Chapter 7 - The Breach at Gate 41

The impact sounded like a bomb going off.
The chain-link fence buckled, tore, and wrapped around the hood of the SUV like a metallic net. The wooden support posts shattered into splinters. The vehicle launched airborne for a terrifying split second as it cleared the concrete drainage culvert, landing hard on the active airfield tarmac with a violent crunch of metal and suspension coils.
Both front airbags deployed with a concussive blast of white powder.
Elena didn't hesitate. She drew her combat knife from her tactical vest with one fluid stroke, slashed the nylon airbag in front of her face, and shoved the deflated fabric out of the way.
The engine was smoking, the radiator cracked and hissing steam into the freezing rain, but the heavy V8 was still running. Elena slammed the gas pedal to the floorboards. The SUV limped forward, its front bumper scraping against the concrete, throwing sparks through the downpour as it barreled across the tarmac directly toward the taxiing Gulfstream.
Inside the cockpit of the private jet, the pilot looked out his side window and choked on his coffee.
"Tower, we have an unauthorized vehicle on the taxiway! Repeat, unauthorized vehicle approaching our port side at high speed!"
The pilot slammed on the brakes. The massive jet lurched forward, its nose gear dipping as the heavy rubber tires squealed against the slick asphalt, coming to an abrupt halt barely two hundred yards from the active runway.
Behind the plane, two black Cadillac Escalades—the private security escort hired by Ward Vanguard—immediately spun around, their high-intensity LED searchlights blinding Elena through the rain.
Four men in black tactical raincoats stepped out of the Escalades. They didn't draw standard security tasers. They drew suppressed MPX submachine guns, moving with the cold, practiced discipline of former tier-one military contractors.
"Contractors," Noah whispered, blood trickling from a small cut on his forehead where he had bumped the dashboard. "Elena, they're going to shoot us!"
Elena slammed the Explorer into park forty yards from the jet. She reached behind the back seat and unlatched the lockbox Colonel Miller had left in the cargo bay. Inside rested a standard-issue tactical shotgun and a pair of non-lethal flashbang grenades.
"Stay in the car, Noah," Elena commanded. "Keep your head down."
"Elena—"
"STAY DOWN!"
Elena kicked open the driver's side door, using the heavy armored door frame as cover.
"DROP YOUR WEAPONS!" Elena roared over the deafening whine of the jet engines and the drumming rain. "UNITED STATES ARMY SPECIAL OPERATIONS! BY ORDER OF THE DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE, STAND DOWN!"
The lead security contractor, a burly man with a scar running across his jawline, raised his submachine gun. He didn't care about the Department of Justice. His contract was paid through a private account in Switzerland, and his instructions were simple: the package leaves the country, no matter what.
"Take her down!" the lead contractor shouted into his collar mic.
The sharp, rhythmic *chug-chug-chug* of suppressed gunfire erupted. Rounds pinged off the armored engine block of the Explorer, shattering the remaining glass of the windshield into crystalline dust.
Elena didn't flinch. She had fought through the mountains of Tora Bora and the urban alleys of Fallujah. These men were mercenaries fighting for a paycheck; she was a mother fighting for the life of her son.
There was no contest.
Elena popped out from behind the door frame, raised the shotgun, and fired two deafening rounds into the engine blocks of the Escalades. The heavy slugs punched through the radiators, spewing blinding clouds of boiling steam and coolant directly into the faces of the shooters.
Before the contractors could adjust their night-vision optics through the steam, Elena was moving.
She crossed the twenty yards of open tarmac like a phantom through the mist. She closed the distance before the lead contractor could re-aim his weapon, sweeping his legs out from under him with a vicious low kick that sent him crashing onto his back. She drove the butt of her weapon into his temple, neutralizing him instantly.
The second contractor lunged forward, drawing a combat blade. Elena sidestepped the thrust, caught his wrist, twisted it upward until the joint popped, and slammed him face-first into the wet fuselage of the jet.
The third and fourth contractors froze.
They stood in the pouring rain, their weapons lowered, staring at the female officer standing over their unconscious commander. Her uniform was soaked with water and motor oil, her eyes burning with an unholy, terrifying resolve that made their blood run cold.
"Anyone else want to die for a billionaire who’s currently sitting in handcuffs?" Elena asked, her voice dropping into a deadly whisper.
The two men slowly raised their hands, dropped their weapons onto the concrete, and backed away.

Elena didn't look at them again. She turned toward the main emergency hatch of the Gulfstream G650.
