Chapter 4 - The Russian Shadow

The pitch-black hallway outside the room erupted into chaos.
Elena screamed, throwing her body over Leo’s fragile frame as sparks exploded from the corridor wall. High-caliber rounds chewed through the drywall, sending clouds of chalky plaster and shredded insulation raining down into the room.
Julian was already in motion.
With blinding speed, he grabbed Elena by the shoulder, shoving her down into the fortified recess beneath the heavy steel bedframe. “Stay down! Keep your head between your knees!”
Before the plaster dust could even settle, Julian lunged toward the door frame, dropping to one knee. The infrared night-vision strobes of the approaching strike team cut through the darkness like ghostly green searchlights.
*Crack! Crack! Crack!*
Julian fired three precise shots into the hallway. A muffled grunt followed, accompanied by the clatter of a tactical rifle dropping onto the linoleum. A Russian operative in full black combat gear collapsed into the doorway, blood pooling rapidly behind his ballistic helmet.
Adrian moved with the clinical detachment of a man who had stitched wounds under artillery fire in Chechnya. He reached beneath the crash cart, pulling out a sawed-off 12-gauge shotgun he had evidently stashed behind the defibrillator units hours before.
“There are at least eight of them,” Adrian said, pumping a shell into the chamber with a heavy, mechanical snap. “Volkov’s elite cleaners. They aren't taking prisoners. They will execute everyone on this floor, detach Leo’s life-support, and extract him via rooftop helicopter.”
“Not in my city,” Julian growled.
He reached into his pocket, retrieving a miniature remote detonate trigger. He hit the toggle switch.
Two floors below, in the hospital’s primary electrical riser, the secondary charges Julian’s men had planted earlier detonated with a concussive *BOOM* that shook the entire structure. The sudden blast severed the hospital’s central elevator cables, sending the three operational elevator banks plummeting into the basement safety arrestors with an apocalyptic shriek of tearing metal.
The staircase was now the only route up or down.
“Adrian!” Julian barked over the ringing in their ears. “How long does Leo have if we pull him off this wall monitor?”
“On the transport battery? Twelve minutes,” Adrian shouted back, bracing his back against the wall next to Julian. “Fourteen if I manually pump the left-ventricle assist bulb! But the donor heart—the synthetic patch—it’s arriving via the subterranean medical tunnel from the North Wing. If we don’t reach the lower service bay, the organ will expire, and Leo dies on the gurney!”
“Then we go down,” Julian said.
He glanced down beneath the bed. Elena was trembling violently, her fingers digging into the metal frame, her eyes wild with terror. But despite the sheer, mind-numbing horror of the gunfight, she hadn't abandoned Leo. She was shielding him with her own flesh.
Julian reached down, his blood-splattered hand taking hers with an intensity that pierced through her panic.
“Elena. Look at me.”
Her tear-streaked face snapped toward his.
“You asked me at the club why I was helping you,” Julian said, his eyes blazing in the dark. “Ten years ago, my syndicate failed your mother. We were supposed to extract her before Volkov’s men reached her safehouse. We were twenty minutes late. My father covered it up to prevent a full-scale panic in the ranks. But I swore on my mother's grave that I would settle every debt my family ever incurred.”
He pulled her up from the floor, his grip unyielding.
“Your brother does not die tonight. I will burn this entire city to the ground before I let Volkov touch a hair on his head. Now take the manual oxygen bag. You pump the air into his lungs. Adrian will guide the gurney. I will clear the path.”
A fresh wave of footsteps echoed down the hall. Heavy combat boots crunching over broken glass.
Julian pulled a flashbang canister from his tactical belt, pulled the pin with his teeth, and banked it off the far door frame into the advancing Russian fireteam.
*BANG!*
A blinding sphere of white light and a 170-decibel shockwave shattered the remaining glass panels in the hallway.
“MOVE!” Julian roared.
He burst into the smoke-choked corridor, the Sig Sauer barking rhythmically in his right hand while he retrieved a combat knife in his left. Adrian shoved the heavy pediatric gurney forward with tremendous force, wheels skidding over blood and glass, while Elena ran alongside it, her thumb rhythmically squeezing the blue resuscitation bulb: *Squeeze... release... squeeze... release...*
The corridor became a nightmare gauntlet of smoke, gunpowder, and screams. A masked Russian gunman staggered out of an adjacent room, his rifle raising toward Elena.
Julian didn't hesitate. He closed the distance in a single stride, deflecting the rifle barrel upward with his left forearm as three rounds pulverized the acoustic ceiling tiles above. With a guttural roar, Julian drove the heel of his combat boot into the operative’s knee, shattering the joint, and brought the slide of his pistol down across the man’s temple with skull-crushing finality.
Before the body hit the floor, Julian seized the fallen operative's tactical radio.
A voice was barking in Russian through the static.
*“Bratva team! Report! Have you secured the Vance child? Viktor is arriving at the perimeter!”*
Julian keyed the microphone. His voice was freezing, dripping with absolute malice.
“Tell Viktor,” Julian said in flawless, chilling Russian, “that if he wants this boy’s heart, he’ll have to cut it out of my chest first.”

Julian dropped the radio, crushed it beneath his heel, and kicked open the heavy fire doors to the emergency stairwell.
