Chapter 1 - The Blood-Stained Glass

The air in the grand banquet hall of Vance Manor was thick with the scent of aged whiskey, roasted venison, and impending violence. Beneath a three-tiered crystal chandelier that cast fractured prisms of light across polished Italian marble, thirty of the city's most influential and ruthless elites sat frozen in their seats.

“KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT!”

Marcus Cole, the estate's hulking security chief, bellowed the command with veins bulging along his corded neck. His beefy hand was clamped like an iron vise around the bruised upper arm of Elena Vance—no relation to the master of the house, merely a twenty-seven-year-old housekeeper whose knuckles were raw from hours of scrubbing floors.

CRASH!

With a savage jerk, Marcus hurled Elena forward. Her slender body collided violently with the banquet table. A pyramid of crystal champagne flutes collapsed in a deafening cascade of shattered glass. A heavy silver serving tray clattered across the floor, splashing vintage red wine across the hem of a senator’s wife’s silk gown. Elena hit the marble tiles with a sickening thud, shards slicing into the palms of her hands.

She did not cry out. She simply curled into herself, desperately pulling her frayed apron upward to conceal the fresh, dark purple swelling already blooming across her cheekbone.

Marcus took a menacing step toward her, his face contorted in vicious desperation. "I told you to clean the west corridor and keep your eyes on the damn floor!"

He reached down to haul her up by the hair, but his fingers never made contact.

“WHO GAVE YOU THE RIGHT TO TOUCH HER?!”

The voice cracked through the vaulted hall like a thunderbolt. It carried the chilling resonance of an absolute monarch whose authority had been challenged on his own altar.

Alexander Vance rose from the high-backed mahogany chair at the head of the table.

At thirty-six, Alexander was a legend wrapped in bespoke Italian wool. Tall, broad-shouldered, with silver-streaked dark hair and eyes as gray and unforgiving as winter storm clouds over Lake Michigan, he ruled the city's underworld through surgical precision rather than sloppy brutality. Men with private armies trembled when he whispered; women of high society angled desperately for a single glance.

In three measured, predatory strides, Alexander crossed the floor.

Before Marcus could withdraw his hand, Alexander's fingers clamped around the security chief's wrist with crushing force. Marcus gasped, his eyes widening in shock as bone ground against bone. Alexander twisted Marcus’s arm backward with casual savagery, ripping him away from Elena. Then, seizing Marcus by the silk lapel of his tailored security suit, Alexander slammed the two-hundred-and-twenty-pound man into a solid oak dining chair so hard the legs splintered against the floor.

The room gasped in unison. A heavy, suffocating silence swallowed the room. Nobody moved. Nobody breathed.

Alexander didn't look at Marcus. His focus drifted down toward the floor, where Elena was shivering violently, surrounded by broken glass and red wine that looked unmistakably like fresh arterial blood.

"Look at me," Alexander commanded, his voice dropping to a low, velvet rasp.

Elena flinched. She kept her gaze fixed on the marble tiles, clutching her trembling fingers against her chest. "I... I'm so sorry, Mr. Vance. I slipped. I fell down the service stairs while carrying the dessert trays. Mr. Cole was only trying to... to reprimand me for my clumsiness."

Alexander crouched beside her. His polished Oxford shoes crunched lightly on broken crystal. He didn't care about the wine seeping into his cuffs. Gently, almost unnervingly so, his gloved fingers reached out and hooked under her chin, lifting her face toward the chandelier light.

Her explanation was an insult to his intelligence.

The cut on her cheek was clean—not an abrasion from wood or stone, but a blunt-force contusion caused by a heavy signet ring. And as her oversized uniform sleeve fell back, Alexander’s eyes darkened into something feral.

Around her delicate, pale bicep were five distinct, livid bruises. Fingerprints. The thumb was pressed deeply into the soft flesh of the inner arm; the four fingers dug into the muscle. It was a restraint mark. Someone had pinned her down.

Alexander’s head turned slowly toward Marcus, whose face was rapidly draining of color.

"You fell down the stairs?" Alexander asked, his voice deceptively soft.

"Yes, sir," Elena whispered, tears welling in her large hazel eyes.

Alexander stood up. His gaze bore into Marcus Cole like twin drills. "Since when do staircases have thumbs, Marcus?"

Marcus swallowed hard, stammering, "Sir! She was wandering around the north wing! You know the protocol during high-profile gatherings! She was acting suspicious, snooping near the private quarters—I had to restrain her!"

"You touch an unarmed woman under my roof?" Alexander murmured, stepping within inches of the trembling security chief. "You assault my staff in front of my guests? You forget whose bread you eat, and whose ground you stand on."

"Sir, please, I can explain—"

"GET HIM OUT OF MY HOUSE!" Alexander's roar shook the chandelier crystals above.

Instantly, two stone-faced bodyguards—Vance’s personal shadows, dressed in charcoal tactical gear—materialized from the perimeter of the room. They seized Marcus by his arms, dragging him backward through the heavy double oak doors as he sputtered frantic, incoherent apologies.

Elena should have breathed a sigh of relief. The monster who had terrorized her for the last forty-eight hours had just been cast out.

Instead, a fresh wave of panic hit her. Her chest heaved.

In the pocket of her stained apron, her personal phone vibrated with a sharp, violent buzz.

*BZZZ.*

She froze.

Alexander was turning back toward her, his hand extended to help her to her feet. But Elena couldn't move. She slid her trembling hand into her apron pocket and pulled out the cheap, cracked smartphone.

On the illuminated lock screen, a single notification popped up from an unregistered burner number.

**[UNKNOWN]: KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT OR THE LITTLE BOY IN ST. JUDE’S DOESN’T WAKE UP TOMORROW.**

Elena’s heart slammed against her ribs like a caged bird. Her breath caught in her throat in a ragged sob. Before she could wipe the screen, a second message flashed.

It was an image.

Trembling uncontrollably, she tapped the preview.

The photograph opened. It had been taken less than ten minutes ago, judging by the lighting. It depicted a room deep within the forbidden north wing—Suite 404. A chamber secured by biometric deadbolts and heavy steel plating, a sanctuary no housekeeper, guard, or guest was ever permitted to approach under penalty of death.

Elena let out a strangled gasp, tears finally cascading down her bruised cheeks.

Alexander heard the sharp intake of breath. He was already leaning over her. "Who is messaging you?"

Elena couldn't speak. Her voice was paralyzed by absolute terror. With her hand shaking so hard the phone rattled against her fingernails, she tilted the screen upward toward the most dangerous man in the state.

Alexander glanced down at the display with mild annoyance, expecting petty blackmail or an illicit workplace affair.

Then his gaze locked onto the image.

The annoyance evaporated instantly. His jaw went slack. The color drained from his weathered, handsome face until his skin looked like bleached parchment.

In the photograph, resting casually on the edge of the antique mahogany desk inside his locked private study, sat a single, unmistakable object: a tarnished silver lighter engraved with a double-headed serpent, alongside a freshly severed lock of blonde hair tied with a blue velvet ribbon.

It was the exact ribbon his seven-year-old daughter had been wearing the night she was abducted six years ago—the night she was pronounced dead.

Alexander’s hands, which had squeezed the life out of cartel bosses without a single tremor, began to shake violently.

He looked up from the screen, his gray eyes burning with a terrifying mixture of heartbreak and apocalyptic rage.
