Chapter 7 - The Bloodline Secret

“Charge to thirty!” Adrian roared, his voice cracking with the strain of a man refusing to yield to the Grim Reaper. “Clear!”
*THUMP!*
For two agonizing seconds, the silence inside the surgical suite was heavier than the ocean.
Then, deep within the center of the synthetic graft, a solitary muscle fiber twitched.
A second later, the ventricle contracted with a powerful, shuddering spasm. The internal sinus node fired.
*Ba-dump.*
On the digital monitor, a jagged green spike broke through the flatline.
*Ba-dump... Ba-dump... Ba-dump...*
“Sinus rhythm restored,” the anesthesiologist whispered, collapsing back against his console in sheer, exhausted disbelief. “Blood pressure climbing. Seventy over forty... eighty over fifty. The synthetic graft is accepting the native vascular bed. The genetic marker match is... it’s one hundred percent.”
Elena fell against the edge of the operating table, tears cascading down her face beneath the plastic visor, soaking through the paper mask. “Leo... oh God, Leo...”
“He’s stable,” Adrian breathed, pulling down his mask and wiping the sweat and blood from his jaw. “The tissue matrix isn't just working—it’s repairing the microvascular damage in his pulmonary arteries. The kid has the cardiovascular profile of an Olympic athlete now. But we aren't out of the woods yet.”
He walked over to the biometric sequencer that had processed the genetic compatibility tests between Leo’s marrow and the donor heart. He pulled the digital readout from the thermal printer, his eyes scanning the genomic sequence.
His expression twisted into profound shock.
“Adrian?” Elena asked, wiping her eyes with a sterile sleeve. “What is it? What does it say?”
Adrian walked over to the shatterproof bunker door. He tapped the electronic security panel, bringing up the external surveillance feed of the utility corridor outside.
The corridor was an abattoir.
Dozens of Volkov’s heavily armed mercenaries lay dead or incapacitated across the concrete floor, surrounded by thousands of spent brass casings. Luca Santos was slumped against a support pillar, clutching a shattered shoulder, but still breathing.
In the center of the subterranean junction, two men remained standing.
Julian Thorne and Viktor Volkov.
Both were disarmed, their weapons knocked into the flooded gutters of the utility floor. They were locked in a brutal, primeval hand-to-hand combat. Julian’s face was bruised and cut, his knuckles split to the bone, but his movements were cold, lethal, and relentlessly offensive. He slipped a vicious left hook from Volkov, drove a devastating palm strike directly into the Russian kingpin’s throat, and followed with a sweeping leg takedown that slammed Volkov onto the wet concrete.
Before Volkov could roll, Julian pinned him by the throat with his heavy boot, retrieving a serrated trench knife from his waistband and pressing the razor-sharp tip against the Russian’s jugular.
Adrian hit the emergency intercom toggle on the bunker wall.
“Julian! Stop!” Adrian’s voice echoed across the external speakers in the utility corridor. “Don’t kill him!”
Julian looked up into the security camera lens, his eyes wild, feral, breathing heavily like a predator interrupted at the kill. He didn't lift his boot.
“Give me one reason, Adrian!” Julian shouted, his voice echoing off the damp concrete. “He murdered Sarah Vance! He sent an army into a children’s hospital! He tried to slaughter your patient!”
Adrian looked back at Elena, then down at the genetic readout in his hand.
“Because Sarah Vance wasn't working alone when she synthesized that tissue,” Adrian said through the speaker, every word dropping like lead into the frozen subterranean air. “The genetic donor profile that made Leo’s tissue compatible with the Prometheus matrix—the paternal markers that matched the synthetic heart...”
Adrian swallowed hard, looking Julian directly in the camera.
“Leo isn't your enemy’s son, Julian. Ten years ago, before the war broke out, our father didn't just protect Sarah Vance. He loved her.”
Julian froze. His boot remained on Volkov’s neck, but his entire posture stiffened as if he had been struck by lightning.
“What are you saying?” Julian rasped.
“Sarah Vance was our father’s secret wife,” Adrian said, his voice breaking with emotion. “She was pregnant when our father was assassinated. She vanished into the city under an assumed identity to protect her unborn child from the syndicate families. Elena was her daughter from a previous marriage. But Leo...”
Adrian looked through the glass at the little boy breathing steadily on the surgical table.

“Leo is our brother, Julian. He’s our father’s youngest son. He carries the Thorne blood.”
