He had once had influence.
He had controlled rooms simply by entering them.

So Victor stopped trying to buy forgiveness.
He began earning trust instead.
One day he asked Lily:
“Do you hate me?”
She thought.
“No.”
“Do you forgive me?”
She shook her head.
“I don't think forgiveness works like a switch.”

“What do you think it is?”
“Something people earn when they stop demanding it.”
