Chapter 9 - THE RING ON THE FLOOR

Rachel’s slap became a point of argument in the family.

Margaret’s relatives said:

“Rachel hit her husband in church.”

Rachel did not deny.

“I slapped him after he grabbed me again.”

Daniel did not press charges.

He told therapist:

“I was wrong to put my hands on her.”

Rachel:

“I was wrong to slap you instead of leaving.”

Both.

No romanticizing retaliation.

Margaret’s attempted strike against Rachel had witnesses.

Rachel chose not to pursue criminal charge after church security report and consultation.

She sought a civil no-contact boundary regarding Grace.

Margaret agreed through counsel rather than litigate.

No direct contact.

No church-event approach.

No gifts delivered through others without parental consent.

Daniel moved into apartment for three months.

Couples therapy.

Individual therapy.

Marriage remained uncertain.

He apologized to Helen too.

“I let Mom humiliate your daughter for years.”

Helen:

“Yes.”

No reassurance.

Daniel accepted.

Rachel returned ring only after six months? Let's say not yet.

He asked once:

“Do you want divorce?”

Rachel:

“I want proof I won’t spend next twenty years fighting your mother through you.”

Daniel:

“Then judge that by what I do.”

Good.

He maintained boundaries.

When Margaret was hospitalized briefly for high blood pressure, he visited alone.

Did not guilt Rachel.

Did not bring Grace.

When Margaret sent Grace a christening bracelet, Daniel returned.

No secret keeping.

Months later Rachel agreed to restart wearing ring, but chose same one? Maybe she had thrown but recovered. She kept it. Could rewear only after vow renewal later, not yet.

The tenth chapter would bring Anna’s letters into a different context.

Michael offered original locket to Margaret.

She accepted.

Then asked whether she could meet him.

He said not yet.

Boundaries work both ways.

Margaret experienced being told no.

That became part of her change.

The church’s incident report also recorded that Rachel had moved Grace away before any physical confrontation began. This detail mattered to Rachel later because she wanted her daughter to know that protecting the baby came before fighting with adults.

She did not want the family story reduced to a dramatic slap and a dropped ring.
