Chapter 19 - The Ghost's Confession

Ethan kept his weapon leveled at Evelyn’s chest with his right hand, dropping to one knee to flip open the journal with his left.

The pages were filled with Caroline’s delicate handwriting, dated five years ago—months before her fatal crash.

*November 12th:*

*The headaches are getting worse. The doctors in Boston confirmed it today: an inoperable glioblastoma at the base of my skull. Six months. Maybe eight. I can’t tell Ethan. If he knows I am dying, he will burn the medical world down trying to save me, leaving him exposed to the syndicate wolves circling our family.*

Ethan’s heart stopped. The breath caught in his throat like broken glass.

*Glioblastoma?* Caroline was dying of brain cancer?

He frantically turned the pages, his hand shaking violently.

*December 4th:*

*Marcus knows. He came to my private clinic. He threatened to use my illness to force Ethan into stepping down from the syndicate council. He told me that if I didn't sign over Sophie’s guardianship to the board, he would stage an 'accident' for Ethan. I have to protect my husband. I have to protect my daughter. Evelyn has set up a safe haven in Switzerland. I am going to fake my death on the coastal highway. Marcus will think he won, and Ethan will be safe in his rage.*

*December 18th:*

*Something went wrong. Vanessa Sterling found out about the plan. She intercepted my car before the stunt driver could stage the wreck. My brakes... they aren't responding. Oh God, Ethan, I'm so sorry. I love you. Forgive me.*

Ethan dropped the journal. His vision blurred with hot, suffocating tears.

Caroline hadn't been murdered by an outside hitman. She had been trying to sacrifice herself to save Ethan from Marcus and the board, only for Vanessa and Marcus to turn her fake escape into a real, horrific execution.

"She wasn't trying to leave you because she hated you, Ethan," Evelyn said softly, her voice cracking for the first time, lowering her submachine gun. "She was trying to draw Marcus's assassins away from your house. And when she died, Marcus sent me forged audio tapes making it look like *you* paid Vanessa to kill her so you could take her family trust."

Ethan looked up, the gun in his hand slowly dipping toward the floor. "Marcus played us both. From the very beginning."

"He wanted us to destroy each other," Evelyn whispered, tears glistening in her eyes. "He wanted you dead, me in prison, and Sophie under his legal custody so he could plunder the offshore billions."

Suddenly, the Citadel’s heavy vault door behind the kitchen clicked.

Ethan turned sharply. "Maria, no! Stay inside!"

Maria stepped out into the foyer, her Glock raised, her body shielding Sophie, who followed closely behind her. But Sophie didn't look at the guns. She didn't look at the blood or the smoke.

Sophie’s eyes locked onto Evelyn.

Sophie walked past Maria’s protective grip, stepping into the center of the ruined foyer. She looked up at the woman who possessed her mother’s eyes, her mother’s cheekbones, and her mother’s silver-tinted hair.

"Aunt Evelyn?" Sophie whispered.

Evelyn dropped her weapon onto the floor. The hardened cartel assassin collapsed to her knees, sobbing openly, opening her arms toward the child she had spent four years mourning.

Sophie took two steps forward—

And then, the sound of a heavy sniper rifle cracked from the dark tree line high above the shattered entryway.
