Chapter 6 - Whispers in the Dark

The concussive crack of the .45 in the enclosed concrete hallway was deafening.

Marcus Cole let out a high-pitched, gargling scream as both of his kneecaps shattered under the impact of the heavy hollow-point rounds. His legs buckled instantly, and his massive frame slammed onto the concrete floor like a felled oak.

Damian’s combat instincts were instantaneous. The moment the muzzle flashed, he dropped his cigarillo and dove sideways into the recessed alcove of the wine cellar door, unholstering his custom Sig Sauer P226 in mid-air.

*BANG! BANG! BANG!*

Damian blind-fired three rounds down the corridor. The bullets sparked violently against the steel frame of the laundry room door, gouging deep chunks out of the concrete wall.

Alexander didn't flinch. He had already sidestepped behind a heavy, steel-reinforced pillar.

"DAMIAN!" Alexander’s voice echoed down the subterranean tunnel, sounding less like a human being and more like a primordial force of nature. "Twenty years, brother! Is fifty million all my life was worth to you?!"

"DON'T BE NAIVE, ALEX!" Damian screamed back from behind the alcove, reloading his weapon with a practiced *clack*. "You died six years ago when Clara burned in that car! You’ve been a ghost walking through this empire ever since! You spend half our revenue bribing federal marshals to chase rumors about Sophie! Sophie is dead, Alex! Clara is dead! And you're dragging the whole family down into the grave with your grief!"

While the two former brothers shouted across the corridor of ricocheting bullets, a shadow moved along the opposite wall.

Elena.

She wasn't wearing shoes. Her bare feet made zero sound against the dusty concrete. Moving beneath the line of sight, keeping behind the low industrial pipes that ran along the floor, she crawled toward the writhing, screaming form of Marcus Cole.

Marcus was lying on his back, clawing at his ruined knees, gasping for air through a mouth full of bile and blood. His pistol had skittered four feet away from him across the slick floor. He saw Elena approach, his eyes widening in sheer, disbelieving horror.

"You..." Marcus wheezed, his bloody hand reaching desperately for the discarded gun. "You bitch..."

Elena didn't hesitate.

All the fear, all the degradation, all the nights spent listening to her little brother cry through chemotherapy treatments while she counted pennies for bus fare—all of it condensed into the cold, iron weight of the maintenance wrench.

She swung it with both hands, driving the heavy cast-iron head directly into Marcus Cole’s collarbone with a sickening *CRACK*.

Marcus shrieked, his arm going completely limp.

Before he could scream again, Elena planted her bare heel directly onto his shattered knee, pressing down with all of her weight. Marcus’s eyes rolled back into his head, his scream choking into a silent, agonizing gasp as he passed out from the sheer threshold of pain.

Elena snatched the leather-bound shipping ledger from Marcus’s open tactical vest.

"Alex!" she yelled, rolling toward the cover of a laundry trolley just as Damian turned his gun toward her.

*BANG!*

Damian’s bullet ripped through the metal side of the laundry trolley, missing Elena’s head by three inches.

"LITTLE RAT!" Damian snarled, lunging forward to finish her.

He never got the chance.

Alexander stepped out from behind the pillar, his Kimber leveled with lethal precision.

*BANG!*

The round caught Damian in his right shoulder, spinning him violently around. Damian’s Sig Sauer flew from his hand, skattering across the concrete into the darkness. Damian slammed against the reinforced steel door of the wine cellar, his hand clutching his bleeding shoulder, his breath coming in ragged, bloody gasps.

Alexander walked forward, his footsteps slow, deliberate, and terrifying.

He stopped two feet in front of his former lieutenant. He pressed the still-smoking barrel of the Kimber directly against Damian’s forehead.

"Who took Sophie?" Alexander asked.

The question was so calm, so devoid of rage, that it made Damian shudder more than a scream ever could.

"Alex... please..." Damian coughed, blood bubbling at the corner of his lips. "We were brothers..."

"Who took my daughter, Damian?" Alexander repeated, pressing the barrel harder until the steel indented the skin between Damian’s eyes. "The lighter in the room. The lock of hair. You didn't buy that on the black market. You didn't invent that. Who gave it to you?"

Damian looked up into Alexander’s gray eyes. He saw no mercy there. No history. No brotherhood. Only an empty abyss waiting to swallow his soul.

A bitter, bloody laugh escaped Damian’s chest.

"You think... you think you're the only one who survived that night?" Damian whispered, his teeth stained crimson. "The Morettis didn't die out, Alex. Don Moretti had a son. A boy who was sent to Europe twenty years ago. He came back. He bought Blackwood. He’s the one who paid Marcus. He’s the one who’s been holding Sophie this whole time."

Alexander’s entire universe fractured on its axis.

His hand shook—not with fear, but with an overwhelming, suffocating surge of hope and horror.

"She’s alive?" Alexander’s voice cracked, dropping to a shattered whisper. "Sophie is alive?"

"She was," Damian grinned, a dying, malicious smirk spreading across his face. "Until tonight. The moment the Blackwood team breaches the master vault in the cellar... the kill order goes through to the safehouse in Zurich. You lost, Alex. You were always too late."

From the shadows down the hall, the sound of heavy boots echoed from the emergency stairwell.

The Blackwood strike team had arrived in the basement.
