Chapter 18 - The Siege of Montauk

Gunfire erupted across the rocky bluffs outside, sharp and deafening like a string of firecrackers echoing against the roaring surf.

Ethan didn't hesitate. He pulled Maria and Sophie toward the fortified inner panic vault behind the kitchen pantry. "Get inside! Seal the pressure wheel!"

"Ethan, take this," Maria said, shoving an extra magazine into his hand, her face fierce and resolved. "Don't let them take her."

"Over my dead body," Ethan growled.

The heavy vault door slammed shut, its hydraulic pins locking into concrete with a deep, final *thud*.

Ethan sprinted toward the main monitoring station in the central foyer. The security monitors were flickering, but camera four showed horrific carnage: four of his elite guards were already down, neutralized by suppressed armor-piercing rounds.

Moving through the mist like apparitions were six operatives clad in high-tech urban gray camouflage, led by a tall, striking woman with long silver-streaked dark hair, wearing a Kevlar vest over a tailored black coat.

Evelyn Vance.

She carried a silenced MPX submachine gun, moving with lethal, surgical precision. She wasn't just a bitter socialite seeking revenge; she was a trained, cold-blooded operative who commanded the shadow cartel.

The blast doors at the front entrance shuddered violently as a shaped breaching charge exploded. Dust, concrete chips, and thick white smoke billowed into the foyer.

Ethan took cover behind a reinforced granite pillar, his SIG Sauer raised, leveling his sights on the doorway.

The first two gray-clad mercenaries entered through the smoke, clearing their corners. Ethan fired twice. Two clean center-mass shots dropped them instantly.

The remaining mercenaries opened up with suppressive fire, chewing the granite pillar into powdery shrapnel. Ethan rolled across the floor into a defensive alcove, returning fire, dropping a third assailant with a bullet through the eye socket.

"Ethan Hawthorne!"

A voice cut through the gunfire, clear, crystalline, and bone-chillingly calm.

The firing stopped. The smoke began to clear in the amber light.

Evelyn Vance stepped through the blown threshold, stepping over the corpses of her men without looking down. In her right hand, she held a detonator. In her left, she held an antique leather-bound journal.

"You shoot me, and the thermite charges planted along the cliff wall will collapse this entire bunker into the ocean," Evelyn said, her hazel eyes—Caroline’s eyes—staring straight into the shadows where Ethan was crouched. "Including the panic vault where you hid my niece."

Ethan stepped out from the alcove, his gun still leveled directly between her eyes. "You touch that detonator, Evelyn, and I will tear your throat out with my bare hands."

Evelyn offered a sad, bitter smile that sent chills down Ethan’s spine. "Still the arrogant warlord. You think you’re protecting Sophie from me? You poor, blind fool."

She threw the leather journal onto the polished floor between them. It skidded to a halt at Ethan’s feet.

"Open it," Evelyn commanded. "Read what my sister wrote the week before she supposedly 'died'."
