Chapter 6 - The Architect of Ashes

Isabella’s finger tightened on the trigger.
The hallway fell into a suffocating, razor-sharp standoff. The red emergency lights cast long, demonic shadows across Arthur Sterling’s aristocratic features. Behind her, the vast drop to the ballroom remained, but she couldn't look down to see where Victor was without giving Arthur’s mercenaries an opening to fire.
"Don't do it, kid," Gabriel wheezed through bloody teeth, his voice ragged. "Shoot this bastard... don't worry about me..."
One of the Aegis contractors drove the butt of his rifle into Gabriel’s kidneys. Gabriel groaned, slumping to his knees on the ruined carpet.
"Lower the weapon, Lyra," Arthur repeated, his tone patronizingly gentle. "You're a Vance. You were born into high society, not the gutters. You don't belong in a maid's uniform, crawling through dust and blood. Your father understood business. He understood negotiation. It was his only flaw that he became... sentimental at the end."
"Sentimental?" Isabella’s voice trembled with white-hot fury. "He discovered that you were laundering cartel money through Vance Maritime! He was going to expose you to the Department of Justice!"
Arthur smiled—a thin, reptilian slit of a smile. "And that is why Julian had to be removed. In our world, sentimentality is a terminal illness. He thought Victor would back him up. But Victor was smart. Victor took what was offered and built an empire."
"Victor didn't take your blood money," a deep, terrifying voice rumbled from behind Arthur.
Arthur’s smile vanished.
Before the Senator or his guards could turn, the shadows at the far end of the corridor detached themselves.
Victor had not taken the stairs. He had scaled the exterior service trellis, breached through a terrace window behind them, and moved in complete silence.
The suppressed muzzle of Victor’s HK416 barked twice in rapid succession.
*Thwip! Thwip!*
The two contractors holding Gabriel collapsed instantly, their heads snapping back as high-velocity rounds punched through their skulls.
In the chaotic split-second that followed, Isabella acted with ruthless instinct. She didn't drop her weapon—she fired. Her bullet clipped the shoulder of the third contractor, sending him spinning backward into the wall.
Arthur Sterling lunged forward, his cultured veneer shattering into frantic survival instincts, and raised his silver revolver toward Isabella’s chest.
"NO!" Victor roared.
Victor crossed the floor in an explosion of speed, throwing his entire body between Arthur’s gun and Isabella.
*BANG!*
The unsuppressed gunshot tore through the corridor with the force of a thunderclap.
Victor grunted, a violent shudder ripping through his torso as the heavy .38-caliber slug struck him square in the lower ribs, tearing through the edge of his body armor. The kinetic impact drove him backward into Isabella, and both of them crashed to the floor behind the marble balustrade.
"Victor!" Isabella cried out, her hands immediately flying to his side. She felt the hot, sticky rush of blood soaking through his torn shirt.
Arthur Sterling stood over them, his eyes wide with manic triumph, raising the revolver to deliver the final execution shot to Victor's head. "You should have stayed in the gutters, Moretti! You were always just a stray dog Julian picked up!"
Arthur’s finger tightened on the trigger.
*Crack!*
A single gunshot shattered the air from down the hallway.
Arthur’s eyes widened in profound shock. He looked down at his chest, where a dark, blooming crimson circle was rapidly expanding through his tailored silk tie. The silver revolver slipped from his numb fingers, clattering onto the marble floor.
He collapsed to his knees, his hands clutching his chest, before falling forward with a wet, heavy thud.
Standing twenty feet down the corridor, leaning heavily against the wall with a smoking sidearm in his trembling, broken hand, was Gabriel.
"Told you... I'm hard to kill," Gabriel muttered, before his eyes rolled back and he slid down the wall into unconsciousness.
The hallway fell into an eerie, ringing silence, punctuated only by the drumming of the rain against the skylights and the ragged, shallow gasps coming from Victor’s chest.
Isabella scrambled onto her knees, pressing both palms firmly against the wound in Victor’s side. Tears, hot and unbidden, spilled down her cheeks, washing away the soot and dust on her face.
"Stay with me," she pleaded, her voice breaking completely. "Victor, look at me! Keep your eyes open! You don't get to die after making me believe you!"
Victor let out a weak, coughing laugh, a thin line of red trickling from the corner of his mouth. He looked up at her through half-lidded eyes, reaching up with a bloody hand to gently touch her cheek.
"Seven years..." he whispered, his vision swimming. "I looked for you for seven years... I'm not... going anywhere, Lyra."
"Shut up and stop talking," she sobbed, ripping off a strip of her torn apron to pack the bleeding wound. "We have to get to the sub-basement. You said the tunnel is there."
May you like
"Not just the tunnel..." Victor murmured, his consciousness slipping at the edges. He weakly pointed toward the silver pendant still resting against her chest. "Julian's vault... the black ledger isn't a book, Lyra... it's inside the medallion. The key... is beneath the wine cellar."
