Chapter 4 - The Golden Mask Crumbles

A deathly stillness gripped the ballroom.

For a heartbeat, Victoria Sterling let out a shrill, hysterical laugh. "A margin call? On Sterling Global? You fool! We don't have leveraged debt with Zurich! Our primary creditor is an independent sovereign trust—"

She stopped.

The blood drained completely from her lips, leaving them a pale, sickly violet.

*The Aegis Syndicate.*

The thirty-billion-dollar credit facility that had allowed Sterling Global to acquire its clean-energy patents, build its fabrication plants, and buy its competitors over the past seven years. Victoria’s father had signed the papers on his deathbed, swearing that the Aegis Syndicate was a silent, benevolent trust that would never interfere so long as the company remained profitable.

On the speakerphone, the Zurich director’s voice sounded with algorithmic precision:

*"Command recognized. Aegis Syndicate Master Clause 9. Sovereign Vance possesses unilateral right of instant liquidation upon moral turpitude or breach of sovereign dignity. Calculating Sterling Global’s total outstanding exposure across London, Tokyo, and New York..."*

A brief pause, during which the only sound in the ballroom was the hyperventilating breath of Richard Sterling on the floor.

*"Total immediate debt recall: Forty-eight billion, seven hundred and twenty million dollars. Due timestamp: sixty seconds from transmission."*

"Forty-eight billion?!" Victoria screamed, lunging toward Alexander as if she could tear the phone from his hands. "You can't do that! The contract requires a thirty-day cure period! It's illegal! It's market manipulation!"

Alexander didn't even flinch as Maya stepped into Victoria’s path, her forearm a solid brick wall that stopped Victoria dead in her tracks, forcing her back into the puddle of champagne.

"Read subsection forty-two of your father's original covenant, Victoria," Alexander said, his voice as cold as the deep ocean. "In the event that any Sterling heir inflicts physical injury upon a Vance bloodline, all covenants are rendered null and void. The debt becomes instantly payable in physical gold or seized assets."

Alexander looked down at his watch.

"You have forty seconds."

Suddenly, a cacophony of digital alerts erupted across the room.

It started with a single chime from a German banker’s phone in the front row. Then another. Then five. Then fifty. Within ten seconds, all five hundred guests were frantically pulling glowing smartphones from their tuxedos and evening gowns.

"My God..." a venture capitalist gasped, his face turning ghostly white. "Look at the Frankfurt pre-market..."

"Sterling Global's European bonds... they just dropped to zero!" another yelled.

"The German exchanges just halted trading! Aegis Syndicate has locked all Sterling corporate bank accounts! The payroll funds, the operational cash, the escrow accounts—everything is frozen!"

Richard Sterling began to claw at his own chest, tearing his tuxedo shirt open as he struggled to breathe. "Victoria... what have you done?! What have you done to us?!"

"No! No! It's a bluff!" Victoria shrieked, spinning around to face the wealthy investors she had dined with just an hour ago. "Marcus! You hold twelve percent of our debt! Call your board! Don't let him do this!"

A silver-haired billionaire who had spent the evening kissing Victoria's hand took two rapid steps backward, holding his hands up as if she were carrying the bubonic plague. "Stay away from me, Victoria. My firm is executing an emergency short position. I'm severing all ties with Sterling Global tonight."

"Senator Hayes!" Victoria turned toward a distinguished-looking man in a navy suit. "You promised the Pentagon micro-grid contract was guaranteed! Tell them!"

Senator Hayes didn't even look her in the eye. He turned his back on her, speaking hurriedly into his phone: "Get the Attorney General on the line. I want all federal associations with the Sterling family scrubbed from the record before dawn."

One by one, the five hundred titans of industry, the political royalty of America, stepped back. They formed a wide, empty circle around Victoria Sterling, leaving her standing alone in her torn, soaked gown, surrounded by the debris of her broken vanity.

On the gold phone, the Zurich director spoke again:

*"Sixty seconds have elapsed. No payment received. Sovereign Vance, the liquidation protocol is complete. Sterling Global Capital is officially insolvent. Chapter 7 receivership has been filed in the Southern District of New York. As of this second, Miss Victoria Sterling possesses a net worth of negative fourteen billion dollars."*

The phone went silent.

Victoria stood frozen. Her eyes were wide, glassy, completely detached from reality. The air in her lungs felt like crushed glass. She had entered this room as the most powerful woman in the city.

In less than five minutes, she had been reduced to a bankrupt outcast.

And then, from the wheelchair behind Alexander, Eleanor Vance spoke.

"Victoria," the old woman said, her voice filled not with anger, but with an ancient, devastating sorrow. "You never wondered, did you? You never asked your father why the Aegis Syndicate gave your family forty billion dollars in the first place?"

Victoria slowly turned her head toward the wheelchair, her shattered mind struggling to grasp the question. "What...?"

May you like

"You thought you were a genius," Eleanor whispered. "You thought you were born to rule. But you are sitting in my chair, wearing my stolen crown."
