Chapter 4 - The Puppet Master's Fall

The heavy doors flew open, crashing against the interior drywall with a deafening bang.

The hallway was filled with men wearing charcoal-gray tactical gear, Kevlar vests emblazoned with golden badges, and carbines held at the low-ready position. Leading the breach was Special Agent Marcus Vance of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, flanked by four armed investigators from the United States Army Criminal Investigation Division.

"FEDERAL AGENTS! NOBODY MOVE!"

The courtroom exploded into chaos. Bradley Vance dove beneath the defense table, his hands over his head. Court clerks scrambled against the back wall. Only Elena remained standing, her shoulders squared, as she offered a crisp, regulation salute to the lead CID colonel walking through the door.

"Colonel Miller," Elena said.

"Captain Ward," the gray-haired colonel replied, returning the salute with solemn precision. He turned his gaze toward the defense table, his eyes narrowing into cold slits of disgust. "Victor Ward. Eleanor Ward. By order of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois and the Department of Defense, you are under arrest for espionage, conspiracy to commit treason, procurement fraud, and the murder of Captain Marcus Sterling."

Eleanor Ward screamed—a high, piercing sound that shredded the remaining dignity of the room—and collapsed back into her chair, hyperventilating into her silk handkerchief.

Victor, however, did not scream. The initial shock had receded, replaced by the calculating, venomous defiance of a cornered predator. He slowly reached toward the breast pocket of his bespoke suit jacket.

"GUN!" one of the FBI agents shouted, leveling an M4 carbine directly at Victor's forehead.

"It’s a phone, you idiot!" Victor snarled, slowly pulling out an encrypted, custom-built titanium smartphone. "Go ahead! Shoot me! Shoot the man who designed the avionics in every F-35 fighter jet in the Western hemisphere! Shoot me and see what happens to the market at nine o'clock tomorrow morning!"

Victor rapidly tapped three numbers on the screen and held the phone to his ear, his voice ringing with psychotic confidence. "Senator Ross. It's Victor. They just breached Courtroom 302. I need the Attorney General on the phone right now. I need the Chicago field office stood down within five minutes, or the dossier on the Riyadh project goes to the international press."

There was a five-second silence. Victor held the phone with a triumphant grin, waiting for the machinery of corruption to grind the federal agents into dust.

Then, through the speaker of the phone, a weary, defeated voice responded.

"Victor... it’s over."

Victor’s smirk flickered. "What did you say?"

"The Director of National Intelligence briefed the President forty minutes ago," Senator Ross’s voice crackled through the secure line, loud enough for the entire front row to hear. "The Joint Chiefs have frozen all Ward Vanguard assets. Every server bank in your headquarters was raided twenty minutes ago by two companies of the 75th Ranger Regiment. They have the hard drives, Victor. They have the financial logs. If I even say your name in public, I will spend the rest of my life in ADX Florence. Don't call this number again."

The line went dead with a hollow tone.

The titanium phone slipped from Victor’s fingers, tumbling through the air and cracking against the hardwood floor.

The silence that followed was suffocating.

The billionaire stood motionless, staring at the shattered glass of his phone. The invisible web of power he had spent forty years weaving—the senators he had bought, the generals he had dined with, the judges he had blackmailed—had vanished in an instant, blown away like smoke against the immovable mountain of military treason.

"Cuff him," Colonel Miller commanded quietly.

Two FBI agents stepped forward, grabbing Victor’s arms and forcing them behind his back. The metal ratchets clicked—*clack-clack-clack*—locking his wrists tightly into cold steel. Eleanor was gently pulled up from her seat, weeping hysterically, her designer heels dragging across the floor as a female agent read her the Miranda rights.

Elena watched them. She felt no joy. She felt no triumphant thrill of vengeance. She only felt an immense, crushing exhaustion that settled into the marrow of her bones.

She turned toward Judge Carter, whose gavel was still clutched in her hand.

"Your Honor," Elena said softly, her voice cracking for the first time since the ordeal had begun. "The custody petition."

Judge Carter looked at the decorated captain standing before her. The jurist wiped a tear from her eye, picked up her fountain pen, and signed the broad parchment document resting on her bench.

"Petition for temporary guardianship by Victor and Eleanor Ward is dismissed with prejudice," Judge Carter announced, her voice ringing with absolute authority. "Sole, unrestricted legal and physical custody of the minor child, Leo Sterling-Ward, is hereby restored to his mother, Captain Elena Ward. May God have mercy on this family."

Elena let out a ragged breath, closing her eyes for a single second.

Then, a sudden, chilling realization struck her like ice water poured down her spine.

She looked at her father. Despite the handcuffs, despite the federal agents holding him, Victor Ward was looking at her. And through the shock and defeat on his weathered face... a terrible, twisted smile began to spread across his lips.

"You won the paperwork, Elena," Victor whispered, his voice dripping with venom. "You won the courtroom."

Elena stepped closer, her instincts screaming danger. "Where is Leo, Victor?"

Victor chuckled—a low, raspy, demonic sound. "Do you really think I brought him to the courthouse? Do you really think I would leave my only leverage in a nursery while I faced an audit?"

Noah gasped from the railing. "Elena... he told the driver to take Leo to the private hangar at O'Hare two hours ago!"

May you like

Elena’s heart stopped.
