Chapter 10 - Dawn Over Manhattan

Three weeks later.
The morning sun rose brilliant and golden over the Manhattan skyline, bathing the glass towers in a warm, radiant amber.
Inside the executive boardroom on the top floor of the newly christened Montgomery-Sterling Tower, the scene was entirely transformed from the nightmare at Café Trieste.
Floor-to-ceiling mahogany lined the walls. Across the massive polished conference table sat the new board of directors, comprising brilliant engineers, ethical venture capitalists, and the federal receivers who had cleared the Montgomery name of all historic debt.
At the head of the table sat Emma Montgomery.
She wore a crisp, tailored cream-colored pantsuit, her honey-brown hair neatly styled, her posture radiating confidence, authority, and grace. On her shoulder, under the silk fabric, the burn had healed into a faint, smooth line—a badge of survival rather than a wound of victimhood.
Beside her, in his customary charcoal suit, sat Marcus Sterling, reviewing the quarterly earnings projections.
"The settlement was finalized this morning, Miss Montgomery," the legal counsel announced from the lower end of the table. "Arthur Harrison passed away last night in the prison hospital following a second stroke. Victor has accepted a non-negotiable plea agreement: twenty-five years without the possibility of parole at ADX Florence."
The room was silent for a brief moment. Emma closed her eyes, offering a silent prayer for her father's soul. The wheel of justice had turned, grinding the Harrison dynasty to absolute dust.
"And Project Icarus?" Emma asked, opening her eyes, her gaze clear and decisive.
"The renewable energy algorithms are already operational," Marcus replied, looking at her with quiet pride. "The prototype generators will provide free power to municipal hospitals across the tri-state area starting next spring. Just as Thomas envisioned."
"Good," Emma nodded firmly. "Adjourn the meeting. Let’s go."
As the board members stood and filed out of the room with respectful bows to the young chairwoman, Emma walked to the panoramic window looking out over the city.
A gentle breeze fluttered the sheer curtains. Marcus walked up behind her, standing close enough that she could feel the heat radiating from his body.
"Your flight to Zurich is ready," Marcus murmured, his hands lightly resting on her waist. "Dr. Evans called. Leo woke up an hour ago. He asked for his sister."
A radiant, beautiful smile spread across Emma's face, lighting up the entire room. "Then let's not keep him waiting."
She turned around in his embrace, looking up into those gray eyes that had once seemed so cold and terrifying, but now felt like the safest place in the universe.
"You know," Emma teased lightly, a playful spark dancing in her amber eyes, "Mrs. Gable called me yesterday. She offered me my old job back at Café Trieste. Said she'd even give me a twenty-five-cent raise."
Marcus arched an eyebrow, a rare, genuine smirk tugging at his lips. "Did she? And what did the billionaire chairwoman of Montgomery Aerospace say?"
Emma reached up, her fingers adjusting the lapels of his charcoal suit, her touch lingering against his chest where his heart beat strong and steady.
"I told her I had already found a full-time position," Emma whispered, leaning up on her tiptoes.
"Doing what?" Marcus asked, his head dipping lower, his breath brushing her lips.
May you like
"Ruling the world with the man who saved my life," Emma replied softly.
And as Marcus Sterling closed the distance between them, sealing their victory with a deep, passionate kiss against the backdrop of the waking city, the shadow of the past dissolved completely into the brilliant, unstoppable light of the morning.
