Chapter 10 - The Sovereign Dawn

Three months later.
The autumn sun cast a brilliant golden glow over the tranquil waters of Central Park. The leaves had turned to vibrant shades of amber, crimson, and copper, drifting lazily onto the manicured terraces of the Moretti penthouse.
The grand ballroom of the estate had been completely restored. The shattered marble had been replaced with imported Tuscan stone; the crystal chandeliers sparkled beneath newly painted vaulted ceilings. But the house no longer felt like a cold, impenetrable fortress. It felt alive.
Inside the private third-floor library, the French doors stood open, letting in the crisp autumn breeze.
Victor Moretti stood by the railing of the terrace, dressed in a tailored charcoal suit that fit his broad frame perfectly. Beneath his crisp white shirt, the thick surgical scars across his ribs had healed into jagged silver lines—a permanent testament to the night the Sterling empire fell.
Arthur Sterling’s syndicate was completely dismantled. Derek Sterling had been sentenced to forty years in a federal supermax facility without the possibility of parole. The corrupt politicians, judges, and corporate executives who had facilitated the murder of Julian Vance had been systematically indicted across three continents.
A soft knock sounded at the library door.
Victor turned. A genuine, warm smile touched his lips—an expression that Manhattan society had not seen on his face in a decade.
"Come in."
The heavy oak doors opened.
Isabella walked into the library.
She was no longer wearing a starched apron or a modest charcoal uniform. She wore a tailored ivory silk pantsuit that draped over her graceful frame with effortless elegance. Her chestnut hair fell in soft, radiant waves over her shoulders, and her hazel eyes sparkled with sharp, unshakeable confidence.
Around her neck, resting perfectly against the ivory silk, hung the antique silver falcon medallion.
"You're late for the board meeting, Lyra," Victor said, his voice rich and teasing.
"The Vance-Moretti Global Maritime board can wait ten minutes," Isabella replied, walking toward the terrace with the poised, commanding stride of a woman who had reclaimed her birthright. She leaned against the marble railing beside him, looking out over the sprawling city skyline. "Besides... Gabriel said you were brooding again."
"I don't brood," Victor said dryly. "I strategize."
"You brood," Isabella countered with a smirk.
Victor looked down at her, his expression softening into profound, quiet reverence. "How does it feel? Being the rightful owner of half this city?"
Isabella looked at the silver pendant resting against her chest. She reached up, her slender fingers tracing the worn contours of the ouroboros.
"For seven years, I thought this city was a graveyard," she said softly, the wind catching a strand of her hair. "I thought everyone in it was a ghost or a monster. I came here looking for blood, Victor. I wanted to burn everything down."
She turned to face him, looking up into his dark, steadfast eyes.
"You showed me that loyalty didn't die in Lake Como. You protected my father’s memory when everyone else abandoned him. You gave me back my name."
Victor reached out, his hand resting gently against the side of her face. "You gave yourself back your name, Lyra. You survived the fire. I just held the door open."
He turned toward the petrified wood desk, picking up a heavy leather-bound portfolio bearing the newly merged crest of House Moretti and House Vance: a falcon perched upon an iron pillar.
"The press conference is at noon," Victor said, holding the portfolio out to her. "The entire world thinks you died seven years ago. Today, the heiress to the Vance empire steps out into the light."
Isabella took the portfolio, her grip firm and resolute. She looked out over the vast, glittering expanse of Manhattan—the city that had tried to bury her, the city she had conquered.

"Let them look," Isabella said, a brilliant, dangerous smile gracing her lips. "It's time they learned who rules New York."
Side by side, the billionaire and the resurrected heir turned toward the grand staircase, ready to claim the dawn they had bled to build.
