Chapter 14 - THE DRESS

Rachel kept the baptism dress in a sealed box for fifteen years.

Not because she wanted it.

Because she did not know what else to do.

The word JEZEBEL remained.

She could have burned it.

Sometimes wanted.

At Grace’s fifteenth birthday, Grace learned full baptism story.

Rachel showed photos.

Not public video—there was none.

Church incident reports.

Margaret’s apology.

Then asked:

“Do you want to see dress?”

Grace said yes.

They opened box.

Dark thread.

One word.

Grace stared.

“That was on me?”

“You never wore it after ceremony. She altered it for photos afterward.”

Important.

“Why?”

Rachel explained Anna.

Louise.

Margaret.

Projection.

Grace looked more sad than angry.

“Can we take it off?”

Rachel had never considered literal repair.

They brought dress to textile conservator.

The dark embroidery had been added superficially.

Most could be removed without destroying fabric, though small needle marks remained.

Conservator asked:

“Do you want marks hidden?”

Grace said:

“No.”

They removed word.

Tiny punctures remained.

Evidence of what happened.

Not label.

Grace chose dress not for future baptism necessarily.

She donated to church textile archive with family story? Privacy? Maybe keep family.

She kept it.

Folded.

No word.

Rachel cried.

Daniel watched.

Margaret was told later.

She said:

“Good.”

No demand to see.

At twentieth anniversary, Rachel and Daniel renewed vows privately at courthouse? Church? Could be church garden.

No need dramatic.

Daniel said:

“I promise not peace at your expense.”

Rachel laughed:

“That is weirdly specific.”

True.

The fifteenth chapter would return to Grace as adult mother perhaps. She has baby daughter and chooses baptism dress? Could be powerful but maybe repeats. Maybe Grace uses same restored dress for her daughter, but could feel burden. Better she chooses whether. Choice is point.

Let's make adult Grace has daughter Anna? Name too on nose. Maybe Leah. She considers old dress and chooses a new one, while old dress stays. Or uses a ribbon from old dress inside new one voluntarily. Nice.

Final on baptism of Grace's daughter decades later, Margaret perhaps deceased. Rachel grandmother. No insult. Family Bible with Anna restored. Good happy closure.

Removing the embroidery left tiny punctures that became an unexpectedly useful metaphor for Rachel, though she resisted saying it aloud too often. Repair did not restore untouched fabric. It removed the imposed word while leaving evidence that something had happened.

That was enough.
