Chapter 7 - The Desperate Strike

Victor stared at the tiny gold drive in Emma's hand as if it were a venomous serpent. His chest heaved in violent, ragged gasps. The walls of his carefully constructed reality were collapsing in real-time, burying him beneath the rubble of his own arrogance.

"You think you won?" Victor whispered, a terrifying, unhinged smile slowly twisting his lips. "You think you're clever, Emma?"

He slowly reached into his tuxedo jacket.

Marcus reacted instantly, stepping between Emma and Victor, his hand moving toward his own concealed holster. "Security! Down!"

But Victor didn't pull a gun.

He pulled out a rugged, military-grade satellite radio transceiver. He pressed a button on the side and held it to his mouth.

"Alpha team, execute protocol nine," Victor spoke into the receiver, his voice dripping with manic venom. "Burn the clinic. Leave nobody alive."

Emma’s blood turned to liquid ice.

"Leo!" she screamed, the name tearing from her throat in a ragged, terrified cry.

Victor let out a barking, demonic laugh, tossing the transceiver onto the floor. "You thought I didn't know about the clinic in Switzerland, Sterling?! You thought you were the only one playing chess?! The moment my father had that stroke, I dispatched an extraction team to Bern! If I don't send an hourly abort code, your brain-dead little brother dies in a fire!"

"You monster!" Emma lunged, but Marcus caught her, holding her firmly against his chest.

Victor backed away toward the rear service exit, his eyes wild and bloodshot. "Give me the drive, Emma! Give me the drive and sign the patent release forms right now, or your brother's hospital room becomes an incinerator!"

The room was plunged into absolute chaos. High-society women shrieked, men scrambled for the exits, and security alarms began blaring as the tension reached a boiling point.

Emma looked up at Marcus, her eyes filled with blinding terror. "Marcus... Leo... please, Marcus, do something! Not Leo!"

Marcus looked down at her. His expression was not one of panic.

It was the look of an apex predator that had anticipated every single move the prey could possibly make.

Marcus tapped the miniature communication piece hidden inside his left ear.

"Captain Thorne," Marcus said calmly into the mic, completely ignoring Victor’s manic threats. "Patch through the Swiss feed to the main ballroom projection screen."

Victor froze near the service exit. "What?"

Above the grand stage, the massive ninety-foot digital display that had previously shown the Harrison Foundation logo flickered.

A high-definition live satellite video feed flashed onto the screen.

The image displayed the sterile, modern hallways of the private clinic in Bern, Switzerland. Lying face down on the polished linoleum, handcuffed and zip-tied, were four men dressed in tactical black combat gear, their weapons confiscated and stacked against the wall.

Standing over them, wearing the insignia of the Swiss Federal Tactical Police, was a squad commander, who looked directly into the camera and gave a crisp nod.

Beside him, through the glass window of an intensive care suite, sat young Leo Montgomery—breathing steadily, surrounded by top-tier medical monitors, completely unharmed.

"Did you really believe, Victor," Marcus said, his voice echoing over the ballroom like rolling thunder, "that I would bring Emma into this room without securing her family first? Your mercenaries were intercepted twenty minutes before they even crossed the French-Swiss border. You have no leverage. You have no money. You have no escape."

May you like

Victor’s knees finally gave out. He stumbled backward against the mahogany doors, his eyes wide with the realization of total, irrecoverable defeat.
