Chapter 10 - ASHLEY

Ashley’s birthday ended with cake on marble and forty guests leaving in silence.
At first she blamed Emily.
“You ruined everything.”
Then videos circulated privately among investigators.
Ashley watched one.
She saw herself laughing while Emily stood in a stained apron crying.
For the first time, she saw the scene from outside.
Her school opened bullying review after several friends admitted Ashley routinely called Emily “servant.”
Ashley was suspended from student leadership and required counseling.
Not expelled.
No criminalization of teenage cruelty.
Therapy uncovered a household message repeated for years:
Emily is dramatic.
Emily gets special treatment because her mother died.
Emily’s trust means she will always be favored.
Ashley must “earn” attention.
Victoria had recruited Ashley into competition.
That did not erase choice.
At first Ashley’s apology was poor.
“I’m sorry if you felt humiliated.”
Emily refused.
Months later:
“I laughed because Mom taught me you deserved it, and because it made me feel powerful. You didn’t.”
Better.
Emily still said:
“I don’t want to live with you.”
Accepted.
Richard did not force sisterhood.
Ashley moved with maternal aunt after Victoria’s sentencing.
Richard had no parental authority over her after divorce except emotional history.
He offered to pay counseling through a transparent agreement, not Emily’s trust.
Ashley accepted.
At eighteen, she wrote Emily a letter.
No demand response.
Emily waited two years.
Then wrote:
“I hope you become different. I’m not ready to be close.”
Good.
The eleventh chapter would follow Richard’s guilt and repair.
He had been deceived.
He had also been absent.
He needed to stop turning apology into burden on Emily.
Repair meant presence, direct communication, and allowing her to regain ordinary teenage life.
Ashley’s therapy also addressed the social reward she received from friends when she mocked Emily. Several apologized privately after seeing the full video. Ashley had learned that cruelty performed for an audience can feel like status.
Unlearning it required accepting that laughter had been participation, not neutrality.
