation Breeds Monsters

Victoria Sterling watched her uncle collapse.

The last pillar of her reality had crumbled into ash. There were no more bank accounts. There were no more political favors. There was no more family protection. There was only the freezing, unforgiving marble floor, the sharp bite of broken glass beneath her skin, and the looming shadows of the people she had treated like dirt.

She looked up at Alexander Vance.

He stood over her, his silhouette framed by the blinding glow of the shattered chandeliers. He looked less like a man and more like an ancient deity of retribution who had descended to collect a debt four decades in the making.

"Please..." Victoria wept, her forehead touching his leather shoe. All her pride, all her venom, all her manicured superiority had evaporated, leaving behind a pathetic, broken shell. "Spare me. Put me in prison, take every penny, but don't let me die like this. Please, Alexander..."

Alexander looked down at her. There was no hatred in his eyes. That was the most terrifying part. There was only the clinical detachment of a surgeon cutting away a malignant tumor.

"You won't die tonight, Victoria," Alexander said quietly. "Death is far too merciful for what you have done."

He gestured slightly with his fingers.

Two of Alexander’s private operatives stepped forward. They didn't touch Victoria with anger; they hoisted her up by her arms with the emotionless efficiency of warehouse workers moving discarded freight.

Commissioner O'Malley stepped forward, his hands trembling as he pulled a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his utility belt. He looked at Alexander with pleading, desperate eyes, praying that doing his duty now would spare him from the Vance family’s wrath.

"Lord Vance... do I take her into state custody, or..."

"She belongs to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of the Treasury now," Alexander replied. "Every single asset under the Sterling name is being seized under the RICO Act. Her penthouses, her private jets, her jewelry, the very dress she is wearing—everything belongs to the victims of her family's four-decade fraud."

Alexander turned to Victoria, whose tear-stained face was blank with shock.

"You will spend the rest of your natural life in a six-by-eight cell at Danbury Federal Correctional Institution. You will wake up at 5:00 AM. You will wear a coarse orange jumpsuit. And you will spend eight hours every single day cleaning the dining halls and washing the dishes of women you once deemed beneath your notice."

A strangled, agonizing moan escaped Victoria's throat. For a woman whose entire identity was built on aesthetic perfection and unattainable wealth, Alexander’s sentence was worse than a thousand deaths.

"Take them away," Alexander commanded.

O'Malley clamped the steel cuffs around Victoria’s wrists with a definitive, brutal *click*.

As she was dragged across the shattered champagne floor, her bare, bleeding feet trailing behind her, she passed Maya Cruz.

Maya didn't mock her. She didn't smile. She simply stood at attention, her hands folded behind her back, her eyes staring straight ahead. To Maya, Victoria was already a ghost.

Richard Sterling was hauled up by two tactical officers, his broken wrist bound in medical zip-ties, his groans of pain echoing down the corridor as the police dragged both Sterlings out of the Grand Sovereign Ballroom.

The double oak doors slammed shut behind them.

Inside the ballroom, the remaining fifty high-ranking guests who had not managed to escape stood frozen against the walls. CEOs, senators, media moguls—they all watched Alexander Vance with sheer, unadulterated terror, waiting to see where the lightning would strike next.

Alexander turned his gaze toward them.

The silence was so heavy that several women began to quietly sob in fear.
