Chapter 4 - THE MESSAGES RICHARD NEVER SENT

Richard had blamed adolescence.

Emily had blamed herself.

Victoria used that gap.

The family shared an Apple ID? In current 2026 maybe modern. But story unspecified contemporary. Use shared family device management.

Victoria managed household devices through a family account.

She knew Emily’s phone passcode.

Richard often texted from international trips.

When messages arrived late at night, Victoria sometimes answered.

Digital extraction showed seventeen messages sent from Emily’s phone during periods school camera or Laura’s records showed Emily was elsewhere.

Examples:

Richard:

Miss you. How was orchestra?

Reply:

Fine. Quit. Too busy.

Richard:

Why did you quit?

Reply:

Just don’t like it anymore.

Emily had never sent that.

Another:

Richard:

Want me home for parent night?

Reply:

No. Victoria’s going.

Emily had wanted him there.

Another:

Richard:

Everything okay?

Reply:

Yes, Dad. Stop worrying.

Emily had never seen it.

Victoria also created an email rule in Richard’s personal account after he once logged in on home office computer.

Messages from Emily’s school containing:

attendance;

parent meeting;

counselor;

Stonebridge;

therapy

were moved into an archive folder.

Not deleted.

Hidden.

Richard checked email on phone and rarely searched archive.

Simple.

School changed primary contact after receiving electronically signed form.

Signature copied.

Again.

No sophisticated cybercrime.

Household access abused.

Why did Richard not notice?

Because Victoria supplied explanations.

“Emily’s tired.”

“Emily’s moody.”

“She doesn’t want you hovering.”

“She’s adjusting after Katherine’s death.”

“She needs boundaries.”

Some sounded plausible.

Richard wanted marriage to work.

He did not challenge.

That failure became his burden.

But not equal to Victoria’s conduct.

He told Emily:

“I should have checked.”

Emily replied:

“You asked sometimes.”

“I accepted answers too easily.”

No endless apology.

Repair through behavior.

The fifth chapter would follow household staff.

Victoria had told them Emily’s labor was part of “discipline” and “character building.”

One housekeeper quit.

A driver kept notes.

A chef saw meals withheld from Emily after arguments.

Independent witnesses would show the party was not isolated.

But evidence would also show no secret physical beatings over years.

The cruelty was systematic humiliation, overwork, isolation, and emotional control—serious enough without invented violence.

The digital review found no spyware on Emily’s phone and no sophisticated hacking of Richard’s accounts. Victoria relied on household access, saved passwords, and ordinary family-device permissions. That made the manipulation more plausible and, in some ways, more disturbing.
